Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig is bringing a new anime series called Neo Yokio to Netflix this month. Here's the trailer...
What a time to be alive.
Netflix just dropped a trailer for an anime original series from Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig starring Jaden Smith, Steve Buscemi, Jude Law, Susan Sarandon, Desus and Mero, Jason Schwartzman and Tavi Gevinson, amongst others.
From the looks of the trailer, Neo Yokio is part-satire, part homage (a la Hot Fuzz), a series that aims to send-up many of anime's most ubiquitous tropes, while also paying tribute to them.
Neo Yokio, a play off of the 'New Tokyo' setting in anime classic Akira, is "a postmodern collage of homages to classic anime, English literature and modern New York fashion and culture." It follows the adventures of Jaden Smith's Kaz Kaan, a broken-hearted, pink-haired demon slayer who cares more about shopping,...

After rocking the mic in Netflix’s “The Get Down,” Jaden Smith is returning to the streaming giant — in pink-haired, animated form.
Today, Netflix announced “Neo Yokio,” a new original series created by Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig and featuring a voice cast starring Smith, Susan Sarandon, Jude Law, Tavi Gevinson, Jason Schwartzman, and Desus & Mero. Additional members of the voice cast include: Richard Ayoade, Ike Barinholtz, Steve Buscemi, Alexa Chung, Stephen Fry, Katy Mixon, Annet Mahendru, Kiernan Shipka, Willow Smith, and Amandla Stenberg.
According to a release from Netfilx, “the series is a postmodern collage of homages to classic anime, English literature and modern New York fashion and culture.” Set in the ultra-modern city of Neo Yokio, the show focuses on young Kaz (Smith) as he deals with both teenage heartbreak, the legacy of his demon slayer family, and the danger that might be threatening Neo Yokio.

Level E is an anime series that you want to love. The story setup is reminiscent of Men in Black. Aliens have been living on the planet for centuries, but Earth’s population doesn’t realize that these aliens are living amongst them. There may not be any secret organization governing alien activities, but there are several aliens who are dressed up in humanoid skin. While the backstory and the grim Twilight Zone narration might suggest a more serious X-Factor-esque series, comedy begins to take hold of the story once Baka of the planet Dogra shows up.
The thirteen-episode anime is based on Yoshihiro Togashi’s manga series of the same name. Togashi was the creative mind behind Hunter X Hunter, but the lead character in this whimsical series stands in sharp contrast to Hunter X Hunter’s loveable Gon.

When it comes to exciting-adrenaline infused anime, the Hunter X Hunter series ranks in the top 50 Anime series of all time. That may sound like a small number to an outsider, but in Japan Anime series are as abundant as TV series in the United States. The style of art isn’t as glossy as modern Anime shows. However, after a few episodes you’ll realize that the story is much like the lead character Gon, and will quickly win your admiration and respect. Hunter X Hunter Vol. 3 concluded with Gon and Killua’s return to Whale Island. When Killua left his family to follow Gon, everyone wondered if Killua could ever really put aside the Zoldyck family upbringing, a life of assassination. At the end of Volume 3, Killua learned a kinder-gentler approach to life through Aunt Mito’s love and home cooking. Volume 4 begins with Killua and Gon confronting...

The Hunter test is officially over. Well sort of. “Hunter X Hunter” Volume 3 continues to chronicle the lives of Gon, Leorio, Kurapika and Killua. Now that Gon has his hunter licenece, he is hell bent on finding out why Killua really forfeited the Hunter test. Unlike most Anime collections riddled with filler episodes, “Hunter X Hunter” maintains a strong serialized story arc that you can’t help but follow. This DVD collection features two story arcs. The first quest involves Gon, Leorio and Kurapika’s journey to Killua’s home. They try to visit their friend, Killua, at the Zaoldyecks mansion. Unfortunately, the group soon discovers that no outsider is allowed to visit any member of Zaoldyecks. Gon tries to appeal to the Zaoldyecks’ servants, claiming to be Killua’s friend, but they all claim Master Killua has no friends. After passing through a series of trials and tests, which...

The colors may seem and the animation archaic, when compared with 2009 anime, but Hunter X Hunter is one series that is anything but dull or archaic. When I watched the first few episodes of Hunter X Hunter Volume 1, I thought this was another kiddy anime that would make me fall asleep with a subpar plot. Once I reached the middle of Volume 1 Disc 2, Hunter X Hunter had quickly smacked me in the face and told me my first impression was dead wrong. Several scenes are gruesome and will remind you that a card-carrying psychopath can literally be just that. The first two volumes even have less filler episodes than more recent Anime like Naruto. Hunter X Hunter stars Gon, a boy from a small village who grew up without knowing his father. Both people and animals can’t help but fall in love with his jubilant-vivacious spirit. ...
