Storyline

At 18, fresh from high school, Marina, Ignacio, Adam and Mimi, school mates bonded by fate, shared a dream about adult life, a dream of fame, success, perfect skin and that one endless, true love that, surely, was waiting just around the corner for each one of them. But 30's arrived, and none of the sweet promises of youth was fulfilled. Alone, failed and frustrated, all four are forced to stop and look around to try to understand where it all went wrong, and find an emergency fix for their lives, before it's too late, and happiness escapes through their fingers forever. Secondary Effects is the bitter coming of age comedy that follows their steps in the search for lost dreams, lost hair and good sex, at least, if true love turns out to be a mirage. Alejandra Gollás, like her character Mimí, is a former child star. She starred in "Quinceañera", the soap opera that is briefly shown in the movie, and her mother in that role was Julieta Egurrola, that plays her mother in Efectos Secundarios too. Also, she was the title character in the musical Annie; hence, the singing of "Tomorrow" in the car scene with mom. See more »

great Mexican film
2 February 2008 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

I had been wanting to see this movie for the longest time, but it was not available where I live. So, I had to order this online, and I could hardly wait to see it when I got it. Believe me, this movie is worth every penny I paid for it.

This movie is about four people that went to the same school and are about to turn 30 years old. So, they are all going through nostalgic moments at this point. They're asking themselves whether they have fulfilled their life goals or not.

All the acting was great, the characters really grow on you as the story develops. There are moments where you laugh hysterically, and there are those moments that make you feel sad for them.

This movie is a comedy-drama that reminded me a lot of American Beauty. The score is beautiful, and the movie came with the sound-track, so this movie will be one of my favorites in my collection. Mexico has come up with some awesome movies lately. I expect great things for Issa López (the director),as well as all the actors: Marina DE Tavira, Alejandra Gollas, Arturo Barba and Pedro Izquierdo.

I would highly recommend this movie to anyone!
