Exclusive: Black Box Management has signed Nick August-Perna, the filmmaker behind the buzzy true crime doc Tell Them You Love Me, which topped Netflix’s film charts in its February debut.
Hitting #1 on Netflix’s Top 10 Movies, the film tells the true story of Anna Stubblefield, an esteemed professor involved in a controversial affair with Derrick Johnson, a non-verbal man with cerebral palsy. Their relationship eventually led to a criminal trial challenging perceptions of disability and nature of consent.
Black Box and August-Perna are teaming to produce a scripted remake of the film, the hope being to replica the success of much-discussed true-crime projects like I, Tonya, The Act, and The Girl from Plainville.
In a statement to Deadline, Black Box’s founding partners Mike Dill and Lowell Shapiro shared, “When we first saw Nick’s incredible film Tell Them You Love Me, we knew that he was someone we had to represent.

In the past few years, there have been multiple documentaries and docuseries revisiting high-profile cases long after the fact: Lorena Bobbitt (“Lorena”), the Menendez Brothers (“Menendez & Menudo: Boys Betrayed”), JonBenét Ramsey (“JonBenét Ramsey: What Really Happened?”), Casey Anthony (“Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies”), Jared Vogel (“Jared from Subway: Catching a Monster”), boy band creator Lou Perlman (“Dirty Pop”), Brian Peck (“Quiet on the Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV”), Sherri Papini (“The Perfect Wife”), and Gypsy Rose Blanchard (“The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard”), just to name a few. And the trend isn’t limited to docs — Todd Haynes’s 2023 feature film “May December” offered a fascinating fictional version of the Mary Kay Letourneau story after 20-plus years.
The most recent entry in the cycle is the Laci Peterson story, which met its 20th anniversary of the trial this month with two docuseries, “American Murder: Laci Peterson...

The cherished screen team of William Powell and Myrna Loy met “cute” on their first film together, the gritty 1934 “Manhattan Melodrama.” According to TCM.com, first scene in the film required her to run out a building, maneuver through a crowd of people and jump into a car. The film’s director W.S. “Woody” Van Dyke, who was nicknamed “One Take Woody” because of his efficiency, didn’t bother to introduce the actress to Powell. So, when Van Dyke called “action “Loy recalled jumping into the car and landing “smack on William Powell’s lap. He looked up nonchalantly: Miss Loy, I presume?” I said, Mr. Powell? That’s how I met the man who would be my partner in 14 films.”
It was their next film, the smart screwball comedy/mystery “The Thin Man,” which opened May 25, 1934, transformed the couple into top stars at MGM. Directed by Van Dyke...

Myrna Loy Myrna Loy Biography: Intro You've written books on Mae West and Rudolph Valentino. Why Myrna Loy? Shortest answer: I saw her on Libeled Lady on TCM one night, and said to myself, "She is so delightful. Has there been a book on her?" Longer answer: My previous book was on Valentino, who "discovered" Myrna when she was a Prologue dancer at Grauman's Egyptian Theatre and gave her the first screen test she ever had. I liked the link. The subtitle of your Myrna Loy book is "The Only Good Girl in Hollywood." How was Loy a "Good Girl"? Or was she? The title comes from something said about Myrna by John Ford when she was starting out as a silent-film actress and kept getting assigned roles as an exotic vixen. Ford said, "Wouldn't you know? The one they have playing tramps is the only good girl in Hollywood.

Web Series: Life Of The Other Half
For fans of...: One Life To Live; The Young And The Restless
What it is: A bunch of privileged Aussie singles make their lives more difficult than they need to be.
What's good: This series takes us back to the days when daytime soaps were about the sort of glamorously banal drama only spoiled young pretties endure. Embraces classic soap archetypes (The Socialite, The Casanova, The Perfect Wife) while freshening with a spritz of faux-doc-style irony.
What's great: Who will betray whom? Who will seduce whom? Solid eight-party set-up could eventually yield all sorts of trysts and hijinks.
What could be better: Halfway through the first season and it seems that we're just getting going. After a rather aimless first episode, momentum has been building steadily & we just had our first big love...pentagon, we want to say? Here's hoping the rest...
