When a Santa Claus falls off the balcony of his apartment, Lisbon and Patrick are assigned to investigate the murder and they have to find whether Santa committed suicide or was pushed. His identity is Bernard Ripple and he was drunken, but they learn that he was in rehab for ten years, and Patrick investigates his mates in the AA and a Rehabilitation Clinic. Meanwhile, Internal Affairs Detective J. J. LaRoche investigates the death of Todd Johnson inside CBI and Patrick Jane is his prime suspect.
"Jolly Red Elf" is an episode of "The Mentalist" with a promising storyline, the death of Todd Johnson. The new character J. J. LaRoche is unpleasant and really looks like a police detective with his behavior. The lead storyline is well resolved. My vote is eight.
