This article contains Naomi spoilers.
Black girls and young women are underrepresented in fantasy and science fiction. In the amorphous genre we’ll call “superhero” television (and film), there are very few, if any, major characters who are young, Black girls. We didn’t really see a Black girl superhero in live-action on TV until Jennifer Pierce gets powers and becomes Lightning in Black Lightning. And while that character is important, she’s the only one. It’s not that Black girls don’t exist in these worlds, but that they are largely relegated to supporting characters whose stories serve to further the development of a white and/or male lead—if they’re even given stories of their own. To be a Black girl in a superhero story is to be a sidekick, if that.
That changed with Naomi.
Naomi skateboarded its way into our hearts the moment the titular character appeared on-screen.

Imagine finding out that your adopted parents took the lives of your biological parents.

The Critics Choice Awards annually honor achievements in cinematic and television work. They often set the stage in terms of Oscar award winners as well. The Critics Choice Association is the largest critics organization in the United States and Canada, representing more than 525 media critics and entertainment journalists. It was established in 2019 with the formal merger of the Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association, recognizing the intersection between film, television and streaming content.

Nathan and Anthony will never be best friends on The CW’s Naomi because the title character romantically chose one over the other.
But, as fans saw on Tuesday’s installment, the high school juniors do have a greater respect for one another after finding out the school float vandal was Esme. While in detention, the two also had an overdue heart-to-heart about Naomi making Nathan her boyfriend and how that made Anthony feel as well as the rift between Port Oswego natives and the military kids who look down on them.

In our Q&a series Last Call, we get down to the bottom of every last thing with some of our favorite celebs - from the last time they were starstruck to the last song they listened to. This week, Mary-Charles Jones takes our call.
"To get the chance to do something with [Ava DuVernay] and getting to see firsthand why she's so well-respected and why she is such this powerhouse of a woman has been amazing."
When Mary-Charles Jones booked the role of Annabelle in The CW's "Naomi," the first thing she did was run to her nearest comic-book store to pick up a few copies of the fairly new DC comic series. "The girl at the comic book store was like, 'Did you know they're making this into a show?' I was like, 'Oh, I had no idea,' and I just kind of walked on out,...

Even when she's out of town for the week, Naomi can't escape the alien high jinks!
Naomi Season 1 Episode 5 saw Naomi and company out in the wilderness for the week, on what was supposed to be a chill week in which Naomi could decompress from all the various stressors of her life and be with her friends, and possibly continue to reconnect with Nathan.
But the universe had other plans for her, and at this point, she should expect nothing less.
Coming off the events of Naomi Season 1 Episode 4, it was nice to see the series not gloss over what happened between Naomi and the bounty hunter, Jaeger.
Naomi has been in some dicey situations, but that was by far the most dangerous encounter Naomi has had yet, and before Dee arrived, she was all by herself and completely overmatched.

Superman & Lois on Tuesday explored a possible connection between the couple’s latest foes, and no amount of banana-nut muffins can make their discovery easier to digest.
For starters, Chrissy’s investigation into Ally Allston basically confirmed Lois’ worst fears about the suspected cult leader. A nonconsensual drug trip transported Chrissy to an alternate world, one where she encountered a “bizarro” version of herself. It’s also worth noting that this other world was ruled by Ally, whom we’ve learned is carrying on her father’s legacy with the help of a mysterious pendant she inherited after his death.

Batman once said, "A hero can be anyone." And that's certainly a sentiment The CW has taken to heart. Back in July 2020, the network made history by casting Javicia Leslie as Ryan Wilder, making her the first Black actress to suit up as Batwoman. (The 34-year-old stepped into the titular role after Ruby Rose exited the show that same year.) And, the trailblazing moments didn't stop there. Two years later, in collaboration with Ava DuVernay, they brought another Black female superhero into the fold: 17-year-old Kaci Walfall, who stars as the lead character in Naomi. So yeah, on screen they're kicking ass. And off it, they're doing the same, serving as role models to...

Ava DuVernay had a vision to bring a new kind of superhero story to life in The CW's "Naomi": an autonomous story where the titular character (played by Kaci Walfall) could live in her own "Naomi-verse" and redefine what representation looks like on TV. The new DC drama follows "cool, confident, comic book–loving teenager" Naomi in pursuit of "her hidden destiny" as she unearths a supernatural mystery in her hometown and discovers her own special powers.
"It's representation, it's not tokenism, it's normalization."
Compared to other superhero shows that have used race as a plot device, "Naomi" offers a refreshing approach to representation that doesn't throw the obvious in viewers' faces. Though the series centers Walfall's character, the focus is not placed on her skin color, but rather her perspective as a high schooler through a comic-driven coming-of-age story. Perhaps it was Dee’s words of wisdom, the bounty hunter’s aggressive attack, or all of the above. But when The CW’s titular Naomi chose the person she wanted to be romantic with, she picked and kissed Nathan.
Kaci Walfall, who stars as Naomi, says the smooch was doubly special because it was her first on-screen kiss. However, if you think it was romantic in real life, the actress attests that it was too technical to be anything close to mushy.

The series comes from the mind of Ava DuVernay and follows Naomi (Kaci Walfall) as she sets out to uncover the truth about a supernatural event that shakes up her hometown of Port Oswego, Or. In addition to introducing us to our new favorite superhero, the show boasts a talented cast of actors, including Daniel Puig, who plays a swoon-worthy high school jock named Nathan. When the entertainment industry hit pause in 2020, Georgia’s only television festival was forced to make the same change that so many did, readjusting its annual Scad TVfest into a virtual event. Not only did that event go on without a hitch, it became a tremendous success, and made the team realize that it was a trend they want to continue after the pandemic ends.
“After presenting TVfest virtually for the first time, we were amazed with the reach, interest and attendance on a global scale,” says Christina Routhier, executive director of Scad Theaters and Festivals. “The format allowed for industry leaders, prospective students, even our special guests and honorees to participate from locations all over the world. “It’s so great for representation and it’s also grounded in normalization,” says Naomi star Kaci Walfall of the barrier breaking CW superhero series from Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship. “So it’s a story that is just about a 16-year old girl whose Black, who happens to be a superhero and I think that is supercool ‘cause it’s not something we see, it’s not something we see,” Walfall added.

Full disclosure: I haven't read the Naomi comics.
So, I am coming into this season at large as a newbie, though I'm not entirely ignorant of the DC Universe and everything that it entails. But I wanted to put that out there, as some easter eggs and casual mentions of things that ardent fans may pick up on may go over my head.
However, I'll be here with a fresh pair of eyes, and if Naomi Season 1 Episode 1 is anything to go by, I'll be singing the praises of Naomi for weeks to come.
Pilots are a tricky thing.
Often, they either work, or they don't. And you bet a lot on a pilot because if it doesn't grip viewers, then they won't stick around.
You'll want to stick around for this one.
The best part of the opening hour is how they're able to introduce the characters and the...

Naomi is the latest entry in The CW’s slate of shows based on DC Comics’ characters. Written and executive produced by Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship, and adapted from the comic book of the same name by Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker and Jamal Campbell for the Wonder Comics imprint, the show follows the journey of a cool, confident, comic book–loving teenager as she pursues her hidden destiny.
Naomi looks at superheroes from the perspective of the small town folks who read about it in the news. Naomi runs a Superman fan site. He is fiction in her world… until he’s not. When she misses a Superman sighting—or what everyone assumes is a “stunt”—in her small town of Port Oswego, she jumps at the opportunity to investigate the appearance. The more she looks into the stunt, the closer she gets to learning the truth about herself.

Most of the superheroes on the DC-on-The-cw dramas have a long history with each other. Their comic book counterparts have been around for decades, and even in these adaptations, the characters have crossed over into each other’s worlds to team up and take down villains more than once.
But when “Naomi” joins the lineup on Jan. 11, the show — and the titular character, played by Kaci Walfall — is on her own.
She may be a big fan of Superman within the series — so much so that she runs one of the largest fan sites in the world about the DC hero — but she lives in a very different universe than the one in which The CW’s Superman (of “Superman & Lois”) resides.
“I want this to be an autonomous story about Naomi,” executive producer Ava DuVernay tells Variety. “One of the things I really wanted was for her to live in her own universe.

Even though high schooler Naomi (Kaci Walfall) tells us in her opening voiceover that “everyone has a superhero origin story,” hers immediately looks different enough from most on TV to stand apart. For one, she follows in the footsteps of Javicia Leslie as The CW’s second Black woman to lead a DC superhero show, albeit one as different from “Batwoman” in tone and storyline as can be. From executive producers Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship — and with canny, fluid pilot direction by Amanda Marsalis — the CW series feels something like if “Superman” blended up weekly comics with the sensibilities of a “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” or “Secret Files of Alex Mack.” For another, Walfall’s Naomi isn’t some moody outcast waiting in the wings for something amazing to happen to her, as is the case for so many other potential heroes. In fact, as the first episode conveys...
