To this day, the use of a genre feature that mixes scares with romantic undertones is a style that has been quite prominent in Indian cinema, much more than in most other countries, as it's a proven box-office hit in most cases. Produced by the mother/daughter team of Shobha and Etka Kapoor, who had been better known for producing Indian soap operas on TV as well as the earlier successful Bollywood romantic scarefest in “Bhoot,” this did not turn into a success upon release but has since grown into a cult classic over years with it now appearing on physical media courtesy of Echelon Studios.

Ajay Devgn, On An Average, Delivered 7 – 8 Films In A Year(Photo Credit –Facebook)
Ajay Devgn has kickstarted this year with great numbers in his supernatural horror flick Shaitaan. The film, which opened at 15.21 crore, has maintained a good hold over the week as well. This will be a moral booster for his upcoming films. The actor is ready with as many as four more releases at the box office.
However, there was once a time when the actor used to frequently drop 7 – 8 films a year. While he delivered 8 films in a year twice, he also delivered 7 films a year twice. His third best was obviously delivering 6 films a year, still better than actors in today’s era.
However, how these films worked at the box office actually brings forth the reality. Out of the 8 films he delivered twice, none was a hit. In fact, even when he delivered 7 films a year twice,...

Way Before Shaitaan, Ajay Devgn Already Proved His Mettle With His 1st Horror Film At The Box Office (Photo Credit – YouTube)
Ajay Devgn’s Shaitaan has earned 55.13 crore at the box office with its first-weekend collection, and while the film has performed beyond expectations on the first three days of its release, it is expected to hold the fort through the weekend as well.
In fact, 100 crore does not seem to be an impossible challenge for the film, which is expected to have a decent and stable collection over the coming weekdays.
Helmed by Vikas Bahl, Shaitaan stars Ajay Devgn as a helpless father, Jyothika as a struggling mother, and R Madhavan as the devil. It needs a very easy target to surpass the first horror hit by the Tanhaji actor.

Films generally succumb to the deadly Monday test after releasing on Friday and performing well over the 1st weekend. However, the 1st Monday, which is a working day, brings the numbers drastically down, but Shaitaan might still hold its fort strongly. At least the advance booking trends suggest so.
The horror flick helmed by Vikas Bahl experienced its first massive drop on the fourth day, Monday, in the advance booking. The numbers for the advance tickets dropped by almost 70% on the fourth day.
While Shaitaan, on the third day, collected over 5 crore from advance booking for 2,28,148 sold tickets, it dropped the ticket sale by almost 70% on Monday with only 68,646 tickets sold, accounting for a gross collection of around 1.15 crore.

Bhoot Part One The Haunted Ship
Starring Vicky Kaushal, Ashutosh Rana, Meher Vij
Directed by Bhanu Pratap Singh
Karan Johar is into horror now. A lot of people thought Kalank was his first horror film. But his initiation into the arena of spook began with Ghost Stories last month. Now in his first full-fledged fear-fest, Karan Johar is fully into the think of things on a haunted ship which, like Karan’s Kalank, docks into Mumbai un-navigated.
Instead of drowning the ship in the ocean (maybe tie the monster contraption to a few boulders) the film’s naval hero Prithvi played by the up and coming Vicky Kaushal, drowns his dread of the dead in drinks. No wonder he starts seeing evil spirits at home and on the ship. If you spend too much time with memories you become a ghost.

Vicky Kaushal has been riding high on the success of Uri: The Surgical Strike that released last year. From starring in action-thrillers to romantic and espionage flicks, the actor has now tried the horror genre with his next, Bhoot – Part One: The Haunted Ship.
It was the concept that attracted the actor. Probably, he also wanted to overcome his fear as he confesses to being terrified of watching horror films. “When I read the script, what fascinated me was its geography. It was almost like Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. I liked the thought that there is a vacant hotel, there are so many rooms, and there is just one person, so anything can happen anywhere. There is a lot to play with. This is the same geography where there is a dilapidated big container ship. There are 10 floors, 300 rooms, engine room, pump room, staircases. Well, 2019 is now in the past and the record books have it safely locked away, so its best time to look forward to what will be another action, drama and comedy packed year of Bollywood cinemas. At 89 years old, Bollywood is still right on the pulse of modern society, giving audiences things to talk about and think about all the way till Nye 2021. Some things will carry on from last year: there’s plenty of female-centric films and plenty to be had especially for action and comedy buffs. Most importantly though, this need to be on the cusp, on the tongues and keeping audiences on the edge of their seats, will mean the music will find new heights and extremes to reach as it either becomes the cornerstone of the film or disappears into the background, providing a rhythmic base for the story and characters to play upon. So, below...

Typewriter (Netflix India)
Starring Purab Kohli, Palomi Ghosh, Sameer Kochchar,Aarna Sharma
Written & Directed by Sujoy Ghosh
A typewriter is an obsolete instrument. Much like the typical miniseries on television which has now been taken over by the smart sexy web series with production values that could put an average Subhash Ghai film to shame.
And yet the sheer vintage value of the ‘typewriter’ is preserved in writer-director Sujoy Ghosh’s engaging genre-conforming yet unorthodox supernatural webseries . What is it about? You may well ask. It’s about a discarded typewriter which does sinister things on its own, like pounding out corny messages like ‘Bhoot is not Jhooth’.
Jhoot or not, Sujoy’s re-Bhoot series stretching slinkily into five episodes has a lot of fun with spirits. The writing is sprightly yet dark, grim yet giggly, smart and briskly paced. This is not to suggest that Ghosh is here trying to do a Stree…...

You might have seen actresses playing nuns in films but it's very rare that an actress becomes a nun in real life. That's exactly what Barkha Madan (Bhoot, Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi) has done. In this interview, she talks about her final film as an actress - Surkhaab (which releases today) and her pursuit of happiness.
Is it true that Surkhaab was ready since a long time and took a long time to release?

His recent releases have bombed at the box-office due to a weak script and thus have also received tremendous flak from the film critics and the audiences. Directed by Ram Gopal Verma and written by Ravi Shankar, Bhoot Returns is sequel to the 2003 thriller Bhoot. Bhoot had also been an Rgv directorial and starred Urmila Matondkar in an outstanding performance. Bhoot Returns, however does not live up to the original and is unfortunately and evidently, a failed attempt. Horror films are meant to be spooky and not whatever Bhoot Returns transpired into being.

Ram Gopal Varma has given the Bollywood industry some big films over the years. He has directed, written and produced films across multiple genres – psychological thrillers, underworld warfare, fiction, politics-nexus and experimental films in various languages. His horror films have also been quite a revelation as he has introduced some path-breaking horror films in Indian Cinema.
Right from the year 1992, when Raat was released, which is still considered one of the best horror films made in Bollywood; Rgv has never let his audiences down with this genre.
In 2003 again, Ajay Devgn and Urmila Matondkar’s Bhoot was a hit. Both of them won awards for their outstanding performances. There is no denial in the fact that Ram Gopal Varma has given a list of horror films and recreated the genre with his creativity and visualization.
His other note worthy films in this genre includes Vaastu Shastra (2004), Phoonk (2008) and Darna Mana Hai (2003) among many more.
