The Roman Catholic Church combats a global rise in demonic possessions by reopening schools to train priests to perform exorcisms. Although nuns are forbidden to perform this ritual, a professor recognizes Sister Ann’s gifts and agrees to train her. Thrust onto the spiritual frontline, she soon finds herself in a battle for the soul of a young girl who’s possessed by the same demon that tormented her own mother years earlier.

We delve into the themes of the movie such as exorcism, and what the actors’ respective research methods were. Meanwhile Byers talks about why the horror genre is such a strong breeding ground for complex female roles, and the effect starring in a horror movie has had on them both as audience members. Navarro also speaks about his experience on 13 Reasons Why and how that has set him in good stead for the remainder of his career, while whether they both believe the horror genre is underrated within the industry.

While North America carves up their pumpkins for Halloween, Dwayne Johnson is still carving up the box office.
Warner Bros.’ “Black Adam” is expected to repeat in the No. 1 spot over a quiet Halloween weekend, beating out Lionsgate’s seasonal horror release “Prey for the Devil.”
The DC Comics entry earned 7.5 million on Friday, marking a 72 fall from its opening day last week. Some rivals expect the Warner Bros. release to earn 24 million in its sophomore weekend.
That figure would mark a substantial 63 drop from last week’s opening of 67 million. Even for a superhero film — a genre that tends to yield front-loaded box office performances — that’s on the heftier side. It’s a good bit steeper than the second weekend tumbles of recent comic book films like “The Batman” (-50) and “Eternals” (-62). Marvel’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and “Thor: Love and Thunder” held...

New Line/DC’s Black Adam ends its first week with 83.4M, which is slightly ahead of what Dwayne Johnson’s Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw did in its first week at 83.1M. That’s impressive considering that this is a deeper universe DC character, and the other was connected to a long-established franchise, not to mention it debuted in the summer. Hobbs & Shaw ended its domestic run at 173.9M. The pic’s second weekend was 36.5M, and currently Black Adam is expected to come in lighter at 27M-30M in weekend two. The anti-hero’s Thursday gross was 3.1M, -8 from Wednesday.

Plot: Demonic possessions are rising, so the Catholic Church has put exorcist training courses on the fast track. But Sister Ann, a nun with a personal history of it, is forbidden to train until that personal history comes back in a dangerous way.
Review:The exorcist sub-genre has always lived in the immense shadow of 1973’s The Exorcist. Like Jaws for shark movies, exorcism is culturally linked to one main entry and has set the bar high on quality and execution. It’s hard not to compare Prey for the Devil to Friedkin’s classic in some way. And though director Daniel Stamm plays within a well-worn toy chest, he still delivers a fun popcorn experience. It may lean more toward the pop aesthetic James Wan ushered in, in terms of jump scares than deep terror, but it’s still a fun time if you go in knowing it’s that type of flick.

Twelve years ago director Daniel Stamm was considered in some quarters as having revivified a subgenre with “The Last Exorcism.” That sleeper hit that was no classic, but it took itself seriously in the right ways, as put across by a good cast including the estimable (and still underused) Ashley Bell. Since 2014’s less successful “13 Sins,” he’s been occupied with episodic TV work. Unsurprisingly, his first feature in eight years marks a return to the general terrain that worked for him before.
“Prey for the Devil” won’t likely spur enthusiasm equal to Stamm’s breakout film, despite the relative novelty value of being built around a female exorcist — something not so unprecedented (at least onscreen) as billed, last year’s Veracruz-set “The Old Ways” being just one other example. Still, even if it falls short of being particularly memorable or scary, this is a decently entertaining possession potboiler.

A tale as old as time; a Catholic church representative must battle their inner demons to save the soul of a possessed child. Prey for the Devil attempts to retell this tired story with the gimmick of an aspiring female exorcist but never manages to pull together a narrative cohesive or scary enough to rise above a patchwork of familiar possession horror tropes.
It’s 2018. Demonic possession cases have become so prevalent that the Catholic Church has created schools with the sole purpose of teaching priests the Rite of Exorcism while nuns act as bedside nurses to the possessed. Sister Ann (Jacqueline Byers) finds herself drawn to the role of exorcist, even sneaking into exclusive male classes taught by Father Quinn (Colin Salmon), to the chagrin of her superior. In the history of occult horror, few films have achieved lasting status, but 2010’s The Last Exorcism was one of them, marking out director Daniel Stamm as one to watch. This film, also known as The Devil’s Light, sees him return to the subject, and although the result isn’t likely to have the same impact, there’s still a lot to admire about this stylish piece of work.
From the outset, it has something of the cool visual flair of a Seventies thriller, though its heroine, Annie (Jacqueline Byers), is a thoroughly modern woman. She is also a nun, and if those two things seem to be at odds, well, that’s partly what makes it interesting. We learn early on that Annie’s mother was schizophrenic but also seems to have been possessed, and that Annie suffered violent abuse in childhood as a result. Her experiences have left her keen to develop.

Most occult horror films featuring exorcism focus on lone priests working unsupported in impoverished neighbourhoods. The experiences they feature are challenging enough, but what about the cases which are referred all the way to the top? Prey For The Devil (aka The Devil's Light), which hits cinemas this week, focuses on an exorcist training college which is the last stop before cases are referred to the Vatican – and practically nobody who goes that far ever recovers. Not only does it raise the stakes in this way, dealing with the big beasts of the demonic world, but it’s unusual in that it focuses on a nun, Annie (Jacqueline Byers), who hopes to follow in the footsteps of Catherine of Siena and become the first woman to conduct an exorcism for over five hundred years.

It seems like the box office is slowly rebounding after a couple slower months, but this weekend, “Black Adam” won’t have much in terms of competition for the top spot, so it will score an easy second weekend at #1 probably with around 28 to 30 million or a little more. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
That doesn’t mean that there aren’t any new movies in wide release. In fact, there’s just one, and that’s Lionsgate’s much-delayed and name-changed horror flick “Prey for the Devil,” an exorcism horror drama directed by Daniel Stamm (“The Last Exorcism”). It stars Jacqueline Byers (“Salvation”) as Sister Ann, a rare female exorcist, who has to deal with a few cases of demonic possession. It also stars Virginia Madsen and Colin Salmon, both of whom have quite a bit of genre experience.

It turns out that Daniel Stamm’s 2010 film The Last Exorcism wasn’t the last after all. Twelve years after the release of the movie that put the German director on the horror map, he is returning to the subgenre for another possession movie. But in some ways, the two films couldn’t be more different. While The Last Exorcism played heavily on the ambiguity of whether the central character was afflicted or faking it, Prey for the Devil cuts right to the chase.
“I love that because in most movies, you have to do the half an hour of doubt, and everybody is sitting there going, ’No, we know we’re in an exorcism movie. It’s probably a demon.’” laughs Stamm. Spoilers: it’s a demon. We’re chatting about what brought him back to the genre, and he explains it comes with expectations which are a blessing and a curse.

Creating the project with his wife, musician Gretchen Lieberum, and children, Iris Serena Estes and Lucas Steel Estes, during the height of Covid-19 lockdown, the filmmaker originally conceived He's Watching as a way to stave off his family's boredom while trapped in their home.

Heading into Lionsgate’s CinemaCon presentation Thursday afternoon, the studio’s Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake was trying to figure out what he wanted to say to the room of exhibitors.
He regaled those at the Caesars Palace Colosseum with a story about how he met up with Cineworld and Regal boss Mooky Greidinger at the confab, when he challenged Drake to distinguish how his studio stands out among the rest.
“I smiled when he said it,” said Drake, then underscoring, “Lionsgate is different. We’re different because we’re the underdog who has to punch above our weight. We have to discover what is new every day. We have to find what’s next. We can compete completely on authentic original storytelling.”
“That’s what launches meaningful, long-lasting brands in the discovery of visionary artists,” Drake said.

Nobody's safe. CBS has cancelled its "Salvation" TV show after two seasons. During the second season, which finished its run on September 17, 2018, the science fiction thriller's ratings dropped significantly, so the cancellation has been expected.
A CBS suspense drama, 'Salvation" stars Santiago Cabrera, Jennifer Finnigan, Charlie Rowe, Jacqueline Byers, Melia Kreiling, Ashley Thomas, and Ian Anthony Dale. The story centers MIT graduate student Liam Cole (Rowe) and tech genius Darius Tanz (Cabrera), who discover that in six months, a huge asteroid will crash into the Earth. In season two, the truth is out. Now that it is no longer a secret, the impeding threat will elicit both the best and worst from humanity.

CBS is parting ways with Salvation.
The network has swung the ax on the summer drama after two low-rated seasons, according to Variety.
It focused on an asteroid that was making its way to Earth, and the two people who were tasked with notifying the government that it was coming.
Salvation Season 1 averaged just 3.5 million viewers and a 0.5 rating in the demo, and the series slipped even further this summer, with Salvation Season 2 averaging just 2.7 million viewers and a 0.3 rating.

With it being the lowest-rated summer series on the big four networks, a cancellation was widely expected, but it's surprising it comes months after the series wrapped its sophomore run.
"#Salvies... sadly we have received news that there won’t be a S3 for #Salvation," reads a statement on the Salvation Writers Twitter handle.
