When Sydnee Washington was 11 years old, she accidentally burned down the house. The Brooklyn-born comedian was living with elderly relatives in Oakland, California, at the time, behaving, in her words, like a “little Black Dennis the Menace.”
“If playing with fire was not my first time having a bit, I don’t know what was,” Washington, 37, tells THR. “You burn your house down and you’re either going to be a comedian or you’re going to jail.” Fortunately, Washington’s path led to the former, and now she is an Emmy nominee for her leading role on Bridesman, the first scripted series from Grindr.

Half of the record-breaking 14 acting Emmy nominations “Succession” received this year went to guest performers, three of whom are women. The only other series that have ever amassed as many simultaneous bids in the Best Drama Guest Actress category are “Six Feet Under” (2002), “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (2009), and “The Handmaid’s Tale” (2018). Included among the “Succession” trio is Sanaa Lathan, whose third-season performance is the first for which she has earned TV academy recognition.

Apparently the next best thing to being Emmy nominated is being Emmy snubbed. At least, that seemed to be the case on Tuesday morning, when publicists quickly switched gears after their clients failed to get an Emmy nomination — and instead started pitching them to be included in the roundup of this year’s biggest “snubs.”
It’s a further sign of just how important the awards industrial complex has become in Hollywood. If you aren’t nominated, the next best thing is to have fans and the press agonizing about the fact that you should have been nominated. And sometimes it finally works: Look at how years of “Better Call Saul” star Rhea Seehorn being on the “snub” list got to the point that many of us in the media — myself included — started threatening to burn this whole town down if Seehorn didn’t get a nod. She finally did this year,...

There was an argument to be made that the now-mononymous comedy star Ziwe was among the best television performers of 2020 — even though her existing outside television was what had made her a star. Ziwe’s Instagram Live series, in which she delivered startlingly direct interviews with internet stars and comedian peers about race, made fascinating use of the platform’s split-screen technology. On the screen’s bottom half, the guest squirmed and dissembled; Ziwe, eyes glinting in triumph as she went in for the kill, was on top. The magic of her performance lay in the degree to which Ziwe shifted her energy — she could go, in a moment, from benevolently trying to work out issues together with her guest to exposing weaknesses in their thinking, and back again.
Her act had a kinetic, unrehearsed energy that both seemed perfectly unified with its format and seemed to demand a promotion.

Need a little content with your cruising? Grindr is getting into the scripted entertainment game with “Bridesman,” a new 10-minute episodic series starring beloved internet comedian Jimmy Fowlie. Created by John Onieal, “Bridesman” follows the exploits of the titular gay bridesman (Fowlie) as he attempts to undermine his best friend’s wedding. Fast-paced and irreverent, the series features queer talent both in front of and behind the camera, part of Grindr’s stated mission for the new exploit.
“‘Bridesman’ is tailor-made for the Grindr community — it’s smart, queer, campy, and features sharp commentary on gay dating, heteronormative standards, and Grindr itself,” said Grindr’s Alex Black. “We are so proud to be showcasing some of the finest talent in the queer community as we continue to find new and creative ways to connect our users.”
