Discovery said today that its cable nets TLC and Hgtv are teaming to revive the 2000s home-makeover series while you were out.
The premiere of the first series co-production under Discovery’s expanded lifestyle portfolio will be simulcast on both networks, with each brand lending its special flair to the series, Discovery said. Production begins this month for a 2019 premiere.
While You Were Out will feature TLC and Hgtv stars designing one room in neighboring homes
while each set of homeowners send their significant others on a weekend getaway to await the ultimate surprise reveal upon their return. The nets will air their own version of the same episode featuring the same homeowners, designers and carpenters.
“This is an exciting moment for the newly combined Discovery Lifestyle portfolio and for our passionate, female audiences,” said Howard Lee, President and Gm of TLC, and Allison Page, President and Gm of Hgtv and Food Network.

“Our kids, very early on, were embracing things I think kids a natural aversion to,” Yip tells People. “Our kids love broccoli, Brussels sprouts, calamari, they love spicy food. They love ethnic food. Our daughter loves sriracha on her eggs in the morning.”
Continues the father of two, “They are really very adventurous eaters.

Trading Spaces is coming back to televisions nationwide, and fans are already getting giddy with visions of new two-day room revamps.
On Tuesday, TLC president and general manager Nancy Daniels announced that the early 2000s home renovation series would be returning to the network in 2018 – but provided little other detail.
So, until the network is ready to divulge, here’s some things from Trading Spaces‘ original run that we’re hoping will carry on through the reboot.

Vern Yip confirmed to Access Atlanta that Hgtv has cancelled Hgtv Design Star. Yip said ratings were still good, so I’m guessing a bigger issue is that later seasons of the show never found a designer who matched the impact of David Bromstad.
Matt Smith says he’s already asking when Doctor Who will do a story featuring multiple Doctors, so he can return to the series. As long as they manage to keep these meetings of the Doctors from feeling commonplace, I’m all for it.
The Daily Beast declares that last week’s Modern Family wedding was a “landmark moment for marriage equality” for a variety of reasons. That includes Modern Family position as a mainstream hit, the fact that their wedding was a special episode but not a “very special” episode and that the couple involved were a regular characters with a prominent role every week.

If you’re in the market for the fifth season DVD of Castle, you don’t really need to be sold, and if you aren’t, you should get there, despite the fact that I’m going to tell you that it wasn’t the show’s best season.
I’ve been a fan since the beginning (check out the original show review here), but the fourth and fifth seasons have not been quite as solid for me as the first three. The latest season still pulls you along, maintains most of the fun, and has some interesting cases, but it heads down a tricky road in some respects. Still, as far as I’m concerned you have to take that in the best possible light. It doesn’t change the fact that it’s one of the better shows on television just because it isn’t quite as good as it used to be.

The final episode of season seven of Hgtv's Next Design Star picks up right where we left off last week; the final two designers, Danielle and Britany leave the judges table and return to the Designer's Lounge where they find mentor David Bromstad.
David's there to give them their final challenge: They will each create a fully-produced five minute pilot presentation of their own design show. They'll each work with a real family whose home both has two adjoining rooms that need their design help. They'll have three days to complete the design and pilot show, they'll have a full TV crew to work with, and a "fantastic design team." That's right, you've guessed it, each "fantastic design team" will be made up of their former competitors.
Britany (right) with her team Mikel and Rachel
Britany who has first choice in alternate selection, chooses Rachel in the first round, and Mikel in the second.

Two very capable, very personable, very talented ladies were left standing in the latest season of Hgtv's "Design Star." Danielle Colding and Britany Simon both created strong pilots for the finale, but which one impressed judges Genevieve Gorder, Vern Yip and host/mentor David Bromstad the most? The winner is ...
Danielle! Ultimately, Danielle's "Shop This Room" impressed the judges enough to order a new series, starting in August.
Her pilot showed her putting together a creative, inspiring space for a young artistic family. Her perky attitude was evident and a pleasure to watch. As Genevieve said in her criticism, "You just seemed like this effortless communicator. You brought the viewer into your design."
Brittany's "Picture Perfect Spaces" brought together a funky, personalized living room and dining room for her clients, complete with very sweet photos of their little boy. Genevieve loved her confidence, and Vern loved the fact that she...

We’re down to the final three, and this week, Britany, Hilari and Danielle meet up with mentor David Bromstad in a field, where’s he’s surrounded by yurts. David explains that in keeping with the Hgtv Design Star tradition of decorating untraditional spaces, (glass homes and tiny houses), the final three will design for a yurt. David explains that yurts are portable structure with round walls built on a wood lattice frame. They are originally from Asia and have been used for centuries.
The challenge is to turn their yurts into fantasy bedroom suites. They’ll have two days to complete the challenge, and they’ll have the help of some of Hgtv and Diy’s best known carpenters. Danielle is assigned Chip Wade, who I know from Curb Appeal the Block, but who apparently has his own show, Elbow Room. Britany will work with the “star carpenter” of Design on a Dime,...

The final four designers visit The Talk
Episode seven brings us to Marina Del Rey, where the final four designers, Mikel, Hilari, Danielle and Britany meet up with mentor David Bromstad and learn that for their next challenge, they’ll each bring their unique design point of view to a living/dining room space in a brand new condo. As an added twist, David explains that they’ll also be selecting a color to incorporate into their spaces in a meaningful way. They each reach into a paint bucket and select a color. Mikel picks green, Danielle selects blue, Britany draws yellow, and Hilari is left with red. After the judges’ negative reaction to her red-countered kitchen from last week, Hilari’s not too pleased to be working with red again. They have two days to complete the challenge and they will have assistance with painting and carpentry.

It’s the kitchen episode! Our six remaining designers meet up with mentor David Bromstad at a photo studio, where he introduces Hgtv Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, Sara Peterson, who announces that the winning kitchen will be featured in an upcoming issue of Hgtv Magazine.
Sara tells them to be adventurous with color, because a colorful kitchen looks fantastic in photos. She further explains that “we want to be wowed by your styling tricks because finishing touches can make all the difference.” Stanley interviews that this is a sweet challenge because he’ll be able to put his artistic abilities to work. (Uh oh.)
David gets down to the details of the challenge, explaining that they’ll be working in pairs and that they’ll use as inspiration a distinctive new sink and faucet provided by Kohler. The three options are an industrial stainless sink in an L shaped kitchen, a...

This week, we’re going Hollywood, but before that it’s breakfast time at the designers' house, where Kris interviews that he’s tired of being safe and that he’ll do everything within his power to be on top. Oh you clever Hgtv editors, you handed us the kiss of death elimination statement in the first 30 seconds - I even wrote it down, and I still didn’t “see” it until I reviewed my notes.
The seven remaining designers meet up with mentor David Bromstad in a large open space where they learn they’ll each be designing a stylish lounge for a party being thrown by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to celebrate the 125th birthday of Hollywood. Because Hollywood movies have always reflected the design styles of the time, each lounge must be inspired by a different style or period. The designers draw cards each with a...

Episode four of Hgtv’s Next Design Star kicked off with the designers assembling for breakfast, where they realize their number is down to just eight, and then they head directly to a quaint suburban neighborhood where they meet up with mentor David Bromstad. David explains that this week it’s an indoor/outdoor challenge and they’ll be split into two teams to work on two adjacent homes. The homes have identical floor plans (open living/dining room), and the backyard of each home features a pool surrounded by lots of concrete. Each team will have the assistance of a handyman.
Using what was, I’m sure, a method of completely random selection, the producers have pre-assigned the teams. Kris and Miera, who got along so splendidly in last week’s challenge are with Danielle and Rachel in the Nitzkin home, while across the street are Hilari and Stanley along with Britany and Mikel,...

After the first two episodes of Hgtv’s Next Design Star, a few of my buddies were chatting about the show and thought it would be fun to have more people involved, so I e-mailed Dennis Ayers and asked if AfterElton would consider doing short recaps. He said "sure, why don't you do it?" Be careful what you ask for folks.
Dennis said I should assume that most people reading this have watched the show, and to stick with the highlights, which is what I hope to do. If you’re wondering which contestants are on team gay, I don’t know. In the first episode, both Luca and Stanley informed us that they have a wife or girlfriend at home. The other three male contestants, Kris, Mikel and Jordan (who was eliminated last week) didn’t discuss their personal lives in their introductory segments.

All right, stop, decorate and listen. Last night, rapper-turned-home rehabber Vanilla Ice pulled up a chair along Design Star host-mentor David Bromstad and judges Genevieve Gorder and Vern Yip to help weigh-in on the show's always-popular White Room challenge. So we threw a few questions his way just to see if he could still flow like a harpoon.

Karl Sponholtz
Team Gay's Karl Sponholtz is so close to being the next Hgtv Design Star he can smell it – and he got a good whiff of first season winner David Bromstad along the way, too.
"David smells amazing," Sponholtz said about the reality competition show's official mentor. "He loves to hug, and he smells really good when he's doing it."
Sponholtz, a Chicago-based designer for an architecture firm and freelance interior designer, didn't expect to find himself in the final two. Nonetheless, tonight he'll square off against fellow Chicagoan Meg Caswell for the Season Six crown in front of judges Vern Yip, Genevieve Gorder, and design queen Candice Olson.
"Like most people in this field, I was a victim of the recession," Sponholtz told AfterElton.com, "I had a lot of time on my hands, so I dropped off my application on the way to a party. I didn't...

We’re down to the final three contestants on Season 6 of Hgtv Design Star, and trying to decide who I want to win feels akin to staring at three paint chips — “Buttercream,” “Newborn Chick,” and “Lemon Drop” — and thinking, “I guess pretty much any of these would work.” Monday night’s episode found us saying goodbye to Kellie, who lost her mojo on a live episode of The Nate Berkus Show, but whose bigger crime was turning a set of rag rugs into poorly constructed barstool covers. I didn’t get why the judges praised the seats — “it’s a really great color story,...

Drama 1, Design 0. That was the depressing score at the end of Monday night’s episode of Hgtv Design Star, and the worst part was watching the judges pull shenanigans to try to justify their decisions.

After five seasons, the formula for Hgtv's 'Design Star' could get a little stale. Could being the operative word -- thank goodness it didn't!
On tonight's Season 6 premiere (9Pm Et on Hgtv), you'll notice a few show shake-ups -- including a move to Monday nights -- before meeting a new crop of 12 ultra-talented and very diverse designers, including a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader/breast cancer survivor and a five-time Emmy-winning New York TV news reporter.
The judging panel will look the same -- Hgtv mainstays Genevieve Gorder, Candice Olson and Vern Yip are back -- but 'Design Star' has a brand new host and a weekly design mentor who happens to have a very familiar face. Tanika Ray ('Hgtv'd') takes over hosting duties, while David Bromstad, the very first 'Design Star' winner, returns to mentor the current crop of contestants.
