Some 3.4 billion people — almost half of the world’s 7.6B population — is expected to watch the FIFA World Cup that starts Thursday, as the soccer tournament, which takes place this year in Russia, remains one of the world’s most popular media events.
Latin America is expected to have the largest number of viewers, according to research company GlobalWebIndex, followed by the Middle East and Africa, Asia Pacific and Europe. However, thanks to an embarrassing defeat against Trinidad & Tobago, the U.S. won’t be competing in the World Cup for the first time since 1986, a major blow to one of the largest TV markets in the world (albeit one hamstrung by time differences this time around). It’s thought that less than a quarter of the population in the U.S. will tune in to watch any games, and those may be largely expats and those cheering on the Mexican team.

Gary Lineker is reportedly having serious discussions with BT Sport over a potential deal.
The pay-tv channel is thought to be negotiating a contract with the BBC presenter, in which he would host its Champions League coverage next season, Broadcast reports.
However, any possible deal would likely see Lineker remain a key presenter at the BBC.
BBC insiders have stated that the corporation is prepared to be flexible about his contract, which is thought to expire in spring 2016. His current contract states that he can only present sport on UK television for the BBC, but this could be renegotiated.
The report comes weeks after ITV was said to be interested in securing Premier League highlights rights from the BBC, after they become available from the 2015/16 season.
Lineker has previously presented the Champions League for Al Jazeera, and currently hosts Premier League coverage for American network NBC.

Gary Lineker, Clare Balding and Gabby Logan have been announced as joint presenters of the 2013 BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards, as Sue Barker steps down from the hosting job after 19 years.
Barker remains as a member of the judging panel and will play a major role in this year's 60th anniversary show.
Barker said: "It has been an honour to present BBC Sports Personality of the Year for the last 19 years and I have loved every minute of it.

Mark Chapman has become one of the BBC's leading sports broadcasters over the past few years. From his days with Scott Mills on Radio 1 to his work on 5 Live, Chapman has shown his extensive sports knowledge on a variety of different projects.
From the 2013/14 football season, Chapman will take over from Colin Murray as main host of the BBC's Match of the Day 2, while continuing to host 5 Live Sport on Saturdays and fronting the Rugby World Cup coverage.

Your appointment as regular host of Match of the Day 2 has arrived at an exciting time. What are you looking forward to covering most for the upcoming season?
