Dave Chappelle: The Dreamer, the comic’s seventh stand-up special for Netflix, opens with a quote about the nature of success by Henry David Thoreau before capturing the comic in stark black-and-white, moving through the crowd in slow-mo (cigarette in hand, naturally) to Radiohead’s “Daydreaming,” like a championship boxer before a fight. We’re at the Lincoln Theatre in Chappelle’s hometown of Washington, D.C., the very place where he filmed his first stand-up special, Killin’ Them Softly, 24 years ago. Quite a lot’s changed since then,...

Dave Chappelle isn’t exactly toning it down, but his new stand-up special The Dreamer is arguably more reflective and tackles a broader array of topics than his last couple of Netflix efforts.
On Sunday, the controversial comedian returned to Netflix with The Dreamer, his first full-length stand-up special in two years.
The Dreamer plays more like a traditional comedy special than 2021’s ultra-controversial The Closer — which was criticized for being hyper-focused on the trans community and Chappelle defensively responding to his critics — yet the comedian still targets marginalized groups, such as the disabled. One lengthy bit in the new special is about paraplegic former North Carolina Republican representative Madison Cawthorn, who famously alleged he was invited to Washington sex parties. “I don’t doubt they do this shit in Washington [but] who the fuck invites a paraplegic to an orgy?” Chappelle wondered, and, at one point, declared: “I love punching down!

In anticipation of his likely expulsion from the House of Representatives, Rep. George Santos (R-New York) said that he would “wear it like a badge of honor.”
Santos was indicted on federal charges that include money laundering, identity theft and wire fraud. He has also been accused of swindling campaign donors and using their money for purchases at Hermes, subscription fan sites and Botox. He is no longer seeking re-election and is preparing to go to trial next September.
In an X Spaces hosted by conservative commentator Monica Matthews on Friday, Santos said he expected to be expelled when the House votes on the matter this coming week.
“I don’t care,” he said about his impending removal. “You want to expel me? I’ll wear it like a badge of honor. I’ll be the sixth expelled member of Congress in the history of Congress. And guess what? I...

Although scandal-plagued former Rep. Madison Cawthorn attended Vivek Ramaswamy’s pre-debate rally in Miami, he clarified that he still supports Donald Trump as the 2024 Republican presidential nominee.
The former North Carolina congressman told DailyMail that Ramaswamy was the only candidate participating in Wednesday’s debate representing his “values” but that he will still be voting for Trump.
“I’m still hardcore for Trump,” Cawthorne explained. “I would fight and die for Trump.”
According to Ramaswamy’s campaign, the biotech engineer did not reach out to Cawthorn about attending the rally.
Ramaswamy took the final question of the night from the former congressman, who asked about bringing industry to the U.S. from China as tensions rise between the two countries.
Ramaswamy left a moment at the end of the rally to praise Cawthorn.
“This guy is awesome,” he said. “For those of you who don’t know, he’s an American hero.

When “The View” returned to kick off its 27th season on Tuesday morning, host Sunny Hostin brought a legal theory with her — one that makes Donald Trump “ineligible” to be president again, whether he’s convicted or not (though she’s pretty confident he’s going to be convicted).
“There are conservative legal minds and experts that are saying that under the 14th amendment, he is not even allowed to run, even though he hasn’t been convicted yet,” Hostin, who is a former federal prosecutor herself, explained during the first segment of the day.
She noted that this theory has already been successfully tested on Madison Cawthorn, after an appeals court judged ruled last year that people who participate in an insurrection against the U.S. government — such as on January 6 — can be barred from office.

Former North Carolina Congressman Madison Cawthorn has reportedly left Congress without passing on constituent requests and casework initiated during his tenure to his successor, Rep. Chuck Edwards. Edwards, a Republican, ousted Cawthorn from his seat in a primary challenge following a series of scandals that wreaked havoc on Cawthorn’s public image.
Edwards issued a public call on his website earlier this week asking “anyone with outstanding or unfinished casework to please get in touch with his office,” indicating that Cawthorn’s staff had not transferred the information despite it being regarded as standard practice.

Controversial GOP Rep. Madison Cawthorn Fined 15,000 For Promoting ‘Let’s Go Brandon’ Cryptocurrency
Controversial Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-North Carolina) will have to pay 15,000 in fines after an ethics committee found he improperly promoted a cryptocurrency while serving in Congress.
The House Ethics Committee made its findings during an investigation into Cawthorn’s involvement in a cryptocurrency called the “Let’s Go Brandon” coin. “Let’s Go Brandon” is a derogatory term for “F— Joe Biden” used by Maga Republicans.

The committee found “substantial evidence” that he violated rules against conflicts of interest when he received an “impermissible gift” related to the coin. He also received the coin at a discounted rate from that was offered to the public.
He was also accused of failing to disclose his transactions related to the coin in a timely manner, although the committee determined he did not do so knowingly. He will still have to pay 1,000 in late fees to the Treasury Department.

Donald Trump had a message for Republicans about his 2024 presidential announcement: Endorse me now, or pay later.
In the days running up to the election, Trump made a series of phone calls to GOP lawmakers and other elected officials, demanding that they endorse him before he announced he’s running — or at least right after, according to two sources with knowledge of the conversations. The president said he was tracking who endorsed him early, adding that “those who waited too long” were “not gonna like” what happens when he wins.

The power of the Trump endorsement is waning and nowhere was it more apparent than last night’s Georgia Republican primary runoffs. The former president has struggled to translate his endorsements into victories for a GOP seeking electoral gains in the 2022 midterm elections. Trump’s endorsement has been a boon for some primary candidates — most notably J.D. Vance in Ohio — but it’s far from a golden ticket as the party works to find common ground between factions bitterly divided over the future of American conservatism.
In Georgia, Trump-backed candidates floundered in their runoff elections.

Kimmel talked about how Trump bilked the U.S. government out of millions of dollars because he billed them his own secret service detail — “It’s funny to think Donald Trump’s only profitable business venture was being President of the United States,” Kimmel joked.

Following a three-week hiatus, Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update spent the majority of its segment focused on Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars, the biggest story of the week and, as Colin Jost said, “one of the craziest things we’ll see in our lives.”
Weekend Update pretended to be all newsy by opening up with a story about Vladimir Putin, but it only served as a segue for three minutes of Smith jokes.
“Intelligence officials are saying that Vladimir Putin is being misinformed by his advisors...

If you were expecting to hear a lot about Will Smith’s slap of Chris Rock at the Oscars on March 27, tonight’s Saturday Night Live cold open didn’t have a lot to offer.
Sure, James Austin Johnson ‘s Donald Trump showed up towards the end to declare that “I saw slap, I enjoyed slap, I was very impressed with my Hitch.” Swirling around a few references to past flicks by the King Richard star, Johnson’s Trump went on to say “quite an arm on Hitch, I always knew Hitch had an arm.”
“Back in Pursuit of Happyness, he’s slugging the machine on and off the subway,” this season’s Trump rambled. “I thought it was great. You know, they slept in the bathroom in that movie. It’s so sad. it’s a sad night for Hitch too.”

Stephen Colbert clearly finds GOP representative Madison Cawthorn’s claims of orgies and cocaine use among his fellow Republicans hilarious. Because he opened Wednesday’s episode of “The Late Show” with a cold open gag inspired by it, this time trying to imagine just what those orgies would even be like.
And while the imagined orgy was as “boring” as some Republicans claimed DC actually is Irl, it wasn’t so boring that attendees would let Texas Republican Ted Cruz in. Ouch.
As always, the cold open kicked off with a supercut of news explaining the premise, and so then shall we. For those catching up, on Sunday Cawthorn appeared on the “Warrior Poet” podcast, where he said this:
“Look at all these people, a lot of them that I’ve looked up to through my life, I’ve always paid attention to politics. Then all of a sudden you get invited,...

Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-n.C.) admitted claims he had made about his colleagues inviting him to orgies and doing cocaine in front of him were “exaggerated,” House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said after admonishing the freshman congressman, according to multiple reports.
“In the interview, he claims he watched people do cocaine. Then when he comes in he tells me, he says he thinks he saw maybe a staffer in a parking garage from 100 yards away,” McCarthy said, according to Axios.

Matt Gaetz has long been on a crusade to install Donald Trump as House speaker should Republicans win back Congress in November. Trump, however, says he isn’t interested.
“It’s brought up all the time,” Trump told Just the News on Real America’s Voice. “It’s not something I want to do. I want to look at what’s happening and then we’re going to be doing something else. No, it’s not something I would be interested in.”

In an attempt to knock the conversation about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock off the headlines, the news gods gave Americans a particularly weird gift on Monday — Hard right Republican congressman Madison Cawthorn, who claimed in an interview that since arriving in Washington, he’s been invited to orgies by fellow Republicans, some of whom who did cocaine in front of him.
And on Tuesday’s “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert took a wild guess at just who Cawthorn could be talking about, and it’s exactly who most of the people reading this post probably thought of.
But before we get to Colbert’s jokes, here’s what Cawthorn said during an appearance on the “Warrior Poet” podcast:
“The sexual perversion that goes on in Washington … being kind of a young guy in Washington, where the average of is probably 60 or 70 — [you] look at all these people, a lot of...

Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-n.C.) said on a podcast earlier this week that fellow lawmakers have invited him to orgies and done cocaine in front of him. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) wants to have a word with him about it, Politico reported on Tuesday.
Multiple Republicans aired their grievances during a closed-door conference meeting, according to the report. They were concerned about being portrayed as sex-crazed drug users, with Rep. Steve Womack (R-Ark.) saying that many of his colleagues don’t stay up past 9 p.m.

Ukraine is in the throes of fighting off an invasion from Russia and Vladimir Putin, one that has resulted in thousands of lives lost and, on Wednesday, the bombing of a Ukrainian maternity hospital. Democrats and Republicans in the United States have found rare common ground in standing behind Ukraine and its president, Volodomyr Zelensky. It’s been a little more difficult for the GOP, though, the ranks of which have included a number of Putin apologists, most notably former President Trump, who are now trying to temper their praise for the authoritarian.

On Monday, Clay Aiken — best known for coming in second on Season 2 of “American Idol” — announced that he was running for the House of Representatives in North Carolina’s 6th congressional district as a Democrat. Aiken is hoping to replace Rep. David Price, who represented the Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina — also known as the Research Triangle, or just the Triangle — for nearly 35 years. Aiken was one of Price’s constituents, and says he even got Price to speak to his eighth grade social studies class.
It will be Aiken’s second congressional campaign; in 2014, he lost a run for the 2nd congressional district in North Carolina in what was considered to be a safe Republican seat. The 6th district, by contrast, is much bluer, but with at least seven other Democratic candidates vying for the nomination, it is far from assured that Aiken will win the seat.
As the 43-year-old explained to Variety,...

Clay Aiken, the former American Idol star and political activist, on Monday announced another run for Congress, as he seeks a seat in North Carolina.
Aiken is running in a district that includes Durham, and includes territory represented by Rep. David Price (D-nc), who is retiring.
In an announcement video, Aiken said, “As Democrats we have got to get better about speaking up and using our voices, cause those folks ain’t quieting down any time soon.” He was referring to GOP figures like Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert and Madison Cawthorn, who have drawn attention for their harsh rhetoric.
Aiken ran for Congress in 2014, but was defeated in the general election by Republican Renee Ellmers.
This time around, Aiken is running in a district that leans more to the left. Cook Political Report has rated the seat as “solid Democratic.” Aiken, though, faces a long list of rivals for the Democratic nomination,...

Dustin Stockton and Jennifer Lynn Lawrence are set to testify next week before the House select committee investigating the attack on the U.S. Capitol. The pair will deliver testimony and turn over documents, including text messages, that indicate the extensive involvement members of Congress and the Trump administration had in planning the House challenge to certifying Biden’s election and rally near the White House where Donald Trump spoke — efforts that...

Today, Kyle Rittenhouse was acquitted on all charges after killing two people and wounding another while he was conducting his own armed vigilante patrol of Kenosha, Wisconsin, in response to Black Lives Matter protests. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a case about whether people have a constitutional right to concealed-carry permits.
Why am I talking about these two things together? Because in combination, these two cases could mean that it is soon going to be open season on racial-justice protesters around the country.

Kyle Rittenhouse was found not guilty of all charges on Friday after shooting three people and killing two of them during unrest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, last summer. Republicans were thrilled.
“Congratulations to Kyle Rittenhouse for being found Innocent of all charges. It’s called being found Not Guilty,” former President Donald Trump wrote in a statement Friday evening. “And by the way, if that’s not self defense, nothing is!”
“Kyle Rittenhouse is not guilty, my friends!” Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-n.C.) said in a video posted to his Instagram.

In the 25-year history of “The View,” Meghan McCain is one of the only co-hosts to leave on her own — without being fired.
McCain’s decision to quit the most-watched show on daytime TV wasn’t one that came easily for her. Her four years on “The View” were marked by ratings peaks in ABC daytime, as she succeeded at the Hot Topics table where other conservatives — who weren’t Elisabeth Hasselbeck — had failed.
But it was also a devastating time in her personal life. Her father, Sen. John McCain, who had encouraged Meghan to take the job at “The View” in October 2017, died of glioblastoma in August 2018. The country was consumed by Trump. Backstage at “The View,” Meghan felt like she couldn’t say or do anything without someone on the show leaking stories about her being “cold” or “difficult” to the tabloids. On Sunday’s “Last Week Tonight,” John Oliver bemoaned how “Hot Vax Summer” is giving way to “Dips— Autumn,” as America’s Covid-19 cases rise due to the Delta variant. Alarmingly, children are being infected at a high rate, accounting for nearly 15 percent of new cases and reaching record-high hospitalizations during the pandemic.
One of the hardest-hit states is Florida, whose governor, Ron DeSantis, said during a speech at a children’s hospital that “these waves are something you just have to deal with. Oliver said that if you told him a few years ago that the Republican governor of Florida had said that, he would have assumed the governor would have been talking about Miami sinking into the ocean, “not a completely different, totally self-induced crisis.”
Oliver added that it was galling to hear DeSantis say “deal with it” when he is choosing to not deal with it at all.

In-person back to school this year that comes with the added dilemma of each individual school district being left to decide which Covid-19 precautions to enforce — and that’s provoking a lot of heated debate, as John Oliver pointed out in his most recent show.
During his Aug. 15 episode of “Last Week Tonight,” Oliver began the show’s typical news roundup introduction segment by focusing on the challenges school districts face in implementing Covid-19 precautions, like mandating every student wear a mask at school.
He also pointed out that part of the reason there’s a rise in children being hospitalized for the coronavirus is because the adults in their communities, that are eligible for vaccines, are often refusing to take them — and bringing Covid home to their kids. Since only children ages 12-15 are eligible for Covid-19 vaccinations, school-age populations are especially vulnerable to infection.

During a Friday interview on Fox News, the White House’s chief medical adviser was asked about the recent attacks from bloviating Republicans in Congress who have tried to discredit him, accusing him of hiding details regarding a still unproven theory that Covid-19 was either purposely developed or was accidentally leaked from a lab in China. As the rate of Covid-19 vaccination slows and cases rise again, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy on Thursday called on tech platforms and the news media to take greater steps to combat misinformation.
Appearing at the the White House briefing room, Murthy spoke about the role that social media plays as a super spreader of Covid-19 and vaccine disinformation.
“Today we live in a world where misinformation poses an imminent and insidious threat to our nation’s health,” Murthy said, as he blamed falsehoods as one reason the pace of vaccinations was slowing. Data show that 99% of new hospitalizations and deaths are among the unvaccinated.
“Simply put, health misinformation has cost us lives,” he said.
Murthy today issued a Surgeon General Advisory, reserved for urgent public health threats, on the dangers of health misinformation. (Read it here.) Included are a host of recommendations for tech platforms, including redesigning algorithms...
