USA Network is finalizing a deal to pick up the drama pilot Peacemakers, starring Tom Berenger, as a series to premiere in the summer, sources said. Peacemakers, a Western cop show, is one of three drama pilots USA greenlighted in August (HR 8/22). Sources said the other two -- Touching Evil, starring Jeffrey Donovan, and Thought Crimes, starring Navi Rawat -- remain strong contenders, with a good chance that one or both of them will be picked up for January launch. Peacemakers, set in 1881, when modern crime-fighting techniques came to the Old West, was created by Rick Ramage and Larry Carroll, written by Ramage and directed by Carroll. Ramage is executive producer, with Carroll co-executive producing.

Building on the success of "Monk" and "The Dead Zone," its new series this summer, USA Network has picked up three drama pilots with an eye for a summer 2003 launch.USA has given orders to "Thought Crimes" from producer-director Jan De Bont, "Peacemakers" from writer-producer Rick Ramage and a project based on Granada Television's British crime series "Touching Evil" from producer Arnold Rifkin. The three pilots have been given cast-contingent pickups, with the casting process on them already under way."These are the best of the batch," said Jeff Wachtel, USA Network executive vp series and longform programming. "They were the ones that both had a strong genre base -- procedural, action -- and were populated with unique, compelling characters. They were the shows that were both attractive to our core audience and compatible with our existing successful series."He said USA hopes to make four pilots this season and, like this year, plans to launch two series next summer. Also eyed for next summer is the cable network's remake of "The Bionic Woman," in development (HR 8/16)."Peacemakers" is a Western cop show set in 1881, when modern crime-fighting techniques invaded the Old West. The 90-minute pilot is written by Ramage (UPN's "Haunted") and award-winning documentary filmmaker Larry Carroll (USA's "Red Skies"). Ramage will serve as executive producer, while Carroll will co-executive produce and may direct the pilot.
