American Idol’s season 13 finale on Wednesday night featuring finalists Jena Irene and Caleb Johnson included a number of performances by the two remaining contestants – as well as from eliminated contestants, the judges and a host of well-known talent.
American Idol Finale
The show began with Irene and Johnson collaborating on a medley of Queen’s “We Will rock You,” “Just a Girl” by No Doubt and Tina Turner and Bryan Adams’ “It’s Only Love.” Separately, both finalists got to sing with their musical inspirations. Johnson had the chance of sharing a stage with Kiss for “Love Gun” and “Shout It Out Loud,” while Irene sang Paramore's “Decode” before she was joined by the band for “Aint It Fun.”
Previous American Idol winner Philip Phillips sang "Home" with Sam Woolf before launching into his new single “Raging Fire.” Jessica Meuse sang “Wrecking Ball with Jennifer Nettles after she performed “That Girl.

American Idol Recap
On Wednesday night, the three singers each performed three songs – one selected by Randy Jackson, one selected by judges Harry Connick Jr., Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban and one picked by their hometowns. Unlike in last weeks, Jackson didn’t offer his predictions, merely stating how impressed he was will all of the performances.
Before Ryan Seacrest got down to revealing who no longer had a shot at becoming crowned the next American Idol, he let the singers know who they’d be singing duets with next week. American Idol returned on Wednesday with Caleb Johnson, Jena Irene and Alex Preston battling it out for a spot in the finals next week, while celebrating the singing competition’s 500th episode.
American Idol Recap
Before the Idol hopefuls took the stage, the program featured a montage of some of the show’s greatest moments over the season, which included flashbacks to Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Clay Aiken and even William Hung. Past winners Phillip Phillips, David Cook, Kris Allen, Candice Glover, Lee DeWyze, Fantasia Barrino, Scotty McCreery, and Jordin Sparks all offered their thanks via taped video messages.
Singing “Never Tear Us Apart” by Inxs, chosen by Randy Jackson, Caleb Johnson powered through despite a case of bronchitis and “small vocal cord” hemorrhage. All of the judges agreed that the mentor had selected a good song for Johnson and that despite the setbacks, the singer did a more than commendable job.

American Idol’s latest elimination round revealed the top three contestants, who will be taking visits to their hometowns next week, as one hopeful’s journey was cut short.
American Idol Recap
During their weekly “last supper,” the remaining four singers mused about what it would be like to get the heroes welcome they’d witnessed on previous American Idol seasons. Alex Preston seemed the most anxious to experience the support of his hometown – including the parades, visit to the high school and the intimate local concert they get to put on.
When it was Randy Jackson’s turn to toss in his two cents about Wednesday’s performances, he had the most praise for Jena Irene, who gave the best performance – of Elvis Presley’s “I Can’t Help Falling In Love” – during the show’s makeup, breakup and dedication theme night. Jackson also thought that Caleb Johnson had a great night.

American Idol’s final four contestants – Jena Irene, Caleb Johnson, Jess Meuse and Alex Preston – each sang three songs Wednesday evening. All of the Idol hopefuls had to sing a breakup, makeup and a dedication number for the chance to crack into the top three.
American Idol Recap
Caleb Johnson was first up and sang Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name.” Though it wasn’t as innovative as when Blake Lewis beat boxed it a few seasons ago, Johnson’s take on the song was still unique and deserving of praise from the judges. Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez were particularly complimentary of his rock presence on stage.
Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Travelin Band” served as Johnson’s dedication song. It was a song that Lopez described as being in the rocker’s “wheelhouse.” Most surprising was Johnson’s choice to dramatically slow down the ending.

American Idol’s latest elimination show promised a shocking twist that even the five finalists knew nothing about, though one of them was unfortunately still sent packing.
American Idol Recap
Following the “last supper” segment in which Caleb Johnson revisited his now famous scream during his Whitesnake performance and Sam Woolf gushed over his crush Ariana Grande, Keith Urban took to the stage to perform his new single “Good Thing.”
Randy Jackson, in his weekly recap, had a lot of praise for Jena Irene, Caleb Johnson and Alex Preston. As for Jess Meuse, Jackson doesn’t think she gave a performance that would solidify her place in the top 4 – and neither did Woolf.
Now, for the twist: Ryan Seacrest told the contestants that whether or not someone was going home this week would be in their hands. They would have the chance to vote to either send the person with...

American Idol’s current season is now down to it’s top five contestants after Thursday night’s elimination show.

The results show began with a look at the Idol hopeful’s sitting down to a home-cooked meal by Caleb Johnson’s mom to celebrate the musician's 23rd birthday. The light mood was short-lived in the auditorium, however, as soon it was time to get down to the business of the show – weeding out one more musician on the way to naming the winner of American Idol’s 13th season.
This week, Randy Jackson felt like birthday boy Johnson had nothing to worry about after his back-to-back amazing performances during the country and rock and roll themed night. American Idol’s top six contestants had to pick one country and one rock anthem to perform for Wednesday’s live show.
Jena Irene
Jena Irene was the first Idol-hopeful to hit the stage, taking on Heart’s “Barracuda.” Once again, the young singer brought her charisma and her unique vocals and wowed both the audience and the judges. Her performance convinced the judges that she could be the one to beat this year.
For her country song, Irene chose former Idol winner Carrie Underwood’s “So Small.” Instead of sticking to the song’s country melody, Irene reimagined it with her sometimes-haunting sound that completely blew resident country judge Keith Urban away.
Sam Woolf
Sam Woolf selected Imagine Dragon’s “It’s Time” for his rock song, which the judges agreed was a wise choice. Harry Connick Jr. believed Woolf’s performance, claiming he felt a “sense of commitment” from the young singer,...

American Idol’s results show Thursday started off with a surprise twist – The Following star Kevin Bacon stepping into Ryan Seacrest’s hosting shoes to kick off the night.
American Idol Recap
After Bacon passed the torch back to Seacrest, the top seven finalists were shown chatting about their performances and shared what they’d most like to do with a brand new Ford Mustang. Then, finally, the show got around to hearing Randy Jackson’s personal recap of Wednesday night.
Jackson, basically parroting the judges, mentioned Dexter Robert’s desperate need to make the songs he chooses his own. The former judge had similar advice for Cj Harris and wondered if Jess Meuse – who was harshly critiqued by the judges Wednesday – had done enough onstage to get America’s votes. Alex Preston, Sam Woolf, Caleb Johnson and Jena Irene, according to Jackson, would likely all be safe.

American Idol returned on Thursday to narrow it down to seven finalists following Wednesday’s 80s-themed night.
American Idol Recap
Making his weekly predictions, judge-turned-mentor Randy Jackson said he believed that Dexter Roberts, Jess Meuse and Caleb Johnson had all secured spots to remain in the competition for their performances. He also had some words of praise for the poor pitch-plagued C.J. Harris.
Jackson gave Sam Woolf, who was saved by the judges last week and performed an acoustic version of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time,” a 50/50 chance of sticking around. He was less positive in his reviews of Malaya Watson and Alex Preston, who sang Chaka Khan’s “Through the Fire” and The Police’s “Every Breath You Take,” respectively. Though he wasn’t entirely keen on Jena Irene’s “I Love Rock N Roll,” he thought she’d get enough votes to be okay.

American Idol’s top eight returned again this week after judges Harry Connick Jr., Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban used the season’s one and only save on Sam Woolf. This week, the finalists were required to pick a song from the 80s.
Jena Irene made a bold choice in reimagining Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock N Roll.” Irene started off the classic song sitting down at the piano, allowing the song to build up as she belted out the second half. The judges reactions were mixed, with Connick critiquing the arrangement and Lopez praising the young singer for another original performance.
Country boy Dexter Roberts chose to sing Georgia Satellites’ “Keep Your Hands to Yourself.” Mentor David Cook was on Roberts to enunciate better – and not to let the other guitarist on the stage steal the spotlight from him. Overall, the judges felt like Roberts' performance was passable,...

American Idol was looking to whittle down the playing field to the top seven singers Thursday, but a save from the judges kept the talent at eight following the “Audition” performances on Wednesday.

Ultimately, it was Woolf, the 17-year-old crooner from Florida, who failed to get enough votes from America. American Idol’s top nine took on rock songs for the “I’m With the Band” theme reserved for this week. In preparation for the latest round of the competition, the contestants met with Pete Wentz and Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy, who gave them tips on touring with one another and compiling a set list.
In keeping with the theme, the nine finalists performed a group rock medley, which included hits from Fall Out Boy, Coldplay and the Rolling Stones.
Alex Preston sang No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak,” remaking the hit ska band song into a jazzier version of itself. While Preston kept the chorus pretty much the same as when Gwen Stefani sang it, he dramatically changed up the melody on the verses. Preston’s artistry was both apparent and impressive, but the judges concluded that he may have lost some of the raw emotion of the song.

American Idol returned on Wednesday with “Movie Night,” where the contestants performed songs made famous by a film. Judges Harry Connick Jr., Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban appeared more satisfied on Wednesday than they’ve been in past weeks as they heard the Top 11 singers perform.

Though Woolf left his guitar behind in order to achieve a more dynamic performance, the judges still felt that the Florida teen could break out of his shell a bit more to better engage the audience.
Jess Meuse took on "Sounds of Silence" from The Graduate. With her guitar strapped on, Meuse gave an earnest performance that showcased her gritty voclas. Unfortuantely for the singer, the band botched the song somewhere in the middle, making for a bumpy patch in the number.
