Despite the fact that he still just can’t get over the fact that NBC fired Shane Gillis for publicly making racist and homophobic comments, Lorne Michaels seems a tad less broken up about the recent nixing of Saturday Night Live cast members Punkie Johnson, Molly Kearney and Chloe Troast. While Johnson and Kearney were less vocal on the matter when the news first hit last month, Troast quickly revealed on Instagram that she was “not asked back to SNL this season.”
This was a real bummer to be honest, since all three of them were solid performers. And Troast was only given one season to prove herself as a featured player. Even within that brief window of time, though, she managed to stand out in sketches like “Little Orphan Cassidy.”

Saturday Night Live is 50 years old. The comedy series has shaped generations of viewers, and it will be dealt the difficult task of remaining relevant and biting while at the same time reflecting on the five decades that came before.
Part of the reason SNL has been able to maintain relevance, of course, is that it's constantly bringing in new talent. There are new writers and cast members nearly every season, and those who exit at the same time. With that in mind, we decided to break down the roster for season 50, so you know which comedians to expect and which to lament.

Jean Smart struggles to get a word in with Saturday Night Live‘s season 50 premiere promo, battling it out against nostalgic flashbacks to early seasons of the show.
“Fifty years of hosts, 50 years of laughs, 50 years of memories,” the Hacks star — who will host the season premiere this Saturday — says in the promo. Her words are interspersed with clips from early seasons of the show, featuring stars like Eddie Murphy, Steve Martin and more.
As the trailer continues, Smart says, “You’re actually going to show a clip from every season to cut me off?” Her sentences then become more fragmented as further flashbacks interrupt her mid-sentence and mid-word.
“Can we make this a little bit more about me?” she quips.
Smart will be joined by musical guest Jelly Roll, both making their debut on the show. On Oct. 5, comedian Nate Bargatze will take his second turn as host, with musical guest Coldplay.

The show’s early cast members didn’t get much of a send-off either, but in recent decades, Lorne Michaels has occasionally tipped his cap to exiting cast members who served the show well.
Here are five of the show’s most heartfelt farewells…
1 Will Ferrell
Ferrell’s goodbye was the first in which cast members appeared as themselves to say au revoir. Over sentimental music, viewers heard from cast members like:
Ana Gasteyer: “I worked with Will for six years, and it was more fun than anything I’ve ever done.”Jimmy Fallon, telling on himself: “It was hard for me to work with Will because...

The trips down memory lane continued at the Emmys Sunday as former Saturday Night Live vets Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wiig, Seth Meyers and Bowen Yang reunited on stage to help celebrate the late night show’s 50th anniversary this season.
Ahead of SNL‘s Sept. 28 premiere, the alums gathered to yuk it up about how much Lorne Michaels has lost the Emmy — 85 times, to be exact — before giving away the trophy for Best Writing for a Variety Special.
It’s a big year for the venerable franchise. Jason Reitman‘s SNL origins movie, Saturday Night will have a limited release in Los Angeles, NYC and Toronto beginning Sept 27 before breaking wide on Oct. 11.
And then in February, SNL will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a weekend-long look back at the sketch series, culminating with a three-hour live primetime special on Sunday, Feb. 16.

They say that the first cut is the deepest, but the second has to hurt even more for Chloe Troast, the rookie Saturday Night Live cast member who got the axe this week. As Troast revealed in a cast Q&a video last year, this isn’t the first time SNL has let her know she wasn’t wanted.

Before Troast was hired for Season 49, she came this close to getting the job in Season 48. In response to the question, “How did you become a cast member?” Troast revealed that she’d tried out for SNL the previous year as well. “I auditioned last year and I got in and I missed sound check. And I was like, ‘Well, they’re not here for me anyway,’ so I just kind of went out there and did it.”

Chloe Troast’s exit from Saturday Night Live was “not my choice,” the comedian told fans on social media Wednesday.
“Hey everyone! I wanted to let you know that I will not be on SNL next season,” she wrote on TikTok. “This was not my choice, I wish I was there getting to be with my friends. It truly felt like a second home. Thank you to everyone. I love you all.”
Troast joined SNL as a featured player for season 49. Her exit comes after one season with the sketch series. NBC announced the move on Tuesday, in conjunction with the hiring of three new featured players for season 50: Ashley Padilla, Emil Wakim and Jane Wickline.

The fun news that Saturday Night Live hired three new comics yesterday was dampened by another casting surprise — the departure of last year’s new featured player, Chloe Troast. While few were surprised by the exits of Punkie Johnson (she had struggled to break through for four seasons) and Molly Kearney, Troast showed tremendous promise in sketches that featured her powerful singing voice and offbeat comic sensibilities.
While Johnson and Kearney were vague about the reason behind their departures, Troast made it clear in her Instagram post that the decision was not hers. “Unfortunately i was not asked back to SNL this season. I wish I was going to be back with all the amazing friends i made there, it truly felt like home. But it wasn’t in the cards.”
Current and former Saturday Night Live cast members responded with kindness.

On the eve of the kickoff of Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary season, the show announced that it was hiring three new cast members, according to Deadline: Ashley Padilla of the Groundlings, stand-up comic Emil Wakim and TikTok star Jane Wickline. In a somewhat surprising move, Chloe Troast revealed that she won’t be back after a promising first season, joining Punkie Johnson and Molly Kearney as departing cast members.
As for the new cast members? Padilla comes to the show from the Groundlings, the improv sketch troupe that’s delivered cast members like Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig and Molly Shannon. She recently guested on Curb Your Enthusiasm and Night Court.
Wakim becomes the show’s first Lebanese-American cast member. He made his Tonight Show debut in 2022 and has spent recent years opening for Hasan Minhaj and Nikki Glaser.

Wickline brings her off-kilter comedy (and nearly one million followers) to the show.

The 50th season of "Saturday Night Live" will premiere on September 28, 2024, and we already know that some faces from recent seasons won't be coming back. Punkie Johnson and Molly Kearney have both already announced their official departure from the late night sketch comedy series before season 50 begins later this month. With just under three weeks left until the show starts this milestone season, the show has shed one more cast member. However, thanks to three newly hired featured players, it seems as if the size of the overall ensemble will remain the same.

It was sad to see them go, but the bright side is that SNL has now added three brand new cast members to fill their spot. With 20-plus cast members and a rotating guest roster featuring the world’s biggest movie and musical stars, Saturday Night Live has to be the most expensive comedy show in history. Lorne Michaels alone pulls in about $30 million to $40 million per year, justifiable because he also has to deal with Jimmy Fallon on a nightly basis. But what about the other economics of SNL?
Here are five money facts about the ways Saturday Night Live goes ka-ching…
1 First-Year Cast Members Make Six Figures
Does landing a job on Saturday Night Live put you into the penthouse? Not necessarily. First-year cast members get $7,000 an episode, says Cosmopolitan. Since a typical season has 21 episodes, that works out to a cool $147,000. That ain’t bad, but living near 30 Rock isn’t cheap either. Ask former cast members like David Spade and Dana Carvey, who regularly complain on their podcast that their early salaries barely paid the rent.

When Andy Cohen asked Bowen Yang about the worst “Saturday Night Live” host he’d ever worked with, the comedian had an answer ready.
Although he didn’t name names, Yang revealed that the guilty party was a guy — although it seemed even revealing their gender was more than he intended.
“This man who… this person, this host made multiple cast members cry on Wednesday before the table read because he hated the ideas,” Yang told Cohen on the Monday’s “Watch What Happens Live” alongside frequent collaborator Matt Rogers.
Yang was hired as a writer in 2018 for Season 44 before being bumped up to on-camera talent for Season 45, so the range of suspects is a long one. However, Rogers offered a small hint, adding, “He’s got new PR and everything.”
Yang recently received his fourth Emmy nomination for his work on the NBC sketch show, and his third as outstanding supporting actor.

Punkie Johnson and Molly Kearney recently announced that Saturday Night Live won’t have them to kick around anymore, waving goodbye as the show prepares for Season 50. In theory, that opens up a slot or two for new featured players — and one Redditor thinks they know who is getting the job.

As you can see in the video, Callas has auditioned for Saturday Night Live before, standing on the familiar Studio 8H stage as he shows off credible impressions of Mark Ruffalo, Jason Bateman, Elon Musk, Ryan Reynolds and Joe Rogan. You can’t say the guy’s not topical.

“Saturday Night Live” has already booked Maya Rudolph to return as Vice President Kamala Harris, but who should play her newly named running mate, Midwestern nice guy and governor of Minnesota Tim Walz?
The most apparently obvious candidate — similarly white-haired comedian Steve Martin — has, sadly, already turned down the gig as of Wednesday. But fear not, we’ve got plenty of other suggestions for Lorne Michaels to consider, including A-listers like Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt and John Goodman.

The very wholesome two-time Oscar winner Hanks, who is 68, has hosted “Saturday Night Live” a whopping 10 times, including as Halloween icon David S. Pumpkins. And we’ve already seen him with white hair when he played heroic pilot Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger in the 2016 biopic from Clint Eastwood. And he kind of looked like Walz when he hosted a...

Almost immediately after Kamala Harris announced her running mate as Tim Walz, people on social media began dream-casting Steve Martin to play the role on “Saturday Night Live.”
Martin, who not only bears a physical resemblance to the Minnesota governor but also gives off the same friendly dad vibe, embraced the online fervor, joking on Threads: “I just learned that Tim Walz wants to go on the road with Marty Short.”
The next morning, Lorne Michaels apparently called Martin with an offer, which Martin unfortunately declined. “I wanted to say no and, by the way, he wanted me to say no,” Martin told the Los Angeles Times. “I said, ‘Lorne, I’m not an impressionist. You need someone who can really nail the guy.’ I was picked because I have gray hair and glasses.”

Every time America faces an election for President of the United States, all eyes turn to "Saturday Night Live." The late night sketch comedy show's timely, political humor that often opens each new episode has been rather stale over the past decade or so, largely thanks to the inherently laughable clown show that was the Donald Trump presidency being more outrageous than any parody could be. By comparison, the lack of easy targets during Joe Biden's presidency, other than the man's age, haven't done "SNL" any favors either. And yet the show persists in tackling timely political satire inspired by the week's headlines.
Indeed, the shortcomings of "SNL" haven't kept the show from preparing for the upcoming political brawl, with Maya Rudolph being brought back to play Vice President Kamala Harris alongside James Austin Johnson's pitch perfect Trump impression. However, we're still wondering who will be playing the...
