Submerging their true impulses can surely lead anyone to eventually become unhinged. In honor of the drama being exhibited and presented to potential distributors by Devilworks in […]

Some of the greatest monsters lay in wait, within suburbia. This is the basic premise for Adam Cushman's Restraint. Recently, this film had a showing at the Buffalo International Film Festival. It has also appeared at the Rhode Island International Film Festival. Inside Restraint, a woman becomes catatonic, first. Then, she turns violent in her family home. Restraint stars: Dana Ashbrook, John Hensley and Geoffrey Rivas. The film's latest trailer is hosted here. The trailer takes awhile to build tension. But, the clip offers an unsettling film score, courtesy of Icelandic composer Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson. It also shows some of the film's more violent sequences, with one character dragged off-screen. Never judge a book by its cover as Angela (Caitlyn Folley) slowly becomes unhinged. A release date, for Restraint, has not been announced. However, the film continues a film festival run, throughout 2017. More festival dates will be announced shortly.

Nightmare Code is a psychological sci-fi thriller about behaviour recognition technology and 24/7 surveillance. Brett Desmond, a genius programmer with a troubled past, is called in to finish a top-secret behaviour recognition program, Roper, after the previous Lead Programmer went insane. But the deeper Brett delves into the code, the more his own behaviour begins changing… in increasingly terrifying ways. Suspense builds with surveillance, PC, and eyeglass cameras – often with four images onscreen at once… as if Roper itself is telling the story.

The director of Candyman (1992), Bernard Rose, returns to horror with SX_Tape, aka Sxtape. This found footage styled feature involves terror in an abandoned hospital. Ciatlyn Folley and Julie Marcus star in this indie film, which will debut on home video formats July 15th, 2014. A preview for the release is here. Sex games turn to horror when one couple finds hauntings in and old building. Here, a possible artshow turns terribly wrong when Jill (Folley) finds herself tormented by an ancient evil. Now, the sex games are on hold and this artshow will be displayed in blood. Early reviews for SX_Tape have not been kind. Most critics have mentioned the film's use of cliches. But, some indie horror fans might find something of value here. A trailer and list of special features for the release are hosted below. Release Date: July 15th, 2014 (DVD, Blu-ray). Director: Bernard Rose. Writer: Eric Reese.

Just as quickly as Afflicted redefined the “found footage” horror subgenre, SX_Tape came along and proved there are still Plenty of opportunities for filmmakers to exploit first-person horror normalities. One day there’s a bright hope, the next there’s a disgusting reminder that for every original idea, someone else will rehash the past few years of duds for their own ill-conceived shitfest. I want to remain positive, happily accepting an advancement in “found footage” horror – but it takes a certain type of awful to make me hate a movie in which our lead, possessed character jumps up and down screaming “Let Me Suck Your Dick!” To think some inexperienced filmmaker could just waltz into stardom with such a – wait, this was directed by Bernard Rose of Candyman fame? Oh boy, where’s Tony Todd when you need him?

Having made a name for himself with the memorable horror flick Candyman back in 1992, British director Bernard Rose has since tried his hand in various other genres – with the more recent unofficial trilogy of adapted Leo Tolstoy novels, culminating in the wonderfully pensive drama Boxing Day last year, proving a distinct aptitude to excel in other areas. However he now makes a long-awaited move back to horror with his latest picture Sx_Tape – though regrettably, it’s a rather dire return.
We begin with mortified artist Jill (Caitlyn Folley) being interviewed by the police, as she is informed she is the only survivor of a dark and disturbing supernatural occurrence, following her daring break-in at a local, abandoned hospital with her boyfriend Adam (Ian Duncan). Though she seems to be somewhat oblivious to what exactly happened on this fateful day, fortunately Adam documented the entire day on his handheld camera...

Chicago – “The Fp,” playing in midnight shows this weekend at Music Box and in various arthouse theaters around the country, is a hard movie to put your finger on. Is it just bad like “Birdemic” or “The Room” or is it something “trying” to be bad? Is it a spoof of bad movies or just a bad movie? Does it matter? Either way, “The Fp” works for its audience, a rowdy crowd of midnight movie fans willing to put up with over-the-top silliness, bad performances, and general lunacy. It’s essentially an extended short film that doesn’t even justify its short running time but audiences on its wavelength will eat it up.
One has to give the team behind “The Fp” major credit for sticking to their ridiculous vision from first frame to last. Their movie is totally goofy and I don’t mean that as insulting as it may sound.

A film that feels cobbled together from a "Dance Dance Revolution" arcade machine, that graffiti-covered white room where Will Smith shot music videos during his 'Fresh Prince' days and the desperate need to create a new pop culture catchphrase, “The Fp” is a singular pastiche of hip-hop nostalgia, smalltown escapism and dystopian absurdity. But the raw materials from which brothers Brandon and Jason Trost assemble their first feature are so specific that the end result may have trouble appealing to a wider audience, especially if viewers aren’t willing to embed their tongue so deeply in their cheek that they practically choke on it. A fun and ambitious if over-the-top and overlong comedy about a world where gangs work out their differences via dance fights to the death, “The Fp” is one of the most unique films made in years, but that novelty value also often makes it more of...

The Fp
Directed by Brandon & Jason Trost
Screenplay by Brandon Trosh
2011, USA
A completely straight-faced parody/tribute with an amalgam of pop-culture signifiers, boasting the slogan “Shit’s tough in the Fp,” this certifiably offbeat campfest takes aim at many different targets -video game culture, inner city gangs, Hip Hop slang, ravers, techno music and even underdog sports films.
The film opens with an early-80′s-style scroll and narration to set the tone: a vaguely post-apocalyptic near future (or alternate universe), where gangs compete for street cred by battling each other with a bastardized version of Dance Dance Revolution not-too-subtly called Beat Beat Revolution. For years an underground war has raged for dominance over the small town of Frazier Park between two clans: The 248 from the north and the 245 from the south. When Jtro (Jason Trost) loses his brother Btro (Brandon Barrera) in a Beat Beat Revolution match, he swears...

"Hey L Dubba E, I challenge you to a beat off!" Today's indie trailer is a red band for a film called The Fp, directed by the Trost Brothers being distributed by Drafthouse Films. It's essentially The Warriors meets Dance Dance Revolution, the video game, in some crazy dark comedy mayhem. Director Jason Trost also stars as Jtro with Lee Valmassy as L Dubba E, Art Hsu, Caitlyn Folley, Nick Principe and Brandon Barrera as Btro. This actually looks surprisingly good, like a great cult classic in the making. There's a lot of good humor in it. Though I do think this trailer shows pretty much everything up until the end, maybe too much. Watch the new official red band trailer for the Trost Brothers' The Fp, via YouTube: In a dystopian future, a relentless turf war rages. The two reactions I’ve heard to The Fp have either been in the territory of “it’s a lot of fun” or “it’s completely unwatchable.” Appropriate, then, that my reaction to the red band trailer, from IGN (via AICN), shifted between “this looks kind of entertaining” to “oh, you have got to be kidding me.” (Not in a positive sense.)
So while I could find merit in certain parts that are being sold here — the cinematography and gritty production design, primarily — something about the pitch and tone of everything else is just… grating. I’d love to be wrong here; something that can successfully create an over-the-top sensibility appeals to and entertains me on a very base level. But if it’s anything like this preview, The Fp will have already lost me.

Three posters for three very different movies were all premiered on the world wide web today, and instead of going about my usual opening banter, let’s get right to them.
First up, we bring you the official poster for The Fp courtesy of Movies.com. The movie premiered at last year’s South by Southwest to good reviews (including my own, wink) and Drafthouse Films, the distribution arm of movie chain Alamo Drafthouse, quickly picked it up. On top of that, BadassDigest (also associated with the Drafthouse) also reported the official release date, which has been set for March 16th. It will only be limited, however; for a complete list of theaters head over to Badass Digest, and see the poster below:

I was going to write an article about the news Matthew Vaughn is going to direct the sequel to X-Men: First Class, but quite frankly I don't care. All that means is that Vaughn won't be directing something more interesting. So... yeah... Whatever. However, a new press release landed in my inbox that I was originally going to ignore until I saw Vince over at Film Drunk slathering it with all the inappropriate words I've come to expect and admire him for. The film is The Fp and it was just picked up for distribution by Drafthouse Films who will also be bringing you the excellent Foreign Language nominee Bullhead in just over two weeks on February 17. The Fp is short for Frazier Park from which co-directors and brothers Jason and Brandon Trost originate and Vince describes it as "probably the best quasi-dystopian hero's journey set in the world of...

Frazier Park, mothafuckas! Long have I been lamenting the making-a-bad-movie-on-purpose subgenre as of late, because I think if filmmakers try and stick to the joke throughout, they can make a damn fun movie. And if ever there were an example of that, it's the Trost Bros. The Fp. This thing looks like it was shot for the lint-dusted pocket change sitting in a bedside jar and three handjobs to be delivered later. The concept is absolutely donkeyballs ludicrious: underground street gangs roam the countryside of rural California settling their disputes with showdowns on the Beat-Beat Revolution dance machine. The entire thing is steeped in a late eighties veneer with characters spouting an exaggerated hip-hop patois -- calling each other "nig" and "bitch" and requesting someone "check a look" at things. With a lily-white cast -- save for the remarkable lone Asian -- it's a fucking risk. And it pays off.

SXSW has introduced us to some cool films for the upcoming year and the SXFantastic midnight series gave us a few surprises as well, one being Brandon Trost and Jason Trost's The Fp which is a weird combo of Dance, Dance Revolution meets Class of Nukem High. Actor Nick Principe (Chromeskull:Laid to Rest 2) shared this trailer on his Facebook page over the weekend and you just have to watch it. This movie is so over the top it'll be a smash for sure among the gamers and even bringing in a new audience.
The film stars Jason Trost, Lee Valamassy, Caitlyn Folley, Art Hsu, Nick Principe and Clifton Collins, Jr. and is just crazy enough and over the top to be a hit!

Who’S It For? The Trost brothers described the perfect audience as people who want to enjoy making fun of a Bruckheimer film. I would agree, as long as you lower your expectations.
Overall
Welcome to The Fp. Also known as Frazier Park. Two rival gangs have been fighting for supremacy for years. Everything attempts to be over the top with the flick, including the way they fight … Beat-Beat Revelation. They play it straight and that’s the joke. Unlike films such as Shooter, where the joke is clearly on them.

Last night's screening of SXFantastic selection "The Fp" at the Alamo Ritz began -- as apparently all screenings of "The Fp" begin -- with a ceremonial Four Loko chug race: Crew members, including the brotherly directing team of Brandon and Jason Trost, versus audience members. It was a goofy mood-setter, and maybe a bit of a warning: to fully appreciate their movie you might need to be drunk and high.
"The Fp" stands for Frazier Park, the area of California where the Brothers Trost hail from and which, if "The Fp" is to believed, is perhaps the white trashiest place on earth. In the Trosts' demented vision the Fp is a post-apocalyptic wasteland where rival gangs from "The 245" and "The 248" battle for control of the area's alcohol by playing Dance Dance Revolution. Whoever controls the booze controls the hobos, and whoever controls the hobos can keep the ducks in the park fed.

The film program at South By Southwest (SXSW) has really come into its own over the past few years -- SXSW is becoming an impressive little film fest in addition to being a massive music party. The lineups for Midnight features and shorts have been announced, and there are some good premieres in there. Attack the Block, from Joe Cornish, will have a world premiere, while Hobo With a Shotgun and James Wan's Insidious will show up as well. And the films that most of us haven't heard of sound pretty great, too. If I was at the fest I'd have my ass planted in a seat for every one of these at midnight. Screw the parties -- the crazy genre films are the way to go. The fill list of features is after the break. The shorts program is massive, and you can find it at the SXSW website [1].
