Playing himself, Pitt will be among the guest acting submissions for the dark comedy, Variety has learned exclusively.

[This story contains spoilers from the season finale of Dave, “Looking for Love.”]
Dave’s guest star roster now includes Brad Pitt.
The movie star guested on the FX comedy’s season three finale as a version of himself opposite creator/star Dave Burd. Pitt, who filmed over several days, many of them night shoots, has considerably more than just a cameo. In fact, FX is submitting him for an Emmy in the guest actor category.
Pitt’s appearance, which has been shrouded in secrecy for many months, began with a passionate, personal letter from Burd to Pitt. In an interview earlier this year, showrunner Jeff Schaffer admits that he and his fellow producers wrote it off as another one of Burd’s crazy pipe dreams. “None of us thought it was going to work, except Dave,” he said, suggesting that it was yet another reminder that Burd and his lofty ideas and declarations should not be dismissed. In this instance,...

Throughout the third season of FX comedy Dave, Lil Dicky’s friend and aspiring director Emma has been shooting a documentary about the rapper’s search for romance. In the latest episode, which aired May 24, it’s finally finished.
After Dave (played by Dave Burd, known as Lil Dicky) tries to micromanage the editing of the Lil Dicky Looking For Love documentary, Emma incorporates that into the doc and it catches him by surprise during a family and friends screening. Afterward, Dave tells Emma he feels manipulated — “but in the most artistic way possible” — and says he has some notes before it’s released. Emma isn’t having it, and calmly tells him that it’s her documentary not his and “there will be no more notes.”
It’s a big moment for Emma, showing a kind of boldness Christine Ko says she’s excited to see for her character.

“Dave” is still a comedy series with a lot of goofy punchlines, but the Fxx show is digging deeper into the consequences of its namesake character’s quest for music superstardom in Season 2.
FX recently unveiled a featurette for “Dave” following its Season 2 premiere on June 16. The series centers on Dave, a neurotic up-and-coming rapper who aims to make it big in the industry.
“At the end of Season 1 Dave broke up with Ally because he chose his career over Ally,” series co-creator Jeff Schaffer said in the featurette. “He couldn’t have both. He got what he wanted more than anything, which was legitimacy. How do you get legitimacy? By getting your own record deal. He got a record deal and it’s not what he thought it was at all.”
That lust for fame, and the consequences of Dave’s single-minded efforts to achieve it, are some of...

The Writers Guild of America Awards were handed during a virtual ceremony on Sunday, March 21. But don’t base your Oscar predictions on these kudos. Every year a slew of Oscar-nominated scripts are deemed ineligible for consideration here due to guild guidelines. Indeed, over the past 12 years only 80 of the Writers Guild of America Awards nominees have numbered among the 120 screenplays that reaped Academy Awards bids. Scroll down for the 2021 Writers Guild of America Awards winners list.
Our odds predict that “Nomadland” will win Best Adapted Screenplay winner at the Oscars but it was not allowed to compete at the WGA Awards. Neither was another Oscar contender in that category: “The Father.” The guild did match the academy three-for-five in this category, with “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “One Night in Miami” and “The White Tiger” competing at both. “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “News of the World” round out the guild nominees.

“It’s rooted in my true beliefs, but taken to a slightly hyperbolic place at times for the sake of comedy,” Dave Burd says in his exclusive interview with Gold Derby about “Dave” (watch the video above), a semi-autobiographical account of his rise as the rapper Lil Dicky. He explains about how this fictionalized version is “one degree further” from his real-life self, “He’ll do more for the sake of a joke or he’ll do more for the sake of advancing a plot.”
In addition to starring as himself on the show, Burd serves as co-creator, executive producer, head writer and songwriter, with his work in the latter-most position further differentiating the character. Burd explains, “Even though I am Lil Dicky in the show and the character’s making music, I wouldn’t necessarily put some of the stuff out as Lil Dicky — I have a different bar.
