Question: Please tell me the glimpse we got of Cristina in the Grey’s Anatomy premiere foreshadowed an actual appearance by Sandra Oh this season. — Janet
Ausiello: I and, for that matter, Grey’s Ep Krista Vernoff would love to tell you that that was happening. “I would give anything for a visit from Sandra Oh,” she says, adding with a laugh, “Do you know her? Can you call her and talk her into it?” In all seriousness,...

Not so fast Savant — with the help of correspondent input, DVD Savant presents more information on David Swift’s adaptation of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying — correcting and modifying some assumptions in my first review. Don’t worry — it’s good reading.
A Savant article
This is an odd circumstance. I routinely update, modify, correct and de-stupidify DVD Savant reviews, but this time I’m taking a more radical step. In my March 25 coverage of Twilight Time’s Blu-ray of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, I made a big point of the fact that David Swift’s film adaptation had not made many changes. Several songs were dropped, but that would seem the right thing to do considering that the movie wasn’t planned as a Road Show — it’s only 121 minutes in duration and has no break for an intermission. The much missed...

Whether you believe in true love or not, there's one thing we can all agree on: these wedding dresses are ah-may-zing.
Celebs pulled out all the stops this year to make sure that they not only had the perfect day but also the perfect gown, calling in big names like Victoria Beckham, Jenny Packham, and Vera Wang to make them stunning numbers for their nuptials.
Though all of the looks were gorgeous in their own right, there was two clear themes to 2016's gowns: boho chic and luxe glam. In fact, quite a few ladies even combined the two, which meant miles of jaw-dropping lace and plenty of intricate beading and florals that beg for a closer look.

Ed's villainy comes to light as Oswald makes a meal of his step-family...
This review contains spoilers.
2.17 Into The Woods
On this week's Gotham, it was the best of times (for the first half of this episode), it was the worst of times (for the second half of this episode). I am being hyperbolic. All in all, this was a pretty great episode. Unfortunately, the momentum built up in the first half of the episode — and in the larger Ed becomes Riddler plot — was squandered in a too-fast, too-easy wrap-up. Oh well. We'll always have that scene of Ed electrocuting Jim in his apartment...
First, let's talk about what was great in this episode. Like many of the best episodes of Gotham (this one included), Into The Woods did a good job of bringing formerly disparate elements of the plot together by focusing on one urgent element.

Following Tuesday's much anticipated release of Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, author Helen Fielding took some time to chat live with People.com readers and reflect on the beloved fictional character she made into a household name. "I love talking about Bridget and it is very touching that people still care about her after so much time," Fielding, 55, told readers, adding that she never gets tired of talking about her. Bridget, played by Renée Zellweger in the two film adaptations of the book, is a widowed mom in the third and most recent installment of the series -...

The Little Mermaid returns to your home theater again, this time in Blu-ray format and it’s a must-have for families, Disneyphiles, animation-lovers, music-lovers, and romantics with a soft spot for fairy tales and happy endings. It’s understandable that the good folks at Disney wanted to that ending to be a happy one. After all, in the Hans Christian Anderson source tale, the mermaid not only trades her voice for legs by having her tongue cut out… ouch!, but also loses the prince to another woman, so throws herself into the sea and dies (but at least she goes to heaven!).
With The Little Mermaid, released in the fall of 1989, a new wave of Disney films hit America both on the big screen nearly each year and in households on VHS (this was before DVD’s). This new generation of Disney movies was far from the old-fashioned Disney films of yesteryear – Snow White,...

‘The Deanna Durbin Unit’ (photo: Robert Cummings, Deanna Durbin, and Charles Laughton in It Started with Eve) [See previous post: "Deanna Durbin Movies Save Universal."] Deanna Durbin and Henry Koster, who has been credited with helping to mold Durbin’s screen persona, collaborated on five movies. Besides Three Smart Girls, there was the inevitable sequel, Three Smart Girls Grow Up (1939), in addition to One Hundred Men and a Girl, after which Durbin’s salary was reportedly doubled to $3,000 per week, plus a $10,000 bonus per film; the Cinderella-like First Love (1939), in which, following worldwide publicity, Durbin gets kissed on screen for the first time (Robert Stack was the kisser); Spring Parade (1940), with a Viennese setting and Robert Cummings as her leading man; and It Started with Eve (1941), a light, well-received romantic comedy co-starring Cummings and Charles Laughton. (Universal would also release the 1964 remake, I’d Rather Be Rich, starring Sandra Dee in the Robert Cummings role, Robert Goulet in the Deanna Durbin part,...

We've got our eye on another fairytale remake, with today's news that Cate Blanchett may be lending her signature ice-cold gaze to the part of Cinderella's evil stepmother in Disney's upcoming untitled project. According to The Wrap, the "Hobbit" star is the first in talks to join Mark Romanek's live-action rendition on the classic tale.
Before you roll your eyes at the thought of yet another take on happily ever after, consider the plot, which follows a doomed politically arranged marriage plot involving a prince and, of course, Cinderella. With Blanchett and Romanek on board, we're thinking this one won't involve pumpkin carriages and talking mice.
With that said, this won't be the first twist added to the preexisting cookie-cutter storyline—from the Muppets to gender role reversals, we break down some of the most unexpected and wacky twists we've seen in Cinderella's movie past.

Detour into a Dissolve
A frame from between posts 120 and 121.
By the 1830s, he [Henry Langdon Childe] had developed and perfected the [magic lantern] technique of ‘dissolving views,’ in which one picture faded out as the next one faded in. The images were aligned on the screen and the light remained a constant intensity, creating a smooth, gradual transition. This permitted a wide variety of effects that had not previously been possible. (From The Emergence of Cinema, by Charles Musser, University of California Press, 1990.)
A dissolve is the superimposition of a fade-out onto a fade-in, achieved by reversing and them re-filming using film that has already been used once. [George] Méliès first used this technique, which originated in magic lantern displays, in the late 1899 Cendrillon (Cinderella), and then frequently thereafter to link scenes in multiple-shot films. From the beginning, the dissolve was usually not used for trick effect, but rather to create a smooth transition from...

Like Nine to Five, this week's candidate for Best Movie Ever is righteously ridiculous. It's sophisticated and bawdy as hell. In fact, it's a whole bunch of awesome dichotomies: wacky but meaningful, musical but conversational, broad but subversive, hilarious but concerned with very real taboos. And more than anything, it's fun, which is more than enough to qualify it for the finest film ever. It is the saucy superiority of Victor/Victoria, a movie that's so shockingly whimsical and warm, I'm willing to bet -- if you've seen it before -- you're lighting up just remembering your favorite moment or character. I know I am. And I'll save her for last.
Let's jump back to Paris in the '30s, contemplate the ferocious morality of Julie Andrews and her character's commitment to drag, and relive the gayest and feyest and flyest of '80s comedies. C'est magnifique!

In honor of The Help, which comes out this week, we wanted to revisit our favorite maids in pop culture. We're sure we left out some good ones. Who do you think is missing from the list?
10. Mrs. Doubtfire
Perhaps one of Robin Williams' best parts — the dad who will do anything to be close to kids, including dressing in drag and become his ex-wife's housekeeper.
9. Hazel
Hazel is the godmother of all TV-maids, paving the way for every sage, take-charge housekeeper to follow in her sitcom footsteps.
8. Rosario
The Members-Only-wearing, Subway-sandwich-eating maid to Karen Walker on Will & Grace was one of our favorite characters on the show. The feisty housekeeper took no grief from her boss, perhaps because back in El Salvador she was three credits shy of a Master's Degree in clinical psychology.
