Highlights magazine is a juvenile right of passage. Everyone flipped through it when they were kids, whether at home or in a doctor’s office, pondering whether they were more of a Goofus or a Gallant. Now, Highlights has inspired a documentary, 44 Pages: Creating Highlights Magazine, which just premiered at SXSW. The film, which was directed by Tony Shaff and produced by Rebecca Green and Laura Smith, follows the creation of the 70th anniversary edition of Highlights, with all its hidden picture puzzles and little life lessons. A.V. Club readers can check out an exclusive clip from the film above, featuring Highlights shout-outs from shows like Parks And Recreation, Arrested Development, and Black-ish. It’s a good reminder that, as the most popular children’s magazine in the world, Highlights helped shape a good portion of us modern day pop-culture nerds, whether we’re all that aware of ...

Crawley nightclub Jj Whispers are letting Channel 4 cameras into the toilets to film a new documentary about what happens in the loos on an ordinary evening in a British club.
Firecracker Films are producing the one-off show for Channel 4, which is hoping to replicate the success of recent documentary hit The Fried Chicken Shop.
Producer Laura Smith told local Crawley press: "A lot goes on in nightclub toilets and this documentary will answer the questions bugging both sexes.
"Apart from the usual gossiping, I've broken up with a boyfriend in a club toilet before, consoled people and seen people get thrown out.
"When it comes to the men, I hear they never talk to each other and don't even stop to wash their hands.
"Take away the craziness of the scenario and we are sure to get some really nice moments and capture a lot of relationships."

A new study out of Cornell produces bigger results than any food revolution or food-policy change could hope for.
Lately, Jamie Oliver's become a saint in his quest to change our attitudes towards food. And the White House and Michelle Obama have been flogging the idea of local produce, while making noise about changes in food policy, which gives woefully sums to big corn and red-meat farmers and contributes to making us fat.
But what if getting kids to eat more veggies is simpler than that? Like, waaaaaay simpler?
Laura Smith, a researcher at the Cornell Food and Brand Lab, has discovered that simply changing the placement of a middle school's salad bar can cause a spike in veggie consumption.
What would your guess be on that spike? 15% 25%? 50%?
Try 250-300%. That's not a typo.
Smith basically discovered what Sizzler's known for decades. Instead of relegating the salad bar to the wall,...
