Tony Awards 2013: Tom Hanks, Nora Ephron, Cicely Tyson, Tom Sturridge among nominees (photo: Tom Hanks in Lucky Guy) The Tony Awards 2013 nominations were announced earlier today. Missing in action is a whole array of film celebrities, though a few managed to be included in this year’s shortlist. (See also: “Tony Awards 2013: Scarlett Johansson, Sigourney Weaver, Jessica Chastain ‘Snubbed.’“) Two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks (Philadelphia, Forrest Gump) is in the running for Best Actor in a Play for Lucky Guy, which is also up for the Best Play Tony Award. Written by Nora Ephron, who directed Hanks and Meg Ryan in two of their biggest box-office hits, Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail, Lucky Guy traces the rise, fall, and rebirth of New York tabloid columnist Mike McAlary. Nor is it entering the adaptation of Charles Dickens' unfinished novel "Mystery of Edwin Drood" (with Matthew Rhys) that was produced by the same team that won an Emmy for adapting his "Little Dorrit" for television. Less surprising is the decision to drop the disappointing reboot of "Upstairs, Downstairs" (with Keeley Hawes and Ed Stoppard) from the lineup of contenders. This lavish update fell far short of the mark of the original, which won three Emmys for ...

Charles Dickens obviously intended the Mystery of Edwin Drood to be a mystery (hence the name) but it is even more mysterious than he originally intended because he died before the book had been completed. One of the elements that was left unsolved in the unfinished manuscript was the murder of the title character although the producers of this version seemingly unraveled that mystery in the opening minutes as his malevolent uncle Jasper began to plot the deadly deed.
Tamzin Merchant (The Tudors) was convincing as Drood’s reluctant fiancee and Matthew Rhys (Brothers and Sisters) was very impressive as the Drood’s brooding nemesis. PBS viewers will also recognize Sacha Dhawan (Neville Landless) who was recently in the NBC “comedy” Outsourced. The show had a Lost...
