By his own admission, Christiaan Van Vuuren is no political expert.
Despite this, the perspective of the Soul Mates and Bondi Hipsters comedian is central to Big Deal, a two-part ABC factual series examining Australia’s billion-dollar political lobbying industry.
As the presenter of Craig Reucassel’s directorial debut, Van Vuuren sits down with a host of prominent parliamentary and media figures, including Jason Falinski, Sam Dastyari, Scott Ryan, Kate McClymont, Andrew Leigh, Helen Haines, Jacqui Lambie, Katharine Murphy, Linda Burney, and Zali Steggall.
He told If the distance of departure from his previous work was not lost on him.
“It was pretty terrifying,” he said.
“There is an emotional safety when you have control of an edit and you’re in character and it’s comedic.
“This is scarier because you are a bit more out there. It was challenging in that I was talking to people who know...

Ratidzo Mambo.
Last year Ratidzo Mambo figured she wasn’t being offered the type of roles she wanted and so she made a pivotal decision.
The Zimbabwean-born actor and former sales agent and distribution consultant resolved to take her fate into her own hands by becoming a creative producer, developing her own TV and film projects.
“I’ve had to learn how to multi-task because acting jobs are scarce and the types of roles I want to do are seldom offered to me,” Rati tells If via Skype from Bali, where she is finishing the bibles and treatments for a bunch of projects.
“Rather than blame people or live in a space of negativity, I have to take accountability. I have a lot to say and I am a storyteller as well.”

Maddie Dyer and Rachel Griffiths.
After bonding on Ride Like a Girl, Rachel Griffiths and emerging writer-director Madeleine Dyer are jointly developing a TV comedy series based on a prominent Australian actor.
Describing Rachel’s concept as a new age, male version of Eliza Dolittle, Dyer says the plot will follow the actor as he learns to be ‘woke’ in how he relates to women and conducts himself in the current social climate.
They envisage an Extras-style series where actors and celebrities will play versions of themselves and are still in discussions with the actor about his participation.
Dyer spent five months with Griffiths on a Screen Australia-funded director’s attachment and director’s assistant on pre-production and principle shoot of the Michelle Payne biopic starring Teresa Palmer and Sam Neill.
That collaboration prompted Griffiths to laud Dyer as a “sister zeitgeist hunter” during her Hector Crawford memorial lecture at Screen Forever.

Australian production company Jungleboys have signed directing brothers Christiaan and Connor Van Vuuren.
The brothers are best known for producing online hits the Bondi Hipsters and The Fully Sick Rapper which led to them creating the one-hour MTV comedy Sick.

Video sharing site YouTube’s parent company Google has funded the creators of web series Bondi Hipsters to travel to London for the Olympics.
Christiaan van Vuuren and Nick Boshier, did a callout for sponsorship in March seeking support to send them to the UK at the time of the games. They have already acquired Olympic accreditation.
The duo play Bondi hipsters Dom and Adrian and have acquired a growing following on YouTube with their Bondi anthem The Life Organic already topping half a million views.
Google has paid for flights and accommodation for the five-member production team and will help promote episodes of Bondi Hipsters as featured content on the site.
Dave Jansen, managing partner of Infinity Squared, and executive producers of the Olympics series, told Mumbrella: “We had a lot of offers from brands but they weren’t a good fit. The brands wouldn’t have allowed us the creative freedom.
