In late April Marko Kolanovic, a financial analyst for JPMorgan Chase, wrote to clients with good news. Pandemic aside, investors should expect stock prices in S&P 500 companies to return to record numbers some time early next year!
“The S&P 500 should attain previous all-time highs,” Kolanovic wrote, “if the monetary measures are sustained.”

Ten years ago, George W. Bush signed into law the Troubled Asset Relief Program, better known as the Tarp bailout. The rescue forked over $700 billion of taxpayer money to bail out giant Wall Street banks that were already too big, and were about to get bigger.
On Wednesday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-vt) and Rep. Brad Sherman (D-ca) introduced new legislation on Tarp’s anniversary. It is aimed at the central, still-unaddressed issue of the last disaster: the ungovernable size of the country’s biggest banks.

Is there a hit from the past decade more widely imitated than “Homeland”? Perhaps that’s because the spy serial’s action-packed appeal seems easily replicable, even without a character as indelible as Carrie Mathison. Building relatable characters is hard, but ratcheting up tension is easy. Right?
Epix’s new series “Deep State” creates tense situations that don’t quite hit home — because, artfully directed and grimace-inducingly violent as those situations may be, they’re happening to people from whom we feel a strange remove. On “Deep State,” Mark Strong’s Max Easton is called back into the field as an MI6 agent to course-correct a failing mission in the Middle East. In so doing, he’s called away from his bucolic family life in France — including a wife who knows less than she might and who takes it upon herself to learn what her husband’s been up to.

Congress was shocked, just shocked over revelations that the National Security Agency and other intelligence organizations enjoyed sprawling access to reams of data and personal communication, Jon Stewart noted on Wednesday’s edition of “The Daily Show.” Although the political satirist had a little trouble buying the plausibility of their deniability. “The congressmen on the intelligence committee were adamant that they did not know anything about how we gather intelligence,” Stewart said. “They have every right to be outraged and surprised,” he added. “Well not every right. They have no right.” Also read: ‘Daily Show’: Alan Greenspan Explains How He Got Financial Crisis.

Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan slid onto the hot seat on “The Daily Show” Monday night to explain how he and other regulators failed to foresee the economic meltdown. “The simple premise that we all made was that people would act rationally in their long-term self-interest made a huge impact on how you viewed how the economy was going to function,” Greenspan explained to Jon Stewart. Trying to get to the root causes of the crisis — and presumably to rehabilitate an image badly scarred by the near collapse of the financial system — inspired Greenspan to write his new...

Leading U.S. newswoman Andrea Mitchell revealed she's battling breast cancer during her political affairs show on MSNBC on Wednesday.
The network's chief foreign affairs correspondent, who is married to American economist Alan Greenspan, shared the news with viewers, but insisted she has "a terrific prognosis".
The 64 year old said, "(It) was discovered during my annual screening just a short time ago. Lucky for me, I'm one of the fortunate ones. We discovered it in the earliest stage, it has not spread, and I'm already back at work with a terrific prognosis."...

There's a lot of love in Andrea Mitchell's corner right now. NBC News' chief foreign affairs correspondent—and wife of former Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan—revealed on the air today that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. But, happily, her prognosis is "excellent," she said toward the end of the hour on Andrea Mitchell Reports on MSNBC. "I had planned to be hiking in Wyoming last week, but instead discovered that I am now among the 1 in 8 women in this country—incredibly 1 in 8—who have had breast cancer," said Mitchell, 64. The veteran newswoman said her doctor caught the cancer in its earliest stage during her annual...

The election in terms of our pop-culture zeitgeist: Hollywood Re porter reports Leno and Letterman must root for Republicans because the Center for Media and Public Affairs, which apparently has nothing else to do, totaled seven times more Gop jokes than Dem jokes. During Clinton time, O'Reilly and Limbaugh vaulted to power. Over our eight Bush-league years, Jon Stewart, Bill Maher, Colbert and Franken. Presumably, if McCain wins, late-night hosts will have a field day.

I.O.U.S.A.
Featuring Warren Buffet, Ron Paul, and Alan Greenspan
Directed by Patrick Creadon
Rated PG
Knowing that its subject is a little dry and doesn't have a lot of laughs, the filmmakers of I.O.U.S.A. have gone out of their way to make this film about the current economic crisis and its early indicators as accessible as possible.
Why would you want to see a movie that just reinforces the compounding news reports of our grim financial outlook? Does the phrase "those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it" mean anything to you?
This documentary was first shown at the Sundance Film Festival back in January. To those audiences, these concepts must have seemed vaguely foreign. Everybody knows the economy was worse in 2006 and 2007 than it was in 1999, but it hadn't really taken hold the way it has in the past three months.
For a narrative, it follows two campaigners...
