His work triumphed at the Oscars, but the Booker-shortlisted author isn’t interested in acclaim. He talks to the Guardian about race, taking on Mark Twain and why there’s nothing worse than preaching to the choir
It’s 10am on the morning of the Oscars, and Percival Everett is nowhere to be seen. We’re supposed to be meeting at his neighbourhood coffee shop in leafy South Pasadena, a suburb of Los Angeles, before he makes his way across the city for the ceremony, which begins its long march towards best picture just after lunch.
American Fiction, the film of his novel Erasure, is nominated for best adapted screenplay, up against Barbie, but tipped to win. The hour went forward last night, but surely he knows that? At 10.25am I WhatsApp him, but the message remains unread. Eventually I call. “Yes, this is Percival Everett. We’re meeting in half an hour?...

There’s a certain image that comes to mind when you hear “‘The Walking Dead’ set in France.” It’s one filled with undead zombies tearing through Parisian streets and the Eiffel Tower framed by panic. Perhaps shockingly, that ambitious visual language is exactly what the second episode of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” delivers.
“Any filmmaker will tell you one of the hardest things you can ever do is take over the center of a city to create chaos and mayhem,” Daniel Percival, the director of four episodes of “Daryl Dixon” including Sunday’s “Alouette,” told TheWrap. According to Percival, it took “months and months” of negotiating with Paris and city authorities to produce the opening of Episode 2.
“Alouette” opens on a flashback. The series wordlessly follows Isabelle (Clémence Poésy), documenting her life as a thieving party girl. The episode starts with Isabelle perched on the edge of a club’s balcony,...

Filmmaker and video essayist Patrick H. Willems has some thoughts about Zack Snyder (who will henceforth be known as our "himbo auteur"). He's proposed that the key to understanding the director is his love of John Boorman's 1981 medieval fantasy epic "Excalibur." Snyder has expressed his love of Boorman's film many times over the years, even incorporating it into his version of the Caped Crusader's origin story in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." Snyder's ultimate goal as an artist, Willems reasons, is basically making his version of "Excalibur," a film Roger Ebert once described as "a record of the comings and goings of arbitrary, inconsistent, shadowy, figures who are not heroes but simply giants run amok."
The more you think about it, the sounder this argument becomes. It certainly explains Snyder's tendency to craft brutal, bombastic films that prioritize spectacle over coherent storytelling or political messaging. Indeed, given his love of mythic storytelling,...

Auckland, July 20 (Ians) New Zealand celebrated a historic victory on Thursday at a nearly full Eden Park, edging Norway 1-0 in the opening match of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, here.
This triumph put an end to its previous poor campaign performance. In its five World Cup outings, New Zealand failed to reap any victory in the past 15 games.
The winning goal was scored by Hannah Wilkinson in front of 42,137 spectators, while Ria Percival failed to add the second as her penalty was thwarted later by the woodwork, a Xinhua report said.

Parsifal III is a lavish 177-foot sailing yacht made in 2005 by world-renowed Italian shipyard Perini Navi. Fresh designer Remi Tessier designed the interior of the boat.
Chef Adam Glick, who has appeared on Below Deck in past seasons, told E! News in 2020 that a large ship like Parsifal III can cost prospective owners “30, 40, 50 million” to buy. The sails alone can cost up to $300,000 to replace.

Little House on the Prairie star Alison Arngrim played Nellie Oleson from 1974 until 1982. TV audiences loved tuning in each week and watching her character’s sassy exchanges with Laura Ingalls (played by actor Melissa Gilbert). What is Arngrim doing now? Here’s everything we know.

‘Little House on the Prairie’ Star Melissa Gilbert Sticks to a Budget: ‘I Was Reckless in My Spending Habits’
Arngrim enjoyed working on Little House on the Prairie. However, she was ready to leave the show as the seventh season approached. In her book, Confessions of a Prairie B****, she says her character’s storylines became less interesting. Arngrim’s character, Nellie, was a mean girl, but she became mellow after marrying on-screen husband Percival Dalton (played by the late Steve Tracy). Arngrim wasn’t happy with the way things were going.

“Riverdale” is taking a time warp back to 1955 to kick off its final season.
The CW’s outgoing drama dropped the official trailer for season 7 on Thursday, setting up the shenanigans that Archie (Kj Apa) and the crew will endure as they try to piece together what happened following last season’s finale. After facing off against Percival and narrowly missing a deadly comet, the gang was transported back to the ’50s, where they found themselves reliving high school… again.

Unfortunately for the crew, only Jughead (Cole Sprouse) is aware of all that transpired prior to their new 1955 reality.
As the two-minute trailer reveals, Jughead has the tall task of trying to convince his pals — who find themselves living very unexpected lives and paired up in the most shocking relationships — why they don’t actually belong in the ’50s.

The battle of Good vs. Evil was fought on Riverdale Season 6 Episode 21.
From dark rituals to mind-controlled Ghoulies, there were many more layers to this big fight than meets the eye. Percival didn't make this battle easy for our heroes.
Did the fight live up to the anticipation? Or was it just another mind game by Percival?
"Chapter One Hundred and Sixteen: The Stand" was a jam-packed chapter. A lot happened to our heroes in their war against Percival, from one mini fight to the next and the surprise twists.
It would've been easy for Riverdale to drag this out into Riverdale Season 6 Episode 22. Especially since this is only the penultimate episode of Riverdale Season 6, and the season finale is coming up.
I'm glad Riverdale went in this direction because the battle ended on a high note before the comet would arrive.

Rivervale is back, and it's just as supernatural as ever.
A trip to Riverdale's "Upside Down" on Riverdale Season 6 Episode 20 was more a fact-finding mission than a spooky road trip adventure. Finding information on Riverdale's current Big Bad was the name of the game, especially with the brewing war coming.
But with only three chapters left on Riverdale Season 6, any new information or developments are more important than the last.
Enter "Chapter One Hundred and Fifteen: Return to Rivervale." This was an exposition-heavy chapter more than anything else.
Questions about Percival Pickens? We've got answers!
Percival basically laid out everything; he covered his origin story, his big motivation, his plans, and why he did what he did. Plus, the surrounding characters filled in the rest of the gaps to explain the powers and why everything is happening.
It's great to finally get all the answers. There were a lot...

This Riverdale review contains spoilers.
Riverdale Season 6 Episode 19
“Welcome to the Sisterhood of Night, ladies.”
When Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) returned from The Sweet Hereafter to appear in what was, disappointingly, a glorified cameo earlier in this season of Riverdale, fans were bummed by the lack of screen time that the now-twentysomething witch received.
However, this latest episode served not only as a satisfying epilogue to Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, but it also brought witchcraft to The Town with Pep in a huge way. (Not to mention that it leaves the door wide open for Sabrina’s return in the future). But for right now, the focus is that the television Archieverse finally has a satisfying crossover in an episode that will rank high among this season’s best.
There was an intimidating amount that this episode needed to accomplish. First and foremost, it had to resolve the cliffhanger of bringing...

Something wicked has come to town on Riverdale Season 6 Episode 19. Wickedly fabulous, that is.
Sabrina Spellman is here to save the day and fight back against Percival Pickens' death plague. There is no witch more powerful in the Riverdale/Greendale universe than Sabrina.
And before any war of Good vs. Evil starts, we need our heroes back on the battlefield.
"Chapter One Hundred And Fourteen: The Witches of Riverdale" felt like a pause-and-recharge episode. After all the biblical chaos on Riverdale Season 6 Episode 18, there needed to be some downtime to undo Percival's recent damage.
He literally brought down the plagues! How much more evil could he get when he killed half the cast?
You could feel the slower pacing in the chapter's tone. Everything was more serene, the pacing spent more time telling us what needed to happen, and the main storyline was stuck until the victims came back to life.

Well, a lot of our favorite Riverdale characters are dead when this week’s episode opens… but luckily, people don’t stay dead in Riverdale for long.
