Yesterday the nominees for the Canadian Screen Awards were announced and Amelia Moses' horror flick Bloodthirsty was nominated in a couple categories. Michele Osis and Lowell were nominated for Original Score. The titular song, Bloodthirsty, written by Evan Bogar, Justin Gray and Lowell, was nominated for Original Song. “The film heavily references 90s classics like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Bram Stoker’s Dracula and so I wanted to reflect that in the music as well,” says Lowell. “I knew the music needed to feel both nostalgic and contemporary at the same time so I did my best to capture the chords and essence of 90s grunge while still maintaining the lyrical intimacy in music currently trending today.” To celebrate the nominations our friends at Raven...

The Canadian filmmaker and actor, best known for his comedic bow in This is the End and as the voice of Hiccup in the How to Train Your Dragon series, has long been committed to bringing Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti’s vicious pages to the big screen, and wrote, directed, produced and stars in the upcoming film.
Random Acts of Violence explores ideas of legitimizing cruelty, the responsibility of the artist, and what makes a monster in society. Masterfully lensed by award-winning cinematographer Karim Hussain (Hobo With a Shotgun), the film holds a ferocious mirror up to art, society, and violence; and features a knock-out cast, iconic kills, and a pulsating score from celebrated punk all-star Wade MacNeil and...

Art imitation life of life imitating art? That's the question at the centre of writer/director Jay Baruchel's latest project Random Acts of Violence.
Adapted from Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti's comic book of the same title, Random Acts of Violence stars Jesse Williams as Todd and Baruchel as Ezra, the creators of "Slasherman," a hugely popular horror comic. The pair are working on their latest volume but Todd is experiencing writer's block so as a way to get the creative juices flowing, the pair, along with their girlfriends, head out on a road trip in search of inspiration but during the trip, they start to notice that their books might be inspiring murder and chaos.
The movie also stars Jordana Brewster and Niamh...

Update (6/18): Police officer Devin Brosnan’s lawyer, Don Samuel, has told Rolling Stone that Brosnan does not plan to become a state’s witness in the killing of Rayshard Brooks, despite what Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard said during Wednesday’s press conference.
“The decision to initiate charges by the Fulton County Da’s office is irrational and obviously based on factors that should have nothing to do with the proper administration of justice,” Samuel said in a statement. “Shame on the District Attorney for this abuse of his charging power.

Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death! This month, we’re talking to Josh Alvarez, who you might know from the Cinepunx podcast (which he co-hosts with former Lsbtd guest Liam O’Donnell) and as the frontman for the Philly-area punk band Crossed Keys. Alvarez brings intelligence and thoughtfulness to both his film analysis and his music, so I suppose it’s no surprise that his choice for this month’s film is equally intelligent and thoughtful, Kim Jee-woon’s 2003 ghost story A Tale of Two Sisters.
Based loosely on a Korean fairy tale, A Tale of Two Sisters follows Su-mi (Im Soo-jung), a young girl returning home after being released from a mental institution. As she tries to re-acclimate to life outside of the institution, she has trouble coming to terms with her father, Moo-hyeon (Kim Kap-soo), and domineering stepmother, Eun-joo (Yum Jung-ah), who had previously been an...

President Trump was scheduled to give the annual State of the Union address on January 29th. That’s no longer happening.
As the government continues to operate under a partial shutdown, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-ca) on Wednesday uninvited the president from delivering the address. Pelosi wrote that expending government resources to ensure the event’s security would be inappropriate considering that both the Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security are currently without funding. “Sadly, given the security concerns and unless the government re-opens this week, I suggest...

One of the things I've been hoping to do with the Geek Beat for some time is to use it to interview the hardworking men and women of the geek world ... because come on, who wants to listen to me blather solo until the end of time? Wouldn't it be cool to hear from people actually creating the things I rant about? Yeah, I thought so too.
Finally, the stars aligned, and I managed to connect with someone whose work I've admired for some time: Justin Gray. You know Gray from his solo work on Legends of the Dark Knight, Ma Fantastic Four, and numerous titles with Moonstone Books. You also know him from his work with Jimmy Palmiotti, as they've been behind such cool titles as Jonah Hex, Heroes For Hire, Friday the 13th, 21 Down, and Hawkman, plus the Ghost Rider and Punisher video games. Check out their official site for more info,...
