When Italian horror comes to mind, it’s the unholy trifecta of Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci, and Mario and Lamberto Bava that dominate the discussion. However, Michele Soavi is another essential – albeit underrated – Italian horror savant from the ‘80s and ‘90s who cut his teeth as Argento and Fulci’s apprentice, before ascending to become their peer through formative films like StageFright and Dellamorte Dellamore (aka Cemetery Man). Soavi has a flair and appreciation for immersive and complex camera visuals, intimidating antagonists, and gruesome gore, all of which are on display in the director’s most polarizing film, The Church, which now celebrates its 35th anniversary.
This cinematic achievement began as Demons 3, the third film in Argento and Lamberto Bava’s popular supernatural horror series. However, the horror sequel soon pivoted into an original project early on in its production after Bava walked and Soavi took over and completely rewrote the script.

In the build-up to the release of Evil Dead Rise (read our review right Here) last year, Evil Dead franchise rights holders Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Rob Tapert let it be known that they were already looking forward to producing more entries in the series, with Campbell revealing they were hoping to make a new sequel / spin-off every two or three years. It looks like they’re on track to do just that, as Deadline reports that Sébastien Vaniček has been hired direct the next entry in the franchise.
After spending a decade making short films, Vaniček made his feature directorial debut on the French horror film Vermin, a.k.a. Infested, which premiered last year and showed viewers what happens when “residents of a rundown French apartment building battle against an army of deadly, rapidly reproducing spiders.” As Deadline notes, “the film won Best Picture and Best Director...

Horror fans will recognize Adam Marcus as the director of Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday and the co-writer of Texas Chainsaw, two divisive but oft-discussed entries in their respective franchises. He recently returned to the genre to helm Secret Santa, a holiday horror-comedy streaming exclusively on Screambox.
The first installment in our three-part interview with the raconteur focuses on Jason Goes to Hell, currently celebrating its 30th anniversary, along with the upcoming retrospective documentary Hearts of Darkness: The Making of the Final Friday and a potential Creighton Duke-inspired spin-off.
“People who don’t like Jason Goes to Hell are rabid. They’re not your average haters; they’re knives-out from the second you meet them,” Marcus says with a chuckle. “When people go, ‘That’s not canon,’ I’m like, ‘No, bitches, it’s canon! I made Jason a Deadite. I did that!'” he beams.

It was heartbreaking when the copyright dispute between original Friday the 13th producer/director Sean S. Cunningham and screenwriter Victor Miller came up and brought any further development of the extremely cool Friday the 13th video game to a screeching halt. Now here’s another franchise video game heartbreaker: the folks at Saber Interactive have announced that they won’t be developing any new content for Evil Dead: The Game, and plans to bring the game to Nintendo Switch have been abandoned.
Here’s the announcement:

No information was given on exactly why Saber had decided to set aside any further development of the game. It would be odd if there are licensing issues, because the rights to the overall Evil Dead franchise seem to be rather clear cut: they’re owned by franchise creator Sam Raimi, producer Rob Tapert, and star Bruce Campbell.

Activision is once again dipping into horror for the upcoming Halloween season with “The Haunting” for Call of Duty. A few years ago, we got Ghostface dropping into Black Ops Cold War and Warzone. And coming up on this year’s Halloween update, fans will be treated to crossovers from the likes of Spawn, Evil Dead, Hellsing, and more!
The whole thing kicks off after September 27, when Season 6 arrives for Modern Warfare II and Call of Duty: Warzone. The skins will also be available for Modern Warfare III when it launches.
The Haunting event for Call of Duty officially begins at mid-season, which includes Halloween-themed maps, modes, and events. That includes four new Multiplayer maps, and a Battle Pass “stocked with devilishly entertaining new Operators and Weapon Blueprints, and more.”

I’m beginning to think that, cinematically at least, the Wendigo hit its peak back in 1995 with Frostbiter: Wrath of the Wendigo, an absolutely batshit mix of folklore, Evil Dead-style mayhem, and stop-motion monsters. Despite some decent films on the subject like The Retreat there’s yet to be a definitive screen version of this creature from Native American folklore.
The latest take on the myth is titled, aptly enough, The Wendigo and it begins somewhere in the woods of North Carolina as YouTuber Logan calls out the creature’s name hoping to catch it on camera for his livestream. He gets more than he bargained for and gets dragged off while, in true found-footage fashion, his camera glitches.

UK-French sales agent, distribution and production company Alief has announced that the Ted Raimi led psychological thriller, Failure!, will have its World Premiere at FrightFest on August 28th 2023. Alief picked up worldwide rights at the Cannes Film Festival in May after Failure! made its debut at the Fantastic Pavillion. To mark the occasion, a teaser trailer and poster has been released. Failure! follows James who has a big debt with the bank and is given one hour to choose between financial ruin or murder in order to protect his family. As the hour progresses he finds his home and phone invaded by multiple characters pulling him in different directions, gradually adding to his distress and his unravelling. But who is real and who isn’t? As well as Raimi, the film also stars Merrick McCartha (Senior Year), Melissa Diaz (Ruthless), John Paul Medrano (Seven Days) and Daniel Kuhlman (Voodoo MacBeth) and Noel Douglas Orput.

This post contains light spoilers for Evil Dead Rise.
Since the late 1980s, one of the key characteristics of a budding cinephile was the ability to explain the relationship between 1981’s The Evil Dead and 1987’s Evil Dead II. Where the first movie introduced the world to director Sam Raimi‘s dynamic style, as well as star Bruce Campbell‘s unique charisma, its independent production meant that it only rose to the level of a cult hit. To expand the audience, Evil Dead II opens not by picking up where the first left off, with Campbell’s beleaguered Ash Williams potentially possessed, but by remaking the first movie, at least in its opening act.
Whatever explanation fans gave to smooth over the transition between the first two movies, it set a precedent for everything that followed. Evil Dead would be about gore and Three Stooges gags, not strict continuity. 1992’s...

Lee Cronin is a name horror fans are about to become very, very familiar with, and most likely quite fond of, as he is the director behind the upcoming "Evil Dead Rise." The first film in the franchise since 2013's "Evil Dead," the new movie premiered recently at SXSW and the buzz has been nothing shy of excellent (read our review here). Even though Bruce Campbell is not suiting back up as Ash Williams, the response indicates that Cronin has managed to bring the series back to life in a big, bad way.
Cronin is not only making the first movie in this franchise in a full decade, but he's also taking the action largely out of the woods and into the city -- something these movies haven't seen before. The film focuses on a pair of sisters, played by Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan, who reunite after being estranged...

“Make sure there’s scary Deadites, and use the book.”
When Lee Cronin assumed writing/directing duties for Evil Dead Rise, those were Sam Raimi’s requests. Of course, there were other ingredients for the fifth installment of The Evil Dead horror franchise—launched in 1981 by director Raimi, producer Rob Tapert, and Bruce Campbell—such as blood, gore, chainsaws, and boomsticks.
But then the Irish filmmaker and lifelong Evil Dead fan reveals to us he had his own mission: “To bring you in, wind you up, and then punch you in the face for an hour.”
Handpicked by Raimi, who was impressed by Cronin’s short film “Ghost Train” and first feature, The Hole in the Ground, the director began filming Evil Dead Rise in New Zealand in June 2021. With all three serving as producers, Tapert joined the shoot on the ground while Raimi and Campbell supported his vision from afar.

After playing Evil Dead franchise hero Ash Williams on screen for around forty years, spanning three feature films and three seasons of the TV series Ash vs. Evil Dead, Bruce Campbell formally retired from the role, saying he’s not physically able to handle the action sequences any longer. But he is still willing to voice the character, as evident from the recently released Evil Dead: The Game… and just over a year ago, he said would gladly provide Ash’s voice if there were ever to be an Evil Dead animated series. Franchise creator Sam Raimi has let it be known that he wants to continue making Evil Dead projects with Campbell, and he must have heard Campbell’s answer to the animated series question, because our friends at Bloody Disgusting report that Campbell has confirmed they are “actively pursuing” the idea of an Evil Dead animated series!

The "Evil Dead" franchise has accrued a lot of famous objects over the years, and the upcoming "Evil Dead Rise" looks like it's bringing back all of the classics. We already knew that "Evil Dead Rise" was going to focus heavily on the Necronomicon Ex Mortis -- the Book of the Dead -- and the red-band trailer featured a great glimpse of new hero Beth (Lily Sullivan) wielding a bloody chainsaw, but we now have evidence of a boomstick, too! Empire Magazine revealed an image of Beth with a double-barrel shotgun alongside their interview with director Lee Cronin back in December, and it looks perfect. The movie looks like it's tonally right between the original "The Evil Dead" from 1981 and its 2013 reboot, and having all of the tools of the Deadite-trashing trade around is enough to make any fan start drooling. Seriously, can't it be April already?

Earlier today, we saw the trailer for Evil Dead Rise, the latest official entry in the Evil Dead franchise. Now we’ve gotten our hands on the trailer for writer/director Fabián Forte’s’s film Legions, which is described as being “an unabashed love letter to Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead series”! You can check it out in the embed above.
Legions has been enjoying a successful festival run in recent months, and now XYZ Films is preparing to give the film a VOD release in North America on January 19th.
Said to be “gory, hilarious, and heartwarming”, Legions has the following synopsis: A powerful sorcerer, Antonio Poyju, is locked away in an asylum, and wastes away in his imprisonment as evil, demonic forces take control of Argentina. If Antonio can escape the psychiatric hospital and find his daughter, Helena, their combined strength could save Argentina… but Helena has forgotten her powers.

Horror and television have always been a bit of an awkward fit. What’s scary and what’s bingeable are often mutually exclusive. Horror requires that you suspend your disbelief and the longer it asks of your attention span, the higher the risk that the tension wanes.
Still, in the modern streaming era, there are plenty of horror TV shows that get the spooky job done. Gathered on Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, HBO Max, Apple TV+, Paramount+, and more are some truly great streaming options to elevate the heart rate. Here we’ve compiled the very best of the best. Despite lacking a cool older relative or friend to show me the ropes, my early exposure to the horror genre was fairly conventional. I started with the big slasher franchises then worked my way through other genre classics before seeking out increasingly obscure titles — a journey that continues to this day. After binging through Halloween, Friday the 13th, and A Nightmare on Elm Street, I soon discovered Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead trilogy.
Well before the remake or Ash vs. Evil Dead, I distinctly recall reading about unofficial Evil Dead installments on web forums to sate my appetite while waiting for the franchise’s long-gestating fourth entry. There’s the La Casa series in Italy, wherein unrelated movies were marketed as Evil Dead sequels, and Japan’s Evil Dead Trap, whose similarities to Raimi’s work begin and end with the title. But the one movie that always eluded me was The Japanese Evil Dead.

With September just days away, this week is a bit of a “quiet before the storm” sort of week, as a ton of new horror releases are coming hot and heavy in the next two months.
This week, however, is relatively quiet, but that doesn’t mean we’re not getting any new horror this week. In fact, we’re getting Five brand new horror movies in the coming days.
That includes a brand new original from the Bd-powered Screambox, not to mention the theatrical re-release of a horror classic…. in Three Dimensions for the first time.
Here’s all the new horror arriving August 30 – September 4, 2022!
First up, Bloody Disgusting is excited to debut the brand new Screambox Original PussyCake, a gore-fest from Argentina that’s now streaming exclusively on Screambox!
