Creative talents’ worries have been in focus this summer in Hollywood amid the dual writers and actors strikes, along with much debate about whether AI could replace artists and upset production. Management consulting firm Bain & Co. is signaling there could be a less contentious future though, which it outlines in a new report entitled “Tech in Content Production: Will AI Kill the Video Star?”
The authors, Nicole Magoon, Andre James, David Sanderson and Imogen Rey, even offer an encouraging spoiler in the subtitle: “It might help them.”
The key to that is the Bain team’s clear recommendation on whether AI should be explored as a replacement for writers, actors and visual artists. “Studios should spurn that path, but they can use technology to reduce budgets by pulling more of the production process up front and streamlining production and post-production,” they appeal to entertainment companies. “The savings will enable studios...

The head of digital at Maxus is to leave the agency’s Sydney office.
Tom Kelshaw, a well respected practitioner who joined the GroupM media agency in January 2010, is to move from Sydney to Singapore to take on a regional role for the young network.
David Gaines, CEO of Maxus Australia, called the move a “double edged sword” for the agency, which some months ago saw head of search David Sanderson take the same path as Kelshaw to Singapore to be regional head of search.
Gaines told Mumbrella in a statement: “In Australia, there are key parts of the Maxus product we are building that have become part of the template for the agency, not just regionally but globally too.”
“Tom’s been one of the critical parts of that talent mix and increasingly we are working on how we can use his skill set to help us accelerate digital integration in our other offices.

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:
The Conspirator – Robin Wright, James McAvoy, Tom Wilkinson
Rio – Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, George Lopez
Scream 4 – Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette
Movie of the Week
Scream 4
The Stars: Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette
The Plot: Ten years have passed, and Sidney (Campbell), who has put herself back together thanks in part to her writing, is visited again by the Ghostface Killer.
The Buzz: Wes Craven returns to the franchise that single-handedly rejuvenated the horror industry. Lots of pretty girls run around, most of them get killed, and repeat. But it’s all good fun (somehow). I enjoyed the first two films, but thought the third was pretty blah. I think enough time has passed though to make this a potentially smart beating of a dead horse.
Every Friday we’ll have new reviews of the latest films.

The design blog's 1-Hour Design Challenge focuses on earthquake relief.
Earthquakes are design problems, and while more and more architects have been offering their support to rebuilding efforts in Haiti and Chile (see roundups of some of them here and here), Core77 opened it up last week as one of its famous 1-Hour Design Challenges. Well, the results are in, and they're awesome.
Dan Ostrowski's winning LifeTent (top) is a backpack-based, pop-up shelter, complete with Gps tracking and an ingenious rainwater-gathering system. Thomas Valcke's Devil in the Box and Julian Grobe's Bellow Refuge are two takes on an expanding, accordion-like shelter that would be easy to set up and easier to transport. Michael Kilbane's Pop-Out Shelter puts the folded-paper trend to good use. See more great work, and more images, here.
It's a perfect take-down of David Sanderson's outrageous claim, from his editorial in the Guardian on Wednesday, that...
