The Bradford International Film Festival is typically an underground-friendly fest. This year appears to be no exception with two very special experimental film retrospectives, as well as a few modern underground-type flicks.
The 19th annual Biff will roll on April 11-21 at several locations around Bradford and Leeds in England, including the National Media Museum, Hebden Bridge Picture House, Hyde Park Picture House and other venues.
Biff is hosting a tribute to Stan Brakhage this year by screening the prolific filmmaker’s magnum opus, Dog Star Man, as well as a selection of his short films, from 1963′s legendary Mothlight to 1994′s Black Ice. There’s also going to be an epic-sized tribute/retrospective of experimental films from Austria, a country with a proud avant-garde filmmaking tradition that’s typically overlooked.

This December, Mubi will be presenting a small Tony Scott retrospective in New York at 92YTribeca. See below for the films, dates and notes. All movies will be shown on film.

American cinema lost one of its great, unsung, emigre directors when Tony Scott mysteriously took his life earlier this August. A pioneer in the commercial advertisement aesthetic of the 80s, Scott would take that aesthetic and build upon it, transferring it to a post-9/11 world with hyperfast cutting and camerawork that would eventually come to define the decade and the director. Gina Telaroli and I, working with 92YTribeca's Cristina Cacioppo, have assembled a program featuring one key film from each of Scott's three American periods. To draw out some of the best and overlooked qualities of his small but aesthetically and thematically coherent oeuvre, we're also accompanying each film with a short from the avant-garde, and completed the package...

The premiere of a new Lady Gaga music video is always a cause celebre for entertainment lovers of any sort, but earlier today Gaga gave us a truly theatrical - and totally, wildly, adorably surreal - early Christmas treat of epic proportions in the form of the short film Marry The Night. Part Tommy, part David Lynch-ian fever dream, part throwback music video, with the rest unmistakably, unquestionably and undoubtedly all Gaga. Directed by Gaga herself, the Marry The Night music video puts into question the term itself - much like Kanye Wests exquisite mini-movie musical treatment of eight of his songs from his Grammy-nominated opus My Beatiful Dark Twisted Fantasy in the form of the Runaway short filmmusic video from late last year - and, now, once again, Gaga has redefined not only the genre she is working in, but the entire music and theatre game itself. Daring,...

The HDNet network has integrated Sunday Night Music, which will feature high definition live concerts every Sunday. The HDNet Concert Series will begin May 22, 2011 with Crosby and Nash 7:30pm Est. This is the first in a series of live concerts for the HDNet channel. Crosby and Nash have been together since 1968 with ‘Csn’ and ‘Csn&Y’. Although other members from their former bands have come and gone, the duo seem to never part from each other. After many years of music Crosby and Nash have evolved into their own independent label. Their label ‘Blue Castle Records’ has reissued digital and vinyl versions of archival hit album ‘Another Stoney...

One has to hand it to the Tony nominators: They didn't follow conventional wisdom nor did they particularly pay heed to commercial considerations.
Indeed, some of the biggest noms went to shows that are either long gone ("Ragtime," "Finian's Rainbow," "In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play," "Time Stands Still") or lagging at the boxoffice ("Fela!" "Memphis," "Next Fall," "Million Dollar Quartet").
The biggest surprises Tuesday were the omissions.
"The Addams Family," the most successful new musical of the season, was thoroughly dissed, failing to get noms for best musical, for its stars Nathan Lane or Bebe Neuwirth, or even for its production design. And though it did get one for original score, that's not exactly a coup in a season in which only one other musical, "Memphis," even had one. The category had to be embarrassingly filled out with the forgettable music from "Enron" and Branford Marsalis' incidental music for "Fences.

Angela Lansbury will get the chance to make Tony Award history as she goes for her record sixth trophy next month.
On Tuesday, the actress earned a featured actress in a musical nomination — her seventh overall — for her role as Madame Armfeldt in the revival of Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music. The former Murder, She Wrote star, who's been 0-for-18 at the Emmys, tied Julie Harris last year as the winningest Tony performer when she picked up featured actress in a play for Blithe Spirit.

On The Cinephilic Pleasures Of...Murder, She Wrote: Those among you who read my blog cloesly, and with any regularity, have by now discovered that My Lovely Wife and I are completely, well, gaga over Angela Lansbury. I think she's totes hot in Gaslight, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and especially The Harvey Girls. And My Lovely Wife loves...Murder, She Wrote. That's right, the long-running (1984 to 1996!) TV series created by Richard Levinson and William Link, who were also the fathers of television crime fighters Columbo and Mannix, TV crime drama's fastest parallel-parker. And I'll tell you what: I love Murder, She Wrote, too, and if you have a problem with that you can say it to my face and I won't much care.
Last week we had tickets to go see Lansbury, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, in Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music, in a Broadway production directed by Trevor Nunn.
