Since The CW revamped its schedule, the football drama All American remains one of the last originals.
Since its spinoff, All American: Homecoming, was also renewed and is scheduled to air sometime in the summer of 2024, it’s not overall surprising they want to capitalize on both.
It’s not uncommon for a TV to expand its universe into spinoffs. Most often, procedural-type franchises such as CSI, Law & Order, and the One Chicago Universe have done it.
However, we’ve seen teen shows do it successfully, including The Vampire Diaries universe on The CW and The Fosters transitioning into Good Trouble on Freeform.
All American and All American: Homecoming are succeeding the way they are. Do we need additional spinoffs?
What is All American About?
All American was inspired by the life of professional football player Spencer Paysinger. Daniel Ezra portrays the fictional lead role of Spencer James.

[This story contains spoilers from the season six premiere of All American, “Things Done Changed.”]
After nearly a yearlong gap since its season five finale, All American made its season six premiere on The CW on Monday night.
The sports drama that is centered around football player Spencer James (Daniel Ezra) — which has followed the star wide receiver and his friends from his days at Crenshaw High up through his freshman year at the fictitious Golden Angeles University last season — will mark 100 episodes on May 27. It’s a milestone Ezra says came as a shock to him, like many others in the series.
“When I was cast, that was a surprise. When the pilot got picked up, that was a surprise. I didn’t expect any of it,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It took me two seasons to give up my apartment in London. I just thought, ‘They’re going to send me back.’”

All American: Homecoming: Season Three; Several CW Series Regulars to Have Reduced Roles for 2023-24
In May, All American: Homecoming was renewed by The CW for a third season, but the renewal came with some concessions. The series faces budget cuts, so some series regulars will have reduced roles in the upcoming episodes.
All American: Homecoming is a spin-off of All American, which The CW also renewed for the 2023-24 broadcast season. The series follows students attending Bringston University, a highly competitive Hbcu (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) in Atlanta.
Deadline reports that Geffri Maya, Sylvester Powell, Netta Walker, and Mitchell Edwards will return as full series regulars for season three.
However, viewers will likely be seeing less of Cory Hardrict, Rhoyle Ivy King, Peyton Alex Smith, and Kelly Jenrette. Hardrict and Ivy have a reduced episode guarantee, so they'll most likely appear in fewer...

As budget cuts hit The CW's returning original programming, several stars will not be on the shows next season as series regulars.
All American: Homecoming is the latest show to announce its changes ahead of next season.
According to Deadline, Peyton Alex Smith, who plays Damon Sims on the series, will not be back as a series regular.
If you watch All American: Homecoming online, you know Damon has been pivotal since All American: Homecoming Season 1 Episode 1.
While casting changes were expected, it's surprising Smith is one of the actors to have their contract changed.
There's no confirmation whether the actor will stage a comeback in a recurring or guest capacity.
Time will tell, but hopefully, he will appear on-screen to wrap up Damon's storyline if the actor decides against accepting the contract.
Additionally, Kelly Jenrette, who plays Bringston University president Amara Patterson, will return as a recurring player.

Fans of All American: Homecoming should expect big changes when the show returns for its third season, with some long-time cast members returning on reduced schedules. According to Deadline, the series’ original male lead Peyton Alex Smith, along with fellow main cast member Kelly Jenrette, will not continue as series regulars. Instead, the pair are expected to return in recurring roles. Deadline reports that Jenrette and her team decided to recur rather than return as a series regular on a reduced episodic guarantee. Cory Hardrict and Rhoyle Ivy King are two of the cast members who will be returning as series regulars but on reduced episodic guarantees, meaning they will likely be in fewer episodes. Main stars Geffri Maya, Sylvester Powell, Mitchell Edwards, and Netta Walker will all be returning as full-fledged series regulars. The status of fellow cast member Camille Hyde is not yet known. The CW has made decisions on the future of its remaining bubble dramas, and with every bit of good news, there's some bad.
We'll start with the good.
Superman & Lois has landed a surprise pickup for a fourth season to air in the 2023-24 season.
We're surprised because the show was thought to be too expensive for the network's new regime.
If you watch Superman & Lois online, you know the show is VFX-heavy compared to the other shows that have scored pickups for next season.
As a result, there's a good chance Superman & Lois Season 4 will look very different from Superman & Lois Season 3.
For starters, we're getting just ten episodes for the new season, which marks the series' shortest episode order to date.
But still, we're just happy we're getting another season of the show.
It will be unfortunate if many of the show's cast...

The CW’s answered a few lingering questions regarding their 2023-2024 primetime lineup, officially confirming Superman & Lois has been renewed for season four and All American: Homecoming earned a third season order. Both dramas could have gone either way as The CW trims down its roster following its acquisition by Nexstar.

The CW has renewed All American spinoff All American: Homecoming for a third season. As has been the case with most renewals of existing scripted CW series, Homecoming was picked up for 13 episodes.
Overall, four legacy CW dramas made it to next season. All: American was picked up today alongside Superman & Lois, which received a 10-episode Season 4 order. The series, both from Warner Bros. Television and studio-based Berlanti Productions, join previously renewed flagships All American and Walker.

Exclusive: The CW is nearing renewal decisions on the three remaining scripted series in limbo, Superman & Lois, All American: Homecoming and Gotham Knights, sources tell Deadline. Because of the shows’ high price point compared to the lower-license-fees model the network is shifting to in pursuit of profitability, I hear two of the three series — Superman & Lois and All American: Homecoming — would return for another season, joining previously renewed tentpoles All American and Walker. Update 6 Pm: The CW has officially renewed Superman & Lois for a 10-episode fourth season and All American: Homecoming for a 13-episode Season 3.
To make it happen, I hear producing studio Warner Bros. Television made a proposal about a reduced license fee it could make the shows for. While not close to the $1 million an episode the new CW regime had been targeting, I hear it was a significant reduction that could make the series...

Spoiler Alert! This story contains details from the Season 2 finale of The CW‘s All American: Homecoming
The school year has officially come to a close at Bringston University, and, after a season of wavering between two suitors, Simone (Geffri Maya) finally made a decision about her love life during Monday’s Season 2 finale of All American: Homecoming.
Her choice will settle a love triangle that co-showrunners Nkechi Okoro Carroll and Marqui Jackson have been building since the end of Season 1. But audiences will have to wait to find out who Simone actually chooses, because Monday’s episode ends with Simone supposedly professing her love to either Damon (Peyton Alex Smith) or Lando (Martin Bobb-Semple)…but viewers don’t see who it is.
“The love triangle was absolutely built into the season. It’s the reason why we introduced Martin Bobb-Semple as Lando at the end of last season, to...

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from this week’s episode of All American: Homecoming.
The Bringston University women’s tennis team is figuring out how to move forward in Monday’s episode of The CW series All American: Homecoming, after the young women were racially profiled during a police stop on their way to a tennis match.
In last week’s episode, the tennis team’s bus was pulled over under the pretext of an illegal lane change, only for Simone (Geffri Maya) and her teammates were harassed by the officers, who began searching their bags for drugs and weapons, despite no evidence to suggest they would be in possession of either. The story was inspired in part by the experience of the Delaware State University women’s lacrosse team during a traffic stop in Georgia last year.

(Spoiler alert: The following article discusses the entirety of “All American: Homecoming” Season 2, Episode 5, titled “No More Drama.”)
