Will “The Gilded Age” find Emmys gold?
After its sophomore season, HBO’s historical drama “The Gilded Age” has entered the Emmy race with up to 37 nominations, Variety can exclusively reveal. This includes outstanding drama series, 15 main cast members and the season finale “In Terms of Winning and Losing,” which will represent director Michael Engler and scribe Julian Fellowes in their submissions.
The central couple, Bertha and George Russell, played by Carrie Coon and Morgan Spector, are contenders in the lead acting categories. Coon, an Emmy nominee for the third season of the anthology crime series “Fargo” in 2017, has a solid chance of picking up her second nom, competing against contenders Anna Sawai, Jennifer Aniston and Emma Stone. Already proving to be a big year for the actress, she could find herself in the Oscar race later this year for her remarkable performance in Azazel Jacobs’ family drama “His Three Daughters,...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Gilded Age Season 2 Episode 5, “Close Enough to Touch.”] Denée Benton‘s Peggy Scott experienced a life-threatening moment in The Gilded Age Season 2’s fifth episode. A run-in with aggressive, drunk white men in a Tuskegee restaurant forced Peggy and T. Thomas Fortune (Sullivan Jones) to flee the Alabama town. Booker T. Washington (Michael Braugher) and his wife, Fannie Washington (Brittany Bradford), helped them sneak out of the town in a wagon and hid them in a barn. As they waited in fear, an angry mob of white men with torches hunted them down, and their intentions were lethal. Thankfully, Peggy and Thomas’ whereabouts remained hidden, and the danger passed. The intensity of the moment led to a passionate kiss in the hay between Peggy and the married Thomas, which will have to be addressed in future episodes. Series creator/writer Julian Fellowes tells TV Insider that her experiences in Tuskegee, which ...

Amid a horrifying month in world news, it’s a relief to reenter the world of “The Gilded Age,” where problems are something to be gossiped about over lawn tennis in Newport. In Julian Fellowes’ opulent, HBO-funded take on 19th century New York, the recently concluded Civil War takes up a fraction of the real estate devoted to the Opera War, a brewing fight for patronage and prestige between the establishment-favored Academy of Music and the upstart Metropolitan. Can new money arriviste Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) go head-to-head with grande dame Caroline Astor (Donna Murphy)? Can Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) be gainfully employed as an art teacher and maintain her prospects as a marriageable young woman? Can Marian’s aunt Ada (Cynthia Nixon), much to the horror of her sister Agnes (Christine Baranski), serve soup at a luncheon? What a privilege it is to contemplate these questions, or even share...

“I got interested in the Gilded Age a long time before I was thinking of it in terms of a TV show,” shares “The Gilded Age” creator, writer and executive producer Julian Fellowes. The HBO drama series is set in 1882 and explores the contest between “old money” New York, represented by Christine Baranski and Cynthia Nixon’s characters, and the nouveau riche, portrayed by Carrie Coon and Morgan Spector. The writer explains that what fascinates him most about this period of American history is the “development of this country turning into a world power, or at least recognizing that it was already a world power.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“The Gilded Age” had a very long development period, beginning many years ago at NBC before moving to its home on HBO. During that time, Fellowes noticed in the history he read that these post-Civil War years were “very much dominated by women.
