In a surprising move, Hulu has announced the cancellation of The Other Black Girl after just one season. The series, based on Zakiya Dalila Harris’ bestselling novel, aimed to bring a haunting yet realistic portrayal of workplace dynamics through its thrilling narrative. We really wanted for it to be unclear what is the actual scary part. Obviously, there’s the twist that’s happening, but also, it’s being gaslit in your office! shared Harris in an interview with The New York Times, reflecting on her creative vision. The Other Black Girl will not return.
Hulu has canceled the comedy series based on the book of the same name by Zakiya Dalila Harris after a single season, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
First put in development in April 2020 before Tara Duncan signed on to serve as president of Disney’s Bipoc-focused studio Onyx Collective, the 10-episode satirical comedy about the publishing world dropped its full season in September to impressive reviews. The series currently has an 86 percent rating among critics on Rotten Tomatoes, though audiences seem to have rejected The Other Black Girl with that score sitting at a lackluster 50 percent among viewers.
Danielle Henderson (Sorry for Your Loss) originally was set to serve as showrunner but was ultimately replaced by Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey. Exec producers on the series included Onyx’s Duncan, Rashida Jones, Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey, Adam Fishbach and author Harris.

"The Other Black Girl," Hulu's new series based on the best-selling novel by Zakiya Dalila Harris, is an important addition to the streamer's arsenal as a show that centers on the hostile environments that Black women can face in the workplace. It's a near-universal experience for many Black women and is finally being represented on screen.
But when the show takes a turn and reveals the main villain to be another Black woman perpetuating violence against her own community, the show falls short, creating a world where Black women are pitted against each other. As a Black woman who has often been the "only" in workplace settings, the experiences that Nella (played by Sinclair Daniel) goes through at Wagner Publishing resonated. But, unlike Nella, I always had Black colleagues to lift me up, not keep me down.
I have always found that the Black women I worked with had my back.

Zakiya Dalila Harris rarely saw another natural-haired Black woman in the office. But one time it did. She was an assistant editor at Knopf Doubleday, a publishing group within Penguin Random House, and a woman stepped into the bathroom. Instead of a serendipitous smile, though, Harris received the cold shoulder from her colleague.
“I definitely thought we’d have some kind of, ‘Hey,’ the nod, and that didn’t happen,” Harris recalls. “I ended up going back to my desk and started writing this book.”

We’re halfway through September, which means the most entertaining show on TV is back: Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show.”
The Emmy-winning drama starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon returned this week for its 10-episode third season, which picks up two years after the events of the Season 2 finale. Naturally, this means big changes are happening, not just at the fictional network within the show, which is struggling after launching a streaming service right as the pandemic hit the U.S. (the series loves its “ripped-from-the-headlines” approach to storytelling), but for the actual show as well. Emmy winner Jon Hamm joins the cast as tech billionaire Paul Marks, who takes an interest in Uba (and perhaps a little bit more), while Nicole Beharie portrays new “Morning Show” anchor Chris Hunter. The first two episodes are currently streaming on Apple TV+, and with so much drama already beginning to unfold,...

“How much of yourself are you willing to sacrifice to succeed?” That’s the question showrunners Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey were seeking to answer when they adapted Zakiya Dalila Harris’ novel “The Other Black Girl” for TV with executive producer Rashida Jones.
And somewhere in the midst of exploring microaggressions and race relations in the workplace, Nella (Sinclair Daniel) finds her answer as she winds up caught in Harris’ fictional sorority of Black women success stories.
“The Other Black Girl” follows Nella, a promising editor’s assistant at the fictional Wagner Books, whose life seems to be on a fast-track to success until she meets Hazel (Ashleigh Murray), the new Black assistant whose style and swagger quickly draws the attention of the higher-up executives in the office.

Can one small thing address systemic racism in the workplace? Probably not, but The Other Black Girl presents a unique idea woven into a tale of anxiety and dread. Adapted from a book of the same title that was released as recently as 2021, The Other Black Girl sets out to be a workplace thriller that follows a young black woman in the publishing industry. In reality, it plays out more like a satire than a thriller, and the nail-biting stuff is far more limited in comparison to the relentless workplace humor. I found the first half of the show especially captivating. The pacing is great, and there’s an element of mystery, but at the same time, there’s also a lot of fun stuff, like getting to know our main character, Nella, who is quite delightful.

Every minority in the good old U.S. of A has heard or internalized that damaging myth: There can only be one. One model minority, one diverse member of the team (or cast) — and in Hulu’s “The Other Black Girl,” one editorial star at Wagner Books, as long as she falls in line. The 10-episode thriller (available all at once) is a faithful and gripping adaptation that will leave viewers exhilarated, entertained, and wanting more — especially from star Sinclair Daniel.

“The Other Black Girl” is a rarity for Black women in scripted television. The latest series from Onyx Collective to premiere on Hulu, this psychological thriller and satire tinged with horror offers a rare and provocative look into the challenges facing Black women within the larger white society, while also exploring their internal tensions through a mainstream premise.
Adapted from the 2021 book of the same name from Zakiya Dalila Harris, the show centers two Black women working in book publishing, widely acknowledged as one of the least diverse industries in the country. Nella Rogers (Sinclair Daniel) is a promising young employee at Wagner Books, with eyes on becoming an impactful editor like her idol Kendra Rae Phillips, the publisher’s first and only Black editor to date, did back in the early 1980s. Across much of corporate America, it’s taken almost for granted that things have been “getting better” for racial minorities: that there are more Black voices in positions of influence than there ever have been; that diversity and inclusivity are more prized than ever; that every generation of trailblazers and role models begets the next; that no matter how unjust things remain, they’re still better than they were three or four decades ago. And sure, some of it might even be true.
But there’s a special frustration to being told all this when you can see with your own eyes that it isn’t always the way things are, to being instructed to just wait your turn, to gritting your teeth in the meantime. Hulu’s The Other Black Girl, set largely in the lily-white territory of book publishing, taps into that tension with every genre in its...

You won’t know whether to laugh or scream — it’s Ok to do both — during The Other Black Girl, Hulu‘s sensational comic thriller, adapted from Zakiya Dalila Harris’ buzzy bestseller. A tonal rollercoaster, the series unfolds over 10 blissfully brisk half-hour chapters that keep a binge from feeling like a slog, as the series morphs from a Devil Wears Prada-style workplace satire into an audacious, radically charged twist on The Stepford Wives weirdness. Just try not to cringe when a mentor tells Nella (the endearingly eager Sinclair Daniel), an ambitious editorial assistant at New York’s very white Wagner Books publishing house, “You just need a little polish.” She has already endured so many patronizing micro-aggressions as Wagner’s sole Black employee, doing the bidding of her unctuous boss and almost never feeling seen or heard, that you share Nella’s delight when the chipper, hip Hazel (Ashleigh Murray...

Literary legend Toni Morrison once called racism a distraction. “It keeps you from doing your work,” she said during a 1975 speech. “It keeps you explaining, over and over again, your reason for being.” Black people must contend with everything from blatant acts of racist terrorism to small microaggressions that filter into our everyday lives. Instead of existing, you find yourself in a state of constant emotional regulation and survival, one that is exhaustingly unfair and unsustainable. For people of color and Black folks navigating predominantly white spaces, this constant state of code-switching and performance can quickly become horrific and soul-sucking.

When The Other Black Girl hit bookshelves June 1, 2021, it was already a phenomenon. The manuscript went through a 14-way auction, eventually landing at Atria for a seven-figure deal — and an adaptation was already in the works at Hulu after a similarly competitive bidding war. The novel became an instant New York Times best-seller.
Zakiya Dalila Harris wrote the thriller (her first) from her own experience as one of two Black people on her floor of the Penguin Random House offices, where she worked as an assistant editor. The book’s protagonist, Nella, is drawn to new hire Hazel in hopes they can bond over racism at the fictional Wagner Books before realizing that Hazel has sinister intentions.
Harris took a break from writing her next novel to speak with THR about what it’s been like to work on the adaptation — which premieres Sept. 13 on Hulu and counts Rashida Jones as an executive producer.

The Other Black Girl is poised to be one of the most talked-about shows of the year.
Hulu dropped the official trailer for its adaptation of Zakiya Dalila Harris' best-selling novel on Wednesday, and it's as unsettling as expected.
"Nella, an editorial assistant, is tired of being the only Black girl at her company, so she's excited when Hazel is hired," the logline reads.
"But as Hazel's star begins to rise, Nella spirals out and discovers something sinister is going on at the company."
It's a compelling description, and the trailer nails what the above describes, so that's a good thing.
Sinclair Daniel, Ashleigh Murray, Brittany Adebumola, Hunter Parrish, Bellamy Young, Eric McCormack, and Garcelle Beauvais star.
The Other Black Girl is executive produced by Rashida Jones, Adam Fishbach, Zakiya Dalila Harris, Jordan Reddout, Gus Hickey, Tara Duncan, and Temple Hill's Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey.

Hulu released the trailer Wednesday for “The Other Black Girl,” adapted from the best-selling novel by Zakiya Dalila Harris.
The series will follow Nella (Sinclair Daniels) who joyfully leaves her loneliness behind as the only Black employee at a publishing company, Wagner Books, when Hazel (Ashleigh Murray) gets hired as an editorial assistant like Nella.
Suddenly, all of Vera’s (Bellamy Young) demands become less grueling when she can share the experience of being Black at a majority white-staffed company with Hazel — until things get weird.
“Wagner’s just … you’ll see,” Nella tells Hazel at first in the trailer you can watch above.
Right as Vera tells Nella that she is ready to recommend a promotion to assistant editor from editorial assistant for Nella, some sinister things start happening that only Nella feels like she is aware of.

Showtime has announced the release date of their upcoming limited series “Fellow Travelers,” starring Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey. The eight-episode drama will premiere on Oct. 27.
Created by Academy Award nominee Ron Nyswaner and based on Thomas Mallon’s novel of the same name, “Fellow Travelers” is both a romance and a political thriller, depicting the secret relationship between two men who meet in McCarthy-era Washington. Bomer plays Hawkins Fuller, a man with a lucrative behind-the-scenes job in politics, and Bailey plays an idealistic, religious young man. Their romance begins at the same time that Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn declare war on “subversives and sexual deviants.” The show tracks the protagonists over four decades, through the Vietnam War protests, the drugs and disco of the 1970s, and the AIDS crisis of the 1980s.
“Fellow Travelers” also stars Jelani Alladin, Allison Williams and Noah J. Ricketts. Daniel Minahan serves...

Something isn’t right — well, several things aren’t right — in the first trailer for The Other Black Girl, which Hulu released Wednesday. But will protagonist Nella figure out what’s behind the sinister goings-on before they take her out?

Yesterday, we shared the news that Insidious: The Red Door, the fifth film in the Insidious horror franchise (you can read our review Here), has officially become the highest-grossing entry in the franchise at the worldwide box office, with its $174,382,000 leaving previous record holder Insidious: The Last Key‘s final count of $172,811,971 in the dust. Now the film has been given a premium VOD release, showing up on outlets like Vudu and Amazon (rent or buy it at This Link).

The screenplay was written by Halloween Kills co-writer Scott Teems, based on an idea from Leigh Whannell, who created the franchise with James Wan. I haven’t seen much chatter about Insidious: The Red Door, the fifth film in the Insidious horror franchise (you can read our review Here), but movie-goers have obviously been showing up for it. The film had a very successful opening weekend, drawing in $32.65 million at the domestic box office and $64 million worldwide on a budget that’s said to be around $16 million. Now The Numbers has confirmed that Insidious: The Red Door has managed to become the highest-grossing film in the franchise at the worldwide box office. It’s currently sitting at a total of $174,382,000, surpassing its predecessor Insidious: The Last Key‘s final count of $172,811,971. And its theatrical run isn’t over yet.
As of right now, Insidious: The Red Door‘s domestic number sits at $78,082,000, so Insidious: Chapter 2 still holds the domestic record of $83,586,447. But if The Red Door can manage to pull in another $5 million and change at home,...

Sony is probably feeling very glad that they already have the spin-off Thread: An Insidious Tale in the works, with Jeremy Slater writing/directing and Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani attached to star. While examining the film’s success, Deadline revealed that there was a point when the filmmakers were concerned that the movie wasn’t scary enough, so there were reshoots to enhance the jump scares!

Hold onto your lanterns, horror fans, because the Insidious franchise is back with its fifth installment, Insidious: The Red Door. This time, actor Patrick Wilson takes the helm as director, aiming to deliver thrills while delving into the intricate dynamics of the Lambert family. Though it falls slightly short of its predecessors, this film manages to offer a handful of effective scares and characters that may not fully come alive but still contribute to a haunting trip to the movies.

If you’re anything like me, you probably haven’t given too much thought to what happened to the Lambert family after the end of 2013’s Insidious: Chapter 2. After all, their story seemed to have come to a definitive close, and even the filmmakers didn’t seem to particularly care since they continued the franchise with two prequels. But since horror films are money in the bank even in the post-pandemic theatergoing era, now comes Insidious: The Red Door, which revisits the original characters ten years later. You won’t be surprised to hear that they’re not doing very well.

For a movie so transparently intended to tie up the loose ends of a long-frayed horror franchise that’s only put out prequels for the last 10 years, “Insidious: The Red Door” is a surprisingly accessible introduction to the Lambert family and their unfortunate history of demonic possession. This jolt-happy July programmer might be as dull and rusty as a nail in the coffin could possibly get without breaking apart, but “Insidious” newcomers should rest assured that they’ll be able to follow along with their friends’ exasperation.
One reason you should be able to jump in easily enough: the film starts with young Dalton (Ty Simpkins) and his dad Josh (Patrick Wilson) being hypnotized to forget everything that happened in “Insidious” and “Insidious: Chapter 2,” which effectively puts them on the same page as most of the people in the audience. For another thing, Scott Teems’ script — somehow even thinner than...

There’s a moment in “Insidious: The Red Door” that encapsulates why the movie isn’t more insidious. Josh Lambert (Patrick Wilson), the father from the first two “Insidious” films (this one is number five), has just dropped his son off for his freshman year at college. The son, Dalton, is once again played by Ty Simpkins, who was just a spooked kid in the earlier films; now he’s a spooked surly emo art student draped in hippie hair. Eight years ago, Dalton and his father were hypnotized so that they would lose all memory of the Further, the spirit zone Dalton got sucked into. The hypnosis worked; they’ve forgotten the living nightmares they saw. But now the visions are coming back.

While ghosts by themselves are frightening, the idea that they can hurt the very people we love is several shades scarier. “The Conjuring” and “Insidious”—the two James Wan joints that have spun the two most successful and sophisticated supernatural horror franchises of the last decade—understood this timeless fear at a deep level. Through respective sequels and spin-offs that you probably have mixed up at least once, both of these collections handed us stories about loving but desperately trapped families, with only bad options to choose from in their ghost-infested lives.
Now “Insidious: The Red Door” revives the tale of one of these movie clans—the one haunted by a spooky form of sleepwalking starring the terrific “Scream King” Patrick Wilson, and not the other one that also stars the same Patrick Wilson—reuniting the Lamberts nearly a decade after the disturbing happenings of “Insidious: Chapter 2.” If you are...

Insidious: The Red Door, the fifth installment of the Insidious franchise and helmed by actor-turned-director Patrick Wilson, promises a dive into the haunted memories of the past, but the script by Scott Teems delivers little more than a stifling yawn. Alongside Wilson, the film stars Ty Simpkins, Rose Bryne and Sinclair Daniel.
The film begins where Insidious 2 concluded, with Josh Lambert (Wilson) and his suppressed memories of “The Further.” It then abruptly shifts to the solemn setting of the funeral of Josh’s mother, Lorraine (played by Barbara Hershey in previous films). While Dalton (Simpkins), Josh’s oldest son, reads from Scripture, the estranged Josh and Renai (Bryne) and other siblings wrestle with their loss. Also at the funeral, an encounter with Carl (played by Steve Coulter in previous films), the man responsible for erasing Josh’s memories, highlights the depths of Josh’s amnesia.

As its title suggests, Insidious: The Red Door, the fifth entry in the franchise, returns to the Lambert family to close the door on their ongoing saga with The Further. Set a decade after the events of Insidious: Chapter Two, star Patrick Wilson pulls double duty for this sequel, making his feature debut with a sentimental entry more interested in exploring buried secrets and family trauma than the paranormal. Less a sequel and more a continuation of Chapter Two, The Red Door gives a tender send-off to the Lamberts.
Flashback scenes from Chapter Two catch unfamiliar audiences up to speed; after young Dalton (Ty Simpkins) helps dad Josh (Patrick Wilson) escape the Further and return home, the family decides to suppress their memories. The idea, of course, is to prevent future astral projecting into the Further, closing the door on pervading entities hoping to cross into the real world.

“Insidious: The Red Door,” out on Friday, is sure to bring back some ghostly thrills — along with the return of franchise stars Patrick Wilson (who also directs), Rose Byrne and Ty Simpkins. And while TheWrap spoke to the cast and crew about the horror sequel, we had to wonder — did any of the folks involved with “Insidious: The Red Door” have any real-life ghost encounters of their own?
As it turns out, producer Jason Blum, who has also overseen the “Paranormal Activity” franchise and the recent “Halloween” trilogy, had a really spooky ghost story that he was all too eager to share.

It’s time to revisit the 13-year-old franchise that, frankly, shook the horror world when it began. Does the new movie have a similar impact? Not really, but there are some positives to it, and maybe, just maybe, it’s setting up the franchise for new things. It is lovely to see the same kids grow up and play the same roles again. Ty Simpkins is particularly good in this, but a standout character is Sinclair Daniel’s “Chris Winslow.” Her comic timing is perfect, and we almost forgot the lack of Specs & Tucker in the movie (almost). While it is said that Dalton and Josh go deeper into The Further this time around, it looks like the franchise has gotten lost in the deep and fails to impress. Still, as a drama, it’s pretty fun, still has the sinister eeriness of an Insidious movie, and also carries the same jumpscares forward.

Since the release of James Wan’s original fright flick, Insidious, I’ve been excited about the franchise. The 2010 feature offered an incredible cast with Rose Byrne, Patrick Wilson, and Lin Shaye. It also managed to bring on the spooks in entertaining ways. And it’s been a few years since Insidious: Chapter 2, where we saw the Lambert family traumatized by what lurks in “The Further.” And now, in the fourth sequel, after a few years of forgetting, Dalton (Ty Simpkins) and his father, Josh (Patrick Wilson), are about to get a reminder of what hides in their memory. As a fan of the series, it’s great to see this cast return, especially since Insidious: The Red Door is the directorial debut of its star, Patrick Wilson.

All four films in the Insidious franchise to this point have been rated PG-13, and the upcoming fifth film isn’t going to shake things up. The Motion Picture Association has announced that their ratings board has given Insidious: The Red Door – which is set to reach theatres on July 7th – a PG-13 rating for “violence, terror, frightening images, strong language and suggestive references“. And this rating comes along just in time for tickets to go on sale, as they’re now available on sites like Fandango.
