Between the sounds of striking pins and returning bowling balls, patrons at Just-in-Time Recreation, a bowling alley in Lewiston, Maine, had a tough time recognizing gunshots over the din Wednesday night. A shooter took advantage of the confusion, killing 18 people there and at Schemengees Bar & Grill nearby. Seven people died at the bowling alley, eight more died at the bar, and three died after reaching the hospital. The shooter also injured an additional 13 people.
David St. Pierre, police chief of the 40,000-person city, commented, “This is truly a tragedy that goes beyond comprehension.

Last year, LinkedIn launched its first Creator Accelerator as part of a 25 million investment in its community. Now, that program’s second class has been announced, and it includes some online video luminaries.
Jim Louderback, who previously served as the CEO of VidCon and the Revision3 network, will take part in the initiative. He’ll be joined by Night Media CEO Reed Duchscher, Mashable founder Pete Cashmore, Twitch Head of Games Bill Young, and Avi Gandhi, who took over as Patreon’s Head of Creator Partnerships last year.
In total, 120 creators will benefit from LinkedIn’s support through the Creator Accelerator’s workshops, meetings, and sessions. That’s an increase from the 100 creators who made up the program’s initial cohort. Those inaugural Creator Accelerator participants have used the tutelage they receive to expand their presence on LinkedIn. Jonathan Javier, who spoke to us about his approach to the professional platform earlier this year,...

John Sacret Young, the author and producer best known for his work on “China Beach” and “The West Wing,” died on June 3 after a 10-month battle with brain cancer. He was 75.
Young co-created “China Beach” with William Broyles Jr., serving as executive producer and showrunner on the much-lauded show about American combat nurses during the Vietnam War. Young received five Emmy and four Writers Guild Award nominations for his work on the ABC drama series, which ran from 1988-91, with star Dana Delany receiving two Emmy trophies and co-star Marg Helgenberger winning one. Young served as a mentor to many young crew members and took pride in elevating women’s careers behind the camera despite the overt and implicit sexism of the time.
He worked on an array of other projects after “China Beach,” including “Keys,” “VR.5,” “Orleans,” “Thanks of a Grateful Nation,” “Sirens,” “King of the World” and “Level...

PBS Distribution and Walter Presents are set to bring Belgian crime drama “Professor T” to audiences across the U.S. “Professor T” will be the second international title distributed under the Walter’s Choice banner, the partnership between PBS Distribution, the home video arm of PBS, and streaming service Walter Presents, which brings non-English language drama to PBS’ regional network of broadcast stations.
The first season of “Professor T” is set to air on PBS broadcast stations across the U.S. from May 2. The 13-part series will also be available via members-only streaming service PBS Passport. The announcement follows the introduction of the new Walter’s Choice brand in February, which launched with Swedish crime thriller “Modus.”
Bill Young, vice president of television programming for Kera, the PBS station serving northern Texas, said viewers were already “really responding” to “Modus.” “They will now have the opportunity to follow it up with ‘Professor T,...

Dystopia! What a place to be. Well, except when people are mulched to feed an over populated society (Soylent Green) or killed at the age of 30 to control it (Logan’s Run); and in the case of Turkey Shoot (1982), hunted for sport by society’s elite. Come to think of it, Dystopia is kind of a bummer.
Released in its native Australia in October, Turkey Shoot wouldn’t see the light of day in the U.S. until September of ’83 under the title Escape 2000. Both titles work; the former playing into the more lurid elements, while the latter highlights the cut rate sci-fi angle. And it’s the swirling combination of the two that gives this sucker its punch. Turkey Shoot is A class exploitation with a down under smile.
