“Survivor” debuted on CBS as a summer program on May 31, 2000. Hosted by Jeff Probst since the very beginning, it is credited by many as starting the reality show craze that has been a major part of TV this century. After being on the air for two decades, 20 of the most iconic champions returned in Season 40’s “Winners at War” to compete in the first-ever all-winners season. Following a temporary delay due to Covid-19, the reality TV show continued with even more twists and turns, plus more diversity amongst its cast members. Tour our updated “Survivor” winners list above (or click here for direct access) that highlights everyone from Season 1’s Richard Hatch to the most recent.

The “Survivor 46” finale proved to be the end of the road for one of the messiest and most unpredictable seasons in recent memory. At the start of the night, five people still remained on the island: three from the original Siga tribe, one from the original Yanu tribe (Kenzie Petty), and one from the original Nami tribe (Liz Wilcox). So which castaway ended up a millionaire by the end of the three-hour episode?

Outwit, outplay, outlast. The basic formula for competing on “Survivor” hasn’t changed since the reality series made its debut on May 31, 2000. Contestants continue to be divided into tribes and forced to form a new society as they adapt to their physical and social surroundings. Players still have to compete in challenges, build their social game and face the elements and hear host Jeff Probst yell his signature phrases like “You gotta dig deep!” and “Wanna know what you’re playing for?” — and they still have to look into his eyes while he utters the dreaded phrase “The tribe has spoken.”
While the essential gameplay of “Survivor” hasn’t changed throughout 44 seasons played over 23 years, the game certainly has evolved. A myriad of new twists and advantages, the 39-day format shortened to 26 days, and the evolution of the contestants themselves have led to the long-running series having...

Over the course of its 44 seasons, “Survivor” has hosted hundreds of immunity challenges where individual players could win the opportunity to save themselves from elimination at tribal council. Since 2000 when the reality TV show began, 15 different contestants have won at least four immunity challenges. However, five of those castaways prevailed five times, a record that has never been broken. In our “Survivor” gallery above, we spotlight those with the most immunity wins in a single season.
Despite four others winning just as many as he did, Colby Donaldson from Season 2 has bragging rights as not only the first player to win five times, but also the only one to do so consecutively. Like Kelly Wiglesworth before him, Colby played the game at a point in time where challenge wins were not held as in high regard as they were later, leaving him in runner-up position to a more social game-focused player in the final vote.

“Survivor” is a game that ends with one person claiming the life-changing $1 million prize, but sometimes the winner is not the one people expect. The title of Sole Survivor is the result of taking out the biggest competitors, being likable in the cast, and appealing to the jury, all while arguing the case of why you’re the most deserving of the win. While many of the champions are well-deserved, at least according to the passionate fans at home, others spark massive debate when Jeff Probst reads their names out loud. Scroll through our photo gallery above (or click here for direct access) where we detail the Top 10 biggest “Survivor” upset winners of all time.

Survivor is not an easy game. Producers dump castaways on a deserted beach with minimal resources and force them to compete in brutal physical challenges. They are starving, suffering from bug bites and other ailments, and are subject to harsh weather conditions. So it doesn’t come as a surprise that numerous players have quit over the show’s 44 seasons. But do the Survivor contestants still get paid if they forfeit their spot in the game?

Every Survivor fan knows that the Sole Survivor gets paid $1 million (before taxes) for winning their season. But what the CBS reality competition series doesn’t disclose on air is that producers pay the other contestants just for being on the show.
CinemaBlend reports that the first boot receives $3,500, and the total rises as the placement increases.

At the start of “Survivor 43” it was looking like series history would be made if they had become the first season to vote five women out in a row. Thankfully they dodged setting what would have been an unfortunate record, but sadly “Survivor 44” is already in the same position. Setting aside the medevac of Bruce Perreault on Day 1, four women have once again been the first four voted out of a “Survivor” game. If the players extend it to a fifth next week, they will make history as the first and only cast to eliminate five women out in a row.
As things stand, the game will remain in the three tribe format for at least one more episode. Ratu voted Maddy Pomilla out first, Tika is responsible for sending home both Helen Li and Sarah Wade, and Soka ousted Claire Rafson after she sat her out for three straight immunity challenges.

Netflix recently added Survivor Season 32 to its streaming library, introducing a new group of people to the Brains vs. Brawn vs. Beauty cast, including the season’s winner Michele Fitzgerald. Michele is a bit of a controversial figure in the Survivor community. But despite the pushback she received after the season 32 finale aired, Michele has continuously proved why she deserved to win in the years following her first television appearance.

Survivor is one of those shows that is made great by the character of the players and the work of the editors.
A jury of booted players always chooses the winner, but sometimes the winner is a surprise even to production.
It's up to the editors to craft a satisfying narrative based on the footage they have but still make sure the outcome isn't too obvious. Thirty-nine days (or 26 in the last three seasons) yields a lot of material, so you'd think they'd always have enough to go on.
Not always. Sometimes, making the winner appear deserving seems impossible, so the players' relationships and strategies are embellished or tossed aside in favor of an entertaining throughline. It hasn't always worked.
Warning: This article contains spoilers for many seasons of Survivor.

The castaways of “Survivor 43” have positioned themselves to set a new record next week — all they need to do is vote out a fifth woman in a row. So far the cast has only eliminated females: Morriah Young, Justine Brennan, Nneka Ejere and Lindsay Carmine were the first four players voted out, matching a franchise record. If they continue on this path and vote another woman out next week, they will go down in infamy as the record holders for longest succession of female eliminations to start a season. Yikes!
Luckily, as it stands in Gold Derby’s racetrack odds, the cast is not headed toward setting such a disastrous record. Instead, Geo Bustamante leads our current predictions to be eliminated in Episode 5 at 19/25. He is followed, however, by four women with decent odds to go: Cassidy Clark at 6/1 and Jeanine Zheng, Elisabeth ‘Elie’ Scott and Noelle Lambert all at...

Tori Meehan makes ‘Survivor’ history by winning first 2 individual immunity challenges of the season
Over the course of the first 21 years and 41 seasons of “Survivor,” only one woman had won the first two individual immunity challenges of her season: Laura Morett in 2009’s “Survivor: Samoa.” Now, her long-standing record has been tied by Tori Meehan, who just claimed back-to-back victories in the first two individual immunity challenges of “Survivor 42.” Talk about girl power!
One caveat in mentioning this record is that Laura’s initial immunity win was actually awarded to the best performing male (John Fincher) and female (Laura) of that specific challenge. Tori didn’t have to share either of her two immunity necklaces, which puts her truly in a league of her own when it comes to making “Survivor” history.

Over the past 40 seasons of “Survivor,” men have won 25 times while women have only prevailed 15 times. (See the “Survivor” winners list.) The past six cycles in a row have all resulted in male champions, with the most recent woman winner being Sarah Lacina in Season 34. With the Season 41 finale set for Wednesday night, all eyes are on whether one of the last two females on the island (Erika Casupanan or Heather Aldret) can break the curse this year. Or will one of the three men prevail instead?

“I’ve never been more ready to come back and kick some ass,” Jenna Morasca recently told EW.com about whether she’d ever want to play “Survivor” again. This winner of Season 6 (“The Amazon”) is still the youngest woman to ever take home the $1 million check — she was just 21 when the show aired in 2003. But she hasn’t played since Season 8 (“All Stars”) in 2004, a whopping 17 years ago now. The most recent 40th cycle (“Winners at War”) invited back 20 former champions to play again, but Morasca, who admitted she’s “older now,” wasn’t one of them. Do you hope this forgotten winner returns for a future season of “Survivor” so newer fans can see her in action? Sound off down in the comment section.

“Survivor: Winners at War” may purport to decide the best winner of all time, but 18 former champions could plausibly dispute that. While Season 40 does have “Survivor” legends like Rob Mariano, Parvati Shallow and Sandra Diaz-Twine, it does not include every past winner. For instance, the first two winners, Richard Hatch and Tina Wesson, are missing from the “Winners at War” cast despite being from two of the most-watched seasons in the show’s history. “Survivor” fans, there is good news and bad news when it comes to the upcoming 40th season, “Winners at War.” The good? If your favorite former players are voted out of the game there’s still a chance they can win. The bad? That’s because (spoiler alert!) the Edge of Extinction is back in play.
This controversial twist first popped up in Season 38 when memorable castaway Reem Daly became the first player voted out. Upon walking out of tribal council she was presented with a decision: stay in the game by boating to Extinction Island, or end her experience right then and there? As it turns out every castaway chose the boat option, though two — Keith Sowell and Wendy Diaz — quit not long after they arrived on the deserted island.

Morasca, who won Survivor: The Amazon — the sixth season of the CBS competitive reality TV series in 2003 — was found unconscious by police officers in a Chevrolet SUV that was running and parked at a stop sign in Washington, Pennsylvania, on Jan. 25, E! News reports. The reality star was with a female passenger, whom officers reportedly saw placing a bag of syringes into her purse.
Officers administered Morasca, 37, with Narcan — a safe antidote to opioid overdoses — which she was revived with.

It’s the shock of seeing Norman Bates, knife in hand, clad in his mother’s clothes, grinning maniacally in the swinging lamplight. It’s the realization that Kevin Spacey spun us a bunch of lies, and was actually Keyser Söze the whole time. It’s finally connecting “I see dead people” with Bruce Willis being shot at the beginning of “The Sixth Sense.” When movies pull the rug from under us, it’s one of the greatest thrills that cinema can provide.
As Hollywood continues to reboot countless old properties, it’s easy to think that the days of original and surprising storytelling are long behind us. But these films prove that Hollywood still has a few tricks up its sleeve, ones that have kept us talking for years, and have cemented their place in film history.

In HitFix's new feature "Waxing Episodic," we reflect on an episode of television we'll never forget. On May 31, 2000, I watched the premiere of "Survivor." I was edgy. At that point, the "Survivor" audience was just me and 15.5 million of my fellow early adapters. The next week, the "Survivor" audience went to 18 million and then to 23.25 million. Before "Empire" made our minds boggle at the mere idea of a show actually gaining viewers each week, there was "Survivor," which started with a 6.1 rating among adults 18-49 and was at a 12.7 rating by its penultimate installment. [I actually missed that first finale, which averaged nearly 52 million viewers, because I was in the process of moving to Los Angeles. Nobody tell me who won!] Last week's 15th anniversary marked a good time to dust off my "Survivor" (or "Survivor: Borneo" or "Survivor: Pulau Tiga") DVDs and our frequent -- when we happen to have the time -- "Waxing Episodic" feature was a perfect time to reflect on how the game has changed and how it remains the same. I contemplated...

The results of a CBS.com poll of "Survivor" fans are now on newsstands, as part of a special commemorative issue of CBS Watch! magazine. The 100-page, full-color magazine is a pretty great overview of the series, except for the absolute wrongness of its polls. That's especially true for its "all time best seasons" poll. Yes, ranking "Survivor" seasons is about as difficult as stacking cooked spaghetti noodles, and about as useful. It's mostly good for creating disagreement. What one viewer values, another dismisses--but that's one of the many reasons why the series has survived for 30 seasons. There's a lot to argue about. Even looking at objective data about Survivor winners and cast members can prompt discussion. So, here are the results of CBS' poll, and one fan's thoughts and arguments about why the other fans' collective wisdom often seems screwed up. #1: Survivor Heroes vs. Villains, season 20, 2010 Why this...

When thinking of outrageous in terms of pro wrestling and Tna in particular many different images are conjured up. Everything from a grown man dressed as a shark to barbed wire massacres and reverse battle royales, the list goes on and on.
Now, that’s not a knock on Tna as a company but they have definitely had their share of ups and downs. From their days of the X Division consistently putting on some of the best matches in wrestling at the time and Samoa Joe’s seemingly untouchable undefeated streak all the way down the ladder to the infamous tragedy that Tna advertised as a “match” involving Jenna Morasca and Sharmell.
Tna has a history of being willing to tip toe the line all in the name of ratings (sound familiar?). At the same time they have definitely been there and tried that when it comes to gimmicks.

While the second "Blood vs. Water" cast for "Survivor" doesn't feature any returning castaways, that doesn't mean that the group is devoid of familiar faces. CBS announced the new "Survivor" cast on Wednesday (August 27) morning and, to put it politely, notoriety abounds. For sports fans, the biggest name in the "Survivor" cast is likely to be John Rocker. The complimentary interpretation of Rocker's career is that he had one wildly successful year as closer for the Atlanta Braves, saving 38 games in 1999 to finish fourth in the league, while striking out 104 batters in only 72 innings. Of course, the next year Rocker was demoted to the minors after threatening a Sports Illustrated reporter who wrote a 1999 piece in which Rocker went on a lengthy homophobic, xenophobic and racist rant that involved New Yorkers as well as former teammates. Rocker has continued to be controversial in the years since his baseball career melted down,...

Spoiler Alert! Who shot J.R? It was his sister-in-law and mistress Kristin Shepard. That may sound a bit ridiculous to offer a spoiler alert for something that aired 34 years ago, but consider that someone once sent an angry letter to EW after I offhandedly mentioned the identity of Rosebud from 1941’s Citizen Kane, a “mistake” I do not plan to make again here. But all of this begs the question: When does a spoiler cease to be a spoiler? And whose responsibility is it to prevent the dissemination of information after it has already been made public: the person that has already watched it,...

Modern Family definitely has a gay agenda coming up, but it’s not what you think! We all know that Cameron and Mitchell are preparing for their big wedding day on the ABC sitcom, but before they can make it to the altar, there needs to be a wild and crazy Las Vegas bachelor party! However, as Eric Stonestreet told us when he stopped by Entertainment Weekly Radio (SiriusXM, channel 105), it won’t be Cam & Mitchell’s bachelor party. “We just shot an episode that was kind of an anti-bachelor party episode in Vegas,” says the man who plays Cam.

"Survivor: Blood vs. Water" had a crazy thing happen last episode -- the Tribal Council, fueled by Hayden's last-ditch effort to sway Ciera's vote and save himself, went all the way to a drawing of rocks after two tie votes. Our castaways are being fairly dominated by Tyson's game on "Survivor: Blood vs. Water," with Ciera even going along with a vote to oust her mother. Can anyone topple Tyson?
Post-Vote
Everyone at Kasama is acting so somber, like Ciera just sentenced her mom to death or something. At Redemption, Laura M is saying how tough it was -- Vytas and Tina are surprised Ciera did it. C'mon guys, it's not that serious.

Jeff starts things off by saying, "Ciera voted you out of this game. She voted. her mom. out." And Ciera and Laura cry. Again with the melodrama. Stop, you guys. This is getting silly.
Anyway, the challenge is rolling wooden cubes through a rope tunnel, then stacking the cubes so that each side of the four-cube tower has no repeat colors.

Each week, host Jeff Probst will answer a few questions about the most recent episode of Survivor: Blood vs. Water.
Entertainment Weekly: Every time I see a challenge or duel involving footholds, I think to myself: The guy with the big feet is not winning this. Have you all explored the idea of altering the footholds to match people’s shoe size — similar to what you do with challenges in which people only have to hold up a certain percentage of their body weight? Or is it just tough noogies.

The Walking Dead returned on Sunday. And not only is it the first episode of season 4, but it will also mark the first episode of the Scott M. Gimple era. Gimple, a writer on the past two seasons of the AMC drama, replaces Glen Mazzara as showrunner. Mazzara, of course, himself replaced original showrunner Frank Darbaont. So there has been quite a bit of replacing going on. It’s kind of like a semi-famous Minneapolis punk band or a goofy Keanu Reeves movie.
