Let’s Talk About Residuals Baby
Possible blueprint?: As is so often the case days, it all started with a tweet. Writer-director Carina Adly MacKenzie took to X to throw a proverbial grenade into the long-running debate around streaming residuals – the U.S. unions’ long-held desire for writers and actors to be compensated fairly when shows on the likes of Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+ perform above expectations. “Fun fact: in France, Netflix already reports their viewership to writers monthly and pays writers based on that viewership, because it’s the law there,” wrote Carina. “They literally already have that system in place.” Curiosities on both sides of the Atlantic...

The USA Network legal drama Suits has seen a surge in popularity on Netflix and Peacock over the summer, with over 3.1 billion minutes of the show watched across both streamers from June 26 to July 2. Nielsen predicts that the show’s popularity on streaming will only continue to grow, given that 75% of the views calculated during that time were generated by only the first three of the series’ nine seasons. With the show pulling such huge numbers nearly four years after its finale, many people have been wondering if the actors and writers will gain anything from the billions of views their show is bringing to these streaming services.
The SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes of 2023 have brought to light the stark pay discrepancies between broadcast TV and streaming, especially when it comes to residuals. Actors and writers working for broadcast and cable shows receive payments when their episodes appear in reruns and syndication.

Turmoil at HBO Max has sent shockwaves throughout the industry this week, and Hollywood creatives are going public with their anger about how Warner Bros. Discovery is handling content.
Uncertainty and dismay loomed when news broke that Wbd was killing the nearly completed DC film “Batgirl,” which was to have debuted on HBO Max. The parent company also quietly removed a number of HBO Max original films from the streaming service, and TheWrap reported Wednesday that Chief Executive Officer David Zaslav is expected to announce a major restructuring of HBO Max and Discovery+ that will result in a gutting of HBO Max, significant layoffs for its executives and staff to minimize redundancies with HBO and a combined streaming service with Discovery+ with a harder line separation between the scripted and unscripted content operations.

In the biggest twist from the two-part Season 3 finale of the CW’s Roswell, New Mexico, the original series’ cast member Shiri Appleby made a surprise cameo in the final minutes.
“I can say that she will be back in Season 4,” Roswell, Nm executive producer Chris Hollier told TVLine at the time.
Appleby’s return has now been set. She is currently set to appear in two episodes of Season 4, starting with #409.
In the Season 3 finale, we saw Appleby in a brief cameo in the role of Allie, where she is awakened by a naked woman (possibly an extra-terrestrial) who was searching for Liz Ortecho. “Liz Ortecho was a student of mine,” Allie told the woman. To everyone’s surprise, Allie turned out to be Appleby, who played the original Liz in The WB’s Roswell.

Steven Krueger is returning to The CW and reuniting with Julie Plec.
The actor, best known for starring on The Originals for five seasons, is joining the cast of Roswell, New Mexico for its third season.
Deadline first reported the news.
He is set to play Heath, "Liz’s ambitious colleague at a high-tech laboratory in Los Angeles. Despite his casual irreverence, which Liz finds infuriating, Heath cares deeply for his work and like Liz, is willing to do whatever it takes to make the world a better place," according to the outlet.
He and Liz struggle to agree on anything, but his different approach ultimately pushes her to break her old patterns and discover new ways of looking at the world.
Krueger might be pulling double duty on the series after landing the male lead in Showtime pilot Yellowjackets, with the cabler yet to make a decision on the future of the project.

Carina Adly MacKenzie, the creator of Roswell, New Mexico, has left her position as co-showrunner of the series ahead of Season 3 due to “fundamental differences.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter story that broke the news, the decision comes after MacKenzie’s relationship with studio Warner Bros. Television has “been strained for some time,” citing a Twitter incident in which MacKenzie criticized UK distributor ITV over cutting a gay love scene from the broadcast of the show that led Warner Bros. to have to do “damage control” as a recent example. More broadly, the article states: “During her time on the show, she is said to have fostered a working environment that some say was rife with tension.”
Really, really, Really upset to hear that @itv cut out a (pretty tame) love scene between two men and kept a (much more raunchy) heterosexual sex scene in their airing of an episode of #RoswellNM tonight.

The CW is switching things up as it adapts to running out of episodes of some of its most popular series.
As previously reported, the Coronavirus pandemic has brought TV production to a halt. Even some of the filmed episodes will not be aired because they are still in post-production.
Fresh off the news that Supernatural's final season has been pulled from the schedule because the episodes are not ready for transmission, comes another big blow.
The network has pulled this week's episodes of both Supergirl and Batwoman from the schedule and will air reruns for at least the next two weeks.
There are still a handful of episodes of each show in the can, but the network is likely trying to spread them out to May sweeps.
To help solve this crisis, the network will air the five-part Crisis on Infinite Earths across three nights in April.

The need for authentic storytelling takes more than just a screenwriter. Outside research, good intentions, and personal experience come together to tell a story that can, hopefully, influence and inspire others to see themselves reflected in a piece of popular culture. Authentic representation should allow for more stories to take flight, and such is the case with the relationship between Define American and The CW series, “Roswell, N.M.”
“Roswell, N.M” is a reboot of the television series “Roswell” which aired on the then-wb Network from 1999-2002. The teen drama followed a group of high schoolers, four of whom were alien survivors from the infamous 1947 UFO crash. But it’s immediately clear how the original series reflected a time before prominent calls for diversity. The book series cast its heroine as a Latina, but outside of her last name there was nothing about the character that emphasized her roots.

When it comes to casting sisters on TV, there’s good, there’s uncanny and then there’s whatever crazy magic is happening over at Roswell, New Mexico between Jeanine Mason and Amber Midthunder (aka Liz and Rosa Ortecho).

We are still months away from the debut of Roswell, New Mexico Season 2, but the showrunner of the series took to social media over the weekend with some teases for fans.
Carina Adly MacKenzie dished five pieces of information across five tweets on Sunday, and it's a lot to process.
The first of which concerns Liz's mother, Helena Ortecho, who will definitely be setting foot back in the alien-filled city of Roswell.
No casting has been revealed, but we do know that Helena will be back for a "family dinner," but nothing beyond that was revealed.
Helena was not part of Roswell, New Mexico Season 1, so this tease confirms that Liz will be getting a blast from the past during the new batch of episodes.
The second tease reveals that despite not airing during October, there will be a spooky episode.

“We’re very excited that Jason will be joining us for a multi-episode arc,” executive producer Carina Adly MacKenzie said in a statement.

“It’s only fitting that he’s playing a (currently top secret) character with deep ties to Roswell, New Mexico’s history."

In a fascinating bit of retro casting, it was announced Sunday at New York Comic Con’s Warner Bros. Television panel that Jason Behr—star of the 1999 series Roswell—will join the Roswell, New Mexico cast in a recurring role. Also added to The CW/Warner Bros. Television’s sophomore series will be Gaius Charles, who played fan favorite Brian “Smash” Williams on Friday Night Lights.
Behr played Max Evans in the late-‘90s series; that same character (played by Nathan Dean) ended season 1 dead after sacrificing himself to resurrect Rosa Ortecho (Amber Midthunder), the long-dead sister of his love, Liz (Jeanine Mason).
“We are very, very lucky that Jason is joining us for a multi-episode arc, at least four,” said showrunner Carina Adly MacKenzie during the panel. “I was sitting and watching him work and thinking, I can’t believe he’s here. It’s been an extraordinary experience.
