Last week the Austin Film Society hosted a special screening of cult favorite El Mariachi as a benefit for the Texas Filmmakers' Production Fund (Tfpf), with special guests including a live performance by filmmaker Robert Rodriguez's band Chingon. Antoinette Alfonso Zel, CEO of Rodriguez's general entertainment cable channel El Rey Network -- seen above on the red carpet with Rodriguez -- was in attendance, as well as El Mariachi stars Carlos Gallardo (Desperado, Bandido) and Peter Marquardt.
The event took place the day after the 2012 Tfpf recipients were announced, with over $89,000 in cash grants bestowed to 16 projects from emerging Texas filmmakers. I spoke to Afs Executive Director Rebecca Campbell about the significance of the screening as a Tfpf fundraiser, and she stated: "Here we are giving out grants to help the next generation of emerging talented Texans, and maybe some of them will go on to have a successful...

Six ambitious forensic undergrads are marooned on a remote island during a university field project. Unbeknownst to the group, the site was formerly used as an illegal biological testing ground for life-term criminals left for dead. But they aren't. They're undead.
The living cast includes Katharine Isabelle (Ginger Snaps) in the role of Megan, Michael Shanks (Stargate, Burn Notice, Smallville) in the role of Professor Tomkins, Brendan Fletcher (The Pacific, Freddy vs Jason) cast as Josh...

Nothing really seems to scare Kim Coates. Over his career, the Canadian actor (pictured above in Bandido) has encountered curses, vampires, werewolves, poltergeists, and now zombies in Resident Evil: Afterlife. Recently, on the Toronto set, an enthusiastic Coates spoke with me about his character Bennett, joining the Resident Evil franchise, and embracing the revolutionary 3-D technology. Hit the jump for our conversation. What can you tell us about your character? He's a survivor. He's the local dickhead for sure, but everyone needs a dickhead. When I met with Paul [W.S.
