Ruth Stone, an award-winning poet, died Nov. 19 in Vermont of natural causes, her daughter Phoebe told the AP Thursday (Nov. 24). Her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were at her side.
Stone was lauded as one of the country's best poets in her later years, winning the National Book Award in 2002 at the age of 87 for "In the Next Galaxy" and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2009 for "What Love Comes To."
At age 19, Ruth Perkins married and moved from her Roanoka, Va. home to Urbana, Ill., where she studied at the University of Illinois. There she met Walter STone, a grad student and poet who became the love of her life. She divorced her first husband, married Walter and had two daughters. She also had a daughter from her first marriage. But later on in their marriage, Walter hung himself during a sabbatical in England, which Ruth never really got over.

Stone became a prolific writer in the last 20 years of her life and won the National Book Award in 2002 for In the Next Galaxy. She was also a finalist for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize. The American poet also landed National Book Critics Circle award and two Guggenheim honours during her career.
Stone's personal life was touched by sadness - her second husband and the love of her life, Walter Stone, hanged himself during a vacation in England. She recalled seeing his dead body in the poem Turn Your Eyes Away.
Among her many beloved works were American Milk and Simplicity.
