Philip Glass has compiled 20 of his original etudes in an upcoming book that’s set to arrive October 31st. Written for solo piano, Philip Glass Piano Etudes presents this music in a deluxe boxed set.
The whopping nine-pound clothbound box includes the printed sheet music — titled The Complete Folios 1-20 — as well as Studies in Time: Essays on the Music of Philip Glass, a collection of original essays by Martin Scorsese, Alice Waters, Laurie Anderson, Ira Glass, Ari Shapiro, Pico Iyer, and many more, putting Glass’ impact into perspective.
Glass began composing these etudes in the early 1990s as a method to, in his own words, “address the deficiencies in my own playing.” The twentieth etude was completed in 2012, and they’ve since become a go-to source for both beginner and experienced pianists.
Pre-orders for the beautifully-designed set are ongoing, and you can see photos of it below.

Alan Cumming is busy. He’s been touring his one-man show “Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age,” he’s the host of Peacock’s U.S. version of the hit Netherlands reality competition show “The Traitors” – think an elaborate game of Mafia in a Scottish castle with pseudo-celebs and real people — and he’ll be stateside in Los Angeles on Jan. 28 to return as host of AARP’s Movies for Grownups Awards.
I caught up with the Tony winner for a chat on this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast.
When did you first feel like you were a grownup?
It’s so funny because I talk about this in my show that I’m doing here, about this exact thing. And I actually only felt I was a grownup when I was asked to play Eli Gold in “The Good Wife,” because I actually remember thinking, “Why are...

Acclaimed director Christopher Nolan has weighed in yet again on the controversy surrounding Warner Bros. Pictures’ plans to release all of its 2021 films concurrently in theaters and on HBO Max.
Appearing on the NPR program “All Things Considered,” the director elaborated on a previous scorched-earth statement criticizing the studio for disrespecting Hollywood talent and compromising the health of global movie theaters.
NPR host Ari Shapiro asked the “Tenet” director if he was “satisfied” with how he learned of the decision to roll out tentpoles like “Dune” and “Wonder Woman 1984.” Nolan expanded on how the dramatic move will hurt Hollywood’s working-class artisans and performers.
“The economics of it are unsound unless you’re purely looking at movements in share price, number of eyeballs on the new streaming service. Theatrical is really only one part of what we’re talking about here. You’re talking about your home video window,...
