Acclaimed actor Edward Asner has signed onto Cmt's comedy pilot "Regular Joe."
In addition, the network cast Liza Snyder ("Yes Dear") in a lead role on the show.
The two help fill out the cast of the project, which is executive produced by David Litt, Nina Wass & Eugene Stein.
Asner ("Up") will play the father of Joe (Tom Arnold), a gruff and outspoken man who's recently began dating after separating from his longtime wife.
If greenlit, the casting will represent a return for Asner to the medium that made him a household name in the 1970s. Asner was the star of two legendary TV hits, "Mary Tyler Moore" and its spinoff "Lou Grant."
Snyder ("Pay it Forward") will play Marine, Joe's smart and funny wife. She's repped by Apa and Susan Smith Company; Asner is repped by Greene & Associates and Perry Zimel.

NBC's search for America's Most Talented Kid got off to a good start Friday but it was an uphill battle for the premiere of ABC's 9:30 p.m. sitcom, Regular Joe. Kid took the 8 p.m. slot away from ABC's incumbent leader, America's Funniest Home Videos, with an average of 11.9 million viewers and a 3.6 rating/11 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to Nielsen Media Research. The amateur competition series gained steam throughout the hour, climbing from 11.1 million viewers at the outset to an average of 12.7 million in the second half-hour. It also gave the peacock its best rating with regular series programming in the time period in a year. Home Videos was a close second with an average of 10.3 million and 3.2/10 in the 18-49 demo.

Stephanie Leifer has been promoted to senior vp comedy programming at ABC. The senior vp stripes for Leifer come in recognition of the success the network has had with its new sitcoms this season, 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter, Life With Bonnie and Less Than Perfect. ABC also has two midseason comedies on tap, Regular Joe and Lost at Home. Leifer has overseen ABC's comedy development since January, when former department head Julie Glucksman resigned as part of a shake-up that included the departure of ABC entertainment co-chairman Stu Bloomberg and the ascension of Susan Lyne to entertainment president.
