The César Awards are always the biggest night of the year for French cinema, but the massive award season impact of “Anatomy of a Fall” ensured that this year’s event took on additional importance for Oscar watchers around the globe. When the 49th César Awards took place in Paris on Friday night, all eyes were on Justine Triet and her Palme d’Or-winning film.
Predictably, “Anatomy of a Fall” swept many of the night’s biggest categories. In addition to winning the top prize of Best Film, Triet was honored with Best Director and shared Best Screenplay with her partner Arthur Harari. Stars Sandra Hüller and Swann Arlaud also won Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor, respectively.

Thomas Cailley’s supernatural drama “The Animal Kingdom” and Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or winner “Anatomy of a Fall” are leading the race at the 49th Cesar Awards with 12 and 11 nominations, respectively.
Triet’s movie, which just garnered an impressive five Oscar nominations, and “The Animal Kingdom,” which opened at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard and won a prize, will vie for top Cesar awards including best director and film.
“The Animal Kingdom” is an ambitious film that marks a departure from France’s cinema tradition of social realism. It’s both a creature-filled dystopia and a father-and-son drama, weaving some contemporary concerns over the future of mankind. It’s produced by Pierre Guyard at Nord Ouest Films and co-produced by Artemis.

In a story released earlier, Mma superstar Quinton “Rampage” Jackson said he has no plans to return to Tna wrestling, and had harsh words for the company. It seems as if his Mma rivals “King” Mo Lawal and Tito Ortiz don’t feel the same way, however, as Ortiz says that he plans to make a return to the company this fall.
Ortiz, who debuted a year ago in the company without ever competing, was brought in to build his Mma fight with Jackson, which never happened due to a neck injury from Ortiz. However, Ortiz says he’d read to make a return, following a win inside the cage over Alexander Shlemenko. “I’m actually returning August or September. I’ll be coming back to Tna and doing some stuff. For every hardened member of the WWE Universe who says the company must “make new stars,” the “New Reality” era has (for the most part) solidly sucked in doing so. It’s not as if the company isn’t trying. Since 2013, well over a dozen fresh faces have debuted in WWE, with varying levels of success. Of late, the success-to-(early) failure ratio has been less than ideal. More than anything, this lack of success should cause a period of awareness to ensue regarding what makes the New Reality era different on a plethora of levels.
In covering what makes this era different, as well as ideas to make it a success, here’s seven ways that World Wrestling Entertainment can salvage its latest new talent initiative.

A lot of people have been talking about Benjamin Morris’ 538 piece, “Are Pro Wrestlers Dying at an Unusual Rate?”
Like Morris, I am neither an actuarial scientist nor a demographer. So, our interpretations of the data should be taken with a grain of salt. My results were somewhat different from Morris’ due to a difference data set and changes in how we calculated actuarial predictions.
Differences in methodology from Morris
I also used Social Security Actuarial Life Tables, but my “expected mortality rates” for the age groups were not the same as Morris’. For each wrestler, I calculated what their age would have been as of today. Then, based on gender, I looked up the number of lives (out of 100,000) that were expected to still be alive and converted that to a percentage. His analysis looked at wrestlers who were on 20+ WWF PPVs through 2002. I went with a...

On the heels of WrestleMania 30, WWE will be taking it to the extreme at their sixth annual Extreme Rules pay-per-view on May 4 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Given the PG aspirations of WWE in recent years, however, the action won’t nearly be as “extreme” as when the term was coined in the more violent, hard-hitting 1990s.
WWE considers gratuitous chairshots and bloodletting too extreme for TV nowadays, but such excesses were a necessary evil when they first rose to notoriety, insists a man who personified the era.
“Extreme rules, hardcore wrestling — whatever they want to call it — was born out of a necessity to survive,” said the hardcore legend Terry Funk, who revolutionized the business. “In Ecw, hardcore wrestling wasn’t done just for the fun of it. It was done for a purpose, for a reason. And for me, it was done to exist and produce a revenue for my family.

Welcome to this week’s Raw write-up.
Tonight’s show opens with John Cena’s music playing and him making his way to the ring to his usual reaction, the kids cheer, the rest of the fans boo. We see a replay of Cena pinning Orton in the main event of last week’s Raw. Cena poses for the fans before speaking. He talks about the upcoming Elimination Chamber PPV next Sunday. It’s the usual “shout and whisper” Cena promo to which most fans scold with boo’s. Cena says that he has headlined WrestleMania many times and plans to headline, against Batista, again this year. He insults Randy Orton but gets booed for it. Cena mentions Bryan, and the fans chant yet. I guess he has to get a pop somehow. Cena predicts that there will be a new WWE World Champion after the Elimination Chamber match on Sunday.

When most wrestling fans think of New Orleans these days, they think of WrestleMania 30, coming up on April 6 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
What many younger fans may not realize is that New Orleans was one of the hottest cities in the old Mid-South territory back in the early ’80s, with Ted Dibiase, “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan, Junkyard Dog, King Kong Bundy, Jake “The Snake” Roberts, Kamala, Steve “Dr. Death” Williams, and announcer Jim Ross being among the prominent names who left an indelible mark on professional wrestling.
With athletic, bruising matches orchestrated by no-nonsense promoter “Cowboy” Bill Watt, Mid-South garnered national attention for its evocative storytelling and Superdome Extravaganzas, featuring the Road Warriors, the Midnight Express, the Von Erichs, Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes, and Andre the Giant.

We are now at the Raw following TLC 2013, a show that ended with Randy Orton defeating John Cena to become the new, unified and undisputed WWE World Heavyweight Champion.
The WWE roster are on the stage as the show opens, and Triple H and Stephanie McMahon stand in the ring together before announcing their new champion, Randy Orton. Orton comes out to loud boo’s from the fans. He walks past the roster and the camera focuses on Daniel Bryan and John Cena, who stare at Orton sternly. Triple H and Stephanie grin at Randy as he enters the ring, obviously forgetting last week when they beat the snot out of each other again. Orton talks about how no-one had faith in him but he proved everyone wrong. We’ve heard this promo, from numerous guys, before, so it isn’t really that interesting. In fact, it’s white noise at this point.

As we begin the month of October, I fondly remember Halloween Havoc, WCW’s annual fall extravaganza. Halloween Havoc was the one pay-per-view I looked forward to every year since it seemed like the company was inventing some weird gimmick. Some of them worked very well (The Thunderdome or Thunder Cage before the threat of lawsuit), others had mixed results (Spin the Wheel, Make the Deal) and others made me cringe (Chamber of Horrors, Sumo Monster Truck Match). Today, I want to talk about the one Halloween Havoc that didn’t have some weird or insane gimmick match: Halloween Havoc 1990 with the tagline “Terror Rules the Ring”. The card emanated from The Uic Pavilion in Chicago, a location that had held two previous Nwa PPVs: Starrcade 1987 and The Chi-Town Rumble.

WWE has access to a vast library of professional wrestling’s past, with promotions like Awa, Stampede, Ecw, WCW and many more. This release is the WWE’s delving into the history of Mid South Wrestling, a territorial promotion based in Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Arkansas.
Mid South is often referred to by old time fans and performers as one of the most influential leagues in wrestling’s history. Promoted by Bill Watts through the end of the 70’s and the first half of the 80’s, Mid South featured names like Ted Dibiase, The Junkyard Dog, Andre the Giant, “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan, Magnum Ta and “Dr Death” Steve Williams. Where as other wrestling promotions had slow and traditional in-ring work or cartoon style performances, Mid South featured a more realistic and exciting style of wrestling that featured characters that appeared more believable.

Albuquerque, N.M. -- Defiantly waving an Arizona state flag, the self-described American patriot leaps into an octagon-shaped ring amid blaring music and loud boos from an overwhelmingly Latino audience, who hold aloft signs in Spanish supporting his masked Mexican opponents.
"My name is Rj Brewer and I'm from Phoenix, Arizona," the wrestler proclaims in a video of a recent match provided by the promoter. Taunts from inside the arena get louder.
He proceeds to rail against Mexican beer and to demand that people speak English. Then he points to the message painted on the backside of his red trunks: "SB1070" – a reference to Arizona's controversial immigration law. The crowd, some wearing masks of their favorite Mexican wrestlers, shrieks ever louder. He then brags that his "mother," Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, is helping "save" America by pushing policies that limit immigration (he's not really her son).

The Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev ("Elena Gilbert") will be seen on the big screen later this year in Perks Of Being A Wallflower, and now she's added another film role to the roster! According to The Tracking Board, Nina Dobrev will lead an "indie dramady" called Junkyard Dog, which will be directed by her Perks co-star Dylan McDermott, and "the script focuses on the chaotic life in a small town as seen through the eyes of one of its residents." The Tracking Board reports that the film is currently in the preproduction stage, which makes sense since Dobrev is still finishing her work on the remaining episodes of The Vampire Diaries' third season - the finale date for which has recently been set for May 10t ...

Chicago – Fans have been clamoring for a next-gen “Twisted Metal” game since the birth of the PS3 and their most intense nightmares have come true as the franchise finally gets its long-awaited reboot with a successful 2012 reboot. It’s far from a perfect game but it gets the job done as a mayhem-fueled diversion — a fun multiplayer orgy of gasoline and gunfire. It’s nice to have Sweet Tooth back on the gaming scene.
Video Game Rating: 3.5/5.0
The original creative team behind “Twisted Metal,” David Jaffe and Scott Campbell of Eat Sleep Play, have returned the franchise to its roots. Honestly, I hadn’t played a “Tm” game in years but the new version felt instantly familiar with its emphasis on unusual environments, unique weapons, and larger-than-life characters. It might have been tempting to “overly modernize” the franchise given its long time out of the spotlight but there are times...

There are two things that are synonymous with wrestling games: controls that are so difficult only true wrestling fans find them enjoyable and unlockable legendary characters. The folks over at Thq decided why not make a game that presents the best of both worlds to the audience. If you could combine simple moves that even your pet chihuahua can figure out with all the great wrestling heroes since WWE was WWF, you would have a sure fire winner. And, thus Legends of Wrestlemania was born. Play one or two exhibitions matches and you’ll immediately come to love WWE Legends of Wrestlemania. All of the great names are there, including the Ultimate Warrior, Junkyard Dog, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Jake the Snake, Andre the Giant, and of course Hulk Hogan. Sadly. The easy to use controls will make matches quick and painless. Sadly, on further inspection past games two and three,...
