Night has broken into podcasting by picking up a network that works with several top creators. The talent management firm known for repping big names like MrBeast has acquired The Roost, the podcasting network that was formerly part of Warner Bros. Discovery‘s Rooster Teeth brand.
The Roost is home to 47 original shows, including Ethan and Hila Klein‘s H3 Podcast and This Past Weekend with Theo Von. Many of the podcast hosts within The Roost’s network, including Philip DeFranco, Ludwig, and Smosh founders Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla, established themselves on platforms like YouTube before launching audio-forward shows. According to a press release from Night, the 47 Roost shows have combined to pull in 350 million views and 20 million monthly audio downloads.
The terms of Night’s acquisition have not been publicly disclosed, but we do know that the transaction will lead to the establishment of a podcast vertical within the Night ecosystem.

Paramount Pictures hosted a ‘Friends & Family’ screening for its new Johnny Knoxville-starrer Sweet Dreams at L.A.’s Laemmle Royal on April 1. Even with a handful of comedians in the building and a date that coincided with April Fool’s Day, the world premiere of filmmaker Lije Sarki’s recovery-centered softball dramedy was no joke.
The scene mirrored much larger Hollywood premieres as members of the starry cast and their friends (Anderson .Paak, Bobby Lee, Lil Dicky) mingled with movie stars (Josh Brolin, Shia Labeouf). Guests took advantage of a red carpet complete with a veteran Tinseltown photographer (Todd Williamson) while others waited in long lines simply to get into the Laemmle (an overflow theater was added to accommodate the number of RSVPs).
Three days later, Sarki was still soaking it in. “It’s wild to me to have that much support,” said the filmmaker over coffee on the...

"You got 10 guys that need this place." Paramount has revealed an official trailer for a sports comedy called Sweet Dreams, a new film directed by the producer of sleeper hit The Peanut Butter Falcon previously. Opening in theaters in April this spring to enjoy. This fresh new comedy is a wild journey of second chances. Forced into rehab, Morris agrees to coach a misfit softball team of recovering addicts from his own house to prove that everyone, despite their past, can hit a home run. And maybe he will get his own life back on track, too. Johnny Knoxville stars as Morris, with an ensemble cast featuring Mo Amer, GaTa, Bobby Lee, Theo Von, Brian Van Holt, Jonnie Park, Shakewell, Adam Faison, plus Jay Mohr & Kate Upton. This doesn't look like it has the most original script, but it still does seem quite wholesome and amusing in an obnoxiously entertaining way.

It’s been a strange few weeks for Saturday Night Live. Two weeks ago, during a night hosted by Madame Web actress Dakota Johnson, cast members Bowen Yang and Sarah Sherman distanced themselves from Dave Chappelle when the transphobic comedian crashed SNL’s goodbye segment at show’s end. Then, last week, the show laundered Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley’s racist Civil War denialism. Now, America’s premier sketch-comedy series has decided to welcome Shane Gillis to host.
Back in 2019, SNL announced that Gillis would be joining the cast of the show.

Turning Point USA — the far-right, Christian nationalist group run by Charlie Kirk — is kicking off its annual AmericaFest in Phoenix on Saturday. Tpusa bills AmericaFest as a bash for “like-minded” conservatives to celebrate “the greatest country in the world, America.”
But in addition to patriotism, many of the gala’s headliners appear to be of like mind about something much darker: a distrust, distaste, or outright hatred of Jewish people. The celebration comes on the heels of Kirk himself having been called out by prominent conservatives for creating “an anti-Semite problem” for the right.

Taylor Swift is celebrating her newfound status as Spotify’s Global Top Artist with a surprise of her own: The massively popular singer-songwriter has just officially released the previously hard-to-find fan favorite song “You’re Losing Me.”
The song, now widely available on streaming services, is the latest of Swift’s “from the vault” releases – tracks that didn’t make her official studio albums. “You’re Losing Me,” which Swift co-wrote with producer Jack Antonoff, was initially released last May only on the “Late Night Edition” CD of Swift’s 2022 album Midnights and in a digital version exclusively at her web store.
This morning, Swift posted on X/Twitter, “Um ok this is unreal?? I just wanted to say to anyone who listened to my music this year, anywhere in the world, thank you. Getting named Spotify’s Global Top Artist in 2023 is truly the best birthday/holiday gift you could’ve given me.

If the film and television industries have been challenged like never before in a year of double strikes, in the world of comedy, the story is very different.
In truth, stand-up has never been bigger, with one story after another rolling out of comedians setting records for attendance and viewership. Take Nate Bargatze, for example, who earlier this year set an Amazon streaming record with his special Hello World, before going on to sell a record number of tickets to an April show at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, and bringing SNL its highest-rated episode of the season. Or Matt Rife, a young up-and-comer with 10+ years under his belt, who hit the upper echelons of comedy seemingly overnight after blowing up on TikTok, selling out a global tour encompassing some 600,000 tickets in less than 48 hours, before going on to land his own forthcoming Netflix special, Matt Rife: Natural Selection. Forget the clichés about the Vegas residency being a déclassé prelude to retirement. Since 2003, when Céline Dion began her $681.3 million residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, talent has been clamoring for coveted spots on Vegas stages. Chart toppers who could fill arenas across the country are setting up shop in Vegas to take advantage of state-of-the-art venues such as Dolby Live at Park MGM or the new Resorts World Theatre. Among the megastars with recent runs are Silk Sonic, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Usher, whose kinetic show was a celebrity magnet, attracting the likes of Tom Holland and Zendaya.
But with all of the above moving on, who will take their place as must-see resident artists? The most obvious — or at least most imminent — candidate is U2, whose 25-date show, U2:uv Achtung Baby Live at Sphere, debuts Sept. 29 at the 20,000-seat venue, the most capacious to ever host a residency.

Kast Media‘s shady dealings have earned it the ire of creators, and a lawsuit could soon follow. Investigative YouTuber Coffeezilla took a deep dive into Kast’s financials after comedian Theo Von claimed that the podcast network defrauded its partners out of $4 million.
The official website for Kast Media describes it as “one of the fastest growing and most exciting podcast networks and publishers in podcasting.” Kast built its library by making deals with comedians (including Von and Whitney Cummings), athletes (Brandon Schaub), and writers (Jim Cornette).
In July, word began to spread about Kast’s financial woes. Cornette revealed that the network owed him payments and was threatening to declare bankruptcy. Von threw fuel on the fire in September by raising his own nonpayment claims. He said that Kast owed its partners “up to $4 million” in total.
Just wanted to warn folks about @colinpthomson. This man defrauded our podcast and others.

“Workaholics” and “The Righteous Gemstones” star Adam DeVine called out Variety, saying the trade magazine misrepresented his comments about Marvel movies in a podcast interview.
While promoting his latest Netflix movie “The Out-Laws” on Theo Von’s “This Past Weekend” podcast, DeVine gave his theory about why there have been fewer theatrical comedies in recent years, crediting the shift to audiences expecting to see “$200 million” movies in theaters. DeVine blamed Marvel and “superhero movies” for creating that expectation.
That interview led to Variety posting an article titled “Adam Devine Says Marvel Movies ‘Ruined Comedies’: They ‘Make Those Movies Kind of Funny,’ But ‘It’s Not Real Comedy.'” A social media post promoting the article read, “Adam Devine: ‘You watch comedies nowadays and you’re like, this is not a f—ing comedy…My theory: I think Marvel ruined it.'”

Los Angeles, Aug 8 (Ians) Actor Adam Devine has shared his theory that Marvel movies and other superhero films killed the traditional Hollywood comedy.
The ‘Workaholics’ and ‘Pitch Perfect’ actor recently appeared on Theo Von’s ‘This Past Weekend’ podcast during his press tour for Netflix’s ‘The Out-Laws’ and shared his theory, reports Variety.
The actor noted that because Marvel movies rely so much on humour they ended up becoming Hollywood’s new de facto comedy films.
“You watch comedies nowadays and you’re like, this is not a f****** comedy,” Devine said.
“Where are the jokes? Where are the bits? There are still good (comedy) shows, but movie comedy, it’s hard. My theory: I think Marvel ruined it. I feel like superhero movies ruined comedies because you go to the theatre and you expect to watch something that cost $200 million to make, and comedy movies aren’t that.

Adam Devine has a bold theory about the effect that Marvel films had on the general audience and said that “superhero movies ruined comedies.”
While making an appearance on This Past Weekend with Theo Von, Devine talked about the quality of comedies in Hollywood. The Righteous Gemstones star said that although TV comedies are still good, he can’t say the same about movie comedies.
“My theory is I think, I think like Marvel ruined it,” Devine said. “I feel like superhero movies kind of ruined comedies. Because people go to the theater and you expect to watch something that costs $200 million to make and comedy movies aren’t that.”
The Pitch Perfect alum noted that moviegoers are stuck in a predicament about where to spend their money opting for a bigger budget production where you get more bang for your buck.

Roseanne Barr‘s latest rant is likely to further her isolation in Hollywood.
In a new interview with podcaster Theo Von, Barr proclaimed, “Nobody died in the Holocaust, that’s the truth.”
“Six million Jews should die right now ’cause they cause all the problems in the world,” she said.
Von asked her if she was half Jewish to which she responded that she is “all Jewish.”

The antisemitic comments were made after she said sarcastically that President Joe Biden won the 2020 election. Barr has been a strong supporter of former President Donald Trump in the past.
Von appeared confused and asked, “So it wasn’t rigged?”
“Of course not,” she replied. “Thirty-six counties have 81 million [votes] and that’s the truth and don’t you dare say anything. That’s where you’ll be off YouTube, Facebook,...

WME has hired Carly Frankel as an agent in the digital department and Samantha Korn as an agent in the talent department focused on comedy, Variety has learned exclusively.
Frankel will focus on the agency’s podcasting business, including the comedy, personal development, and narrative nonfiction verticals. Prior to joining WME, she was senior development executive at Wondery, having originally joined the company in 2019. In that role, she worked across creative and business development to identify original podcast concepts and to bring them to production.
She was previously at Wondery where she most recently served as a senior development executive, working across creative and business development to both identify hit original podcast concepts and bring them to production. Following Wondery’s acquisition by Amazon Music in 2021, Frankel was instrumental in designing the company’s consolidated greenlight and deal protocols for original programming. “Unvaxxed Sperm” reads the poster held aloft by a woman standing outside the theater, and you know you’re in the right place: Joe Rogan’s new comedy club mecca. On Austin’s historic Sixth Street, Comedy Mothership enjoyed its opening night after two-and-a-half years of development.
Comedy Mothership is the comedian and podcaster’s effort to launch what he’s described as an ideal venue for comics and an effort to terraform the Texas capitol into a major live comedy hub. When tickets for the opening week of shows went on sale (for a surprisingly reasonable $40 per person), they sold out within minutes. Tickets are being re-sold online for $500.
“I’m drunk and on mushrooms in my new club!” exclaimed Rogan while wearing a rather odd Obi-Wan-like sweater. “This is as high as I’ve ever been onstage. I need to connect with this moment … You can’t fire me from my own club,...

In the niche world of comedy touring, Mike Berkowitz has always been “the guy.” Over his 21-year career, the agent has been a go-to dealmaker in the live entertainment space, diversifying the income of star clients and launching digital crossovers.
Berkowitz, who co-heads WME’s comedy group, first distinguished himself by tapping into the lucrative college market. He also blazed a trail for new acts to reach stadium-level stardom in a landscape where only the likes of Eddie Murphy and George Carlin once played.
The sector has exploded in the past decade, and Berkowitz has been at the forefront. In 2022, he booked and shepherded production on Bill Burr’s 31 million-grossing tour, as well as Kevin Hart and Chris Rock’s co-headlining shows. He sent out John Mulaney (50.2 million) and Amy Schumer (9 mil- lion), the latter for her first tour in five years. Next, he’ll map out dates for Ramy Youssef,...

Apple TV Plus set Chris Miller and Phil Lord’s “The Afterparty” for a January 2022 debut and released a teaser for the upcoming murder mystery.
The show is set at a high school reunion, and each of the eight episodes retells the events of the night through a different character’s perspective — and therefore unique visual style.
“This is one of the most surprising, original and fun projects we’ve ever made,” said Lord and Miller. “Our goal was to tell a comedic whodunit story in a new and exciting way. By giving each episode its own unique style of storytelling, we were able to make what feels like eight distinctly different but interconnected films that highlight how everyone’s personal perspective and biases shape how they see the world.”
The show stars Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson, Zoë Chao, Ben Schwartz, Ike Barinholtz, Ilana Glazer, Jamie Demetriou and Dave Franco.
