"They have a very cinematic approach to anime. They don't want to anything that is generic or cliched, and that's how I feel about my art as well." Netflix's new anime series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is already available to watch streaming. For one final promotion, Netflix has unveiled a 10 minute behind-the-scenes video taking us to Japan where the animation studio Science Saru is located. Based on the comic books by Canadian creator Bryan Lee O'Malley, the anime is inspired by Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs the World movie but is directly pulled from the comics themselves. They explain this video that the voice cast recorded first, then they animated the series with the voices already in place - the opposite of what usually happens in Japan. This anime series is also quite diverse - it's showrun by Canadian Bryan Lee O'Malley and American BenDavid Grabinski, directed by Spanish animation director Abel Gongora,...

Keanu Reeves has been at the forefront of some of cinema's most important franchises, including "The Matrix" and "John Wick." Even one of his biggest bombs has, against all odds, also become a franchise. Reeves starred in Universal's tremendously expensive blockbuster "47 Ronin" back in 2013. It was a major flop at the time and actually hurt the actor's career a bit. But nearly a full decade later, everything came full circle, and a sequel to that flop was released. Yes, was! As in, it already came out ... last year.
"Blade of the 47 Ronin" is a sequel to the movie in question, and debuted in 2022. One would be forgiven for not realizing it, as it wasn't quite as big as the original, to put it mildly. Unfortunately, Reeves didn't return for the follow-up, but for those who enjoyed that film, there is a sequel out there you can watch right now.

Thanks to Japan’s Yurei, a rich culture of art concerning the supernatural, specifically horror elements, the anime and manga scene has been chock-full of good horror content since the very beginning of the genre. The artistic freedom that manga allows the creators to work with makes its presence felt in a unique way through sci-fi and horror works. From that aspect, the zombie horror subgenre, which was once more popular in the Western landscape, is gradually gaining its foothold in manga as well. If the recently released live-action adaptation of Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead is any indication, mangakas have already created unique narrative structures to interpret the zombie subgenre in various ways.
Zom 100 delves into the delineation of human existence in contemporary Japan, questioning the scope life provides even in the midst of the zombie apocalypse by taking the characters through a journey in a changed world.
