If you were looking for stars at opening night of the Toronto Film Festival at a time when there aren’t that many available, they were at the world premiere of Gonzo Girl, with four-time Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe and director-star Patricia Arquette receiving a standing ovation Thursday at the Royal Alexandra Theatre.
Arquette was drawn to Cheryl Della Pietra’s novel about author’s tortured yet creative time as Hunter S. Thompson’s assistant because she was a die-hard fan of the gonzo journalist. But it was more than that.
Arquette was also fascinated with the ’90s backdrop, and the notion of one being lost in the celebrity. Also, themes of “what is the commodity of beauty? (It was) a look at the nebulous nature of addiction and co-dependency and how your move through your boundaries,” she said in introducing the film.
“This is theme of my life. Tada!

Review: Refreshing, Respectful 'Wildlike' Starring Bruce Greenwood, Ella Purnell, And Brian Geraghty
“Wildlike” presents a levelheaded, humble, and respectful drama about a controversial subject, wrapped around a road movie that takes full advantage of breathtaking Alaskan wilderness scenery. Even though the story focuses on a teen running away from sexual abuse by a family member, an issue that’s ripe for dramatic sensationalism, it never sinks into excessive melodrama, only to end with unearned pathos to please the general audience with a saccharine emotional release. Writer/director Frank Hall Green shows a considerable amount of restraint and a deft handle on tone for a first feature. He doesn’t really say anything new about the tricky subject he delves into, and doesn’t really show anything new concerning the Alaskan wilderness that films like “Into The Wild” didn’t already cover, but he manages to construct a solid drama that earns every bit of its handful of emotional payoffs. To be honest,...

Read More: Here's How This First-Time Director Got Into 100 Festivals Indiewire's Springboard column profiles up-and-comers in the film industry worthy of your attention. Indie producer-turned-filmmaker Frank Hall Green has had one hell of a film festival run. After premiering his debut feature, Ella Purnell- and Bruce Greenwood-starring "Wildlike" at the Hamptons International Film Festival in October of last year, Hall has gone on to screen his film at over 150 festivals, racking up the awards along the way. It wasn't exactly Hall's plan to have such a prodigious trip around the film festival circuit, but it's one that has paid off in spades: "Wildlike" is now bound for a theatrical and On Demand release with a number of awards already under its belt. The film follows troubled teen Mackenzie (Purnell), who trades one dangerous experience for another when she runs away from her uncle's home in Alaska, bound for her mother's house in Seattle.

She is a tiny little woman, a girl really, her eyes big and scared, she chews nervously on her sleeves, she looks at everyone with suspicion and maybe a bit of hope. She wears way too much eye makeup and her nail polish is always chipped and fading. She looks lost and alone in a waiting area of what may be a train station, airport or bus station. It is a waiting area for a ferry to Juneau, Alaska.
Her Mother is ill and Father deceased. Mother will be entering a hospital in Seattle, Washington, where they live, Mother can’t take care of her anymore. She is being sent to Juneau to stay with an Uncle, (known only as Uncle, played by Brian Geraghty). This is MacKenzie, the fragile but resourceful heroine of Wildlike.
At first her Uncle seems to have been sent from Heaven. She gets her own room in a nice home,...

Wildlike screens at 5:00pm Saturday, November 22nd at the Tivoli Theatre as part of the St. Louis International Film Festival. Ticket information can be found Here
The “fish out of water” story is nothing new. Even in as remote a location as Alaska, there have been numerous films and TV shows going back to at least Northern Exposure (and its predecessor Twin Peaks) that chronicle the effects of living in remote isolation on a person used to the big city. But no project in recent memory has utilized the extreme open spaces and majestic grandeur of the Alaskan outback in such a beautiful way as the new film Wildlike.
