[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “Stranger Things,” “The Alienist,” “The Walking Dead,” “End of the F***ing World,” and the “John Wick” films.]
In the season finale of TNT’s “The Alienist,” a serial killer slams a burlap sack containing a cat repeatedly on the wall, killing the cat as it shrieks in pain. On Netflix’s “End of the F***ing World,” a boy kills animals growing up, and several episodes later, a dog is carelessly run over by a truck and must be put out of its misery. In the second season of “Stranger Things,” one character’s cat is found partially eaten by an otherworldly monster. And regularly on shows like “The Magicians” and “Game of Thrones,” animals often perish in horrifying ways.

Paul Wesley may feast on woodland creatures as reformed vampire Stefan Salvatore on "The Vampire Diaries," but off-screen, he's much more concerned about animal welfare than his vamp counterpart. Welsey and his "Tvd" co-star (and off-screen wife) Torrey DeVitto have been confirmed as the hosts of The Humane Society of the United States' H-Couture 2012.
The swanky fashion show, which will be held at a private estate in Brentwood, CA on Saturday Sept. 22, will feature high fashion for men and women, designed specifically not to be harmful to animals. "Conscious couture," if you will.
"We are excited to be hosting the first ever H-Couture event on behalf of The Humane Society of the United States because we both support events that promote compassion for animals," Paul says.
"Fashion should be fun, and I don't see how wearing animal fur can be anything other than cruel and unnecessary," agrees Torrey. "This event...

"The Artist" may be getting showered with praise and nominations, but there's one voting body who won't be honoring it this year: The Humane Society. Yes, the animal advocacy organization made a surprising move when Michel Hazanavicius' ode to cinema history was snubbed for a Feature Film nomination at the group's annual Genesis Awards -- this despite the hoopla surrounding the film's pseudo-movie star, Uggie the dog. (Perhaps they are tired of people talking about him?) So what ended up taking the place of "The Artist"? "Dolphin Tale," "War Horse," "Planet of the Apes" and "Rio." Yes, "Rio" -- the film that was completely animated and featured talking geese and toucans. "It was an outstanding year for major feature films with strong animal protection content," said Humane Society senior director Beverly Kaskey, adding that "Animal welfare concerns, such as chimpanzees being used in research which is addressed in '...

Heroes star Hayden Panettiere was reduced to tears when she was honoured by the Humane Society Of The United States for her protests against the slaughter of whales in Japan.
The actress cried when she was given a standing ovation at the Humane Society's Genesis Awards on Saturday, and was forced to visit the bathroom following her speech to regain her composure.
Panettiere was given the Gretchen Wyler Award, which recognises celebrities who bring attention to animal causes, for her work with the sea-faring mammals last year.
She told the audience, "As an actress, you always dream of getting awards like the Golden Globe award, but I never expected to get an award that is this special and important to me as this.
"There are people who dedicate their entire lives to preserving the environment and defending animals, they are so much more deserving of something like this."
Beverly Kaskey, of the Humane Society, adds, "She's an inspiring example to her generation, using her compassion, courage and celebrity to help animals in a very effective way."
Panettiere's family and boyfriend Milo Ventimiglia - who kindly escorted her back from the bathroom - were in attendance at the event at the Beverly Hilton hotel in California.

Heroes star Hayden Panettiere cried Saturday night as the Humane Society gave her an activism award for protesting the annual dolphin slaughter in Southwestern Japan last year. Hayden received the Gretchen Wyler Award, given annually at the Genesis Awards to a celebrity who brings attention to animal causes. Wyler, who founded the awards and was also an actress, died last May from breast cancer, two months after presenting the first award to Paul McCartney. Hayden’s parents and her boyfriend – and Heroes costar – Milo Ventimiglia were in the audience and watched a video of the actress and others paddling out on surfboards and confronting fishermen,...
