The critics have crawled all over Focus Features/StudioCanal’s Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black like red ants, however, the CinemaScore of B+ (which isn’t far from the Elton John biopic Rocketman at A-) is telling that the fans who showed up weren’t entirely wrought with the film.
For filmmaker Sam Taylor-Johnson, whose directing career blasted to a whole other state of euphoria with the feature take of bestselling novel Fifty Shades of Grey (near $570M worldwide), her intent was to see Winehouse’s life through the singer’s eyes.
You can listen to our conversation below:
Singers’ estates can be notorious: If Hollywood tries to make a warts-all movie, well then they’ll just hold the song clearances hostage and bar the film from being made. Back to Black producer Alison Owen already had the songs cleared for the pic from Sony and Columbia, giving Taylor-Johnson...

When Sam Taylor-Johnson started working on her Amy Winehouse biopic, Back to Black, she asked screenwriter Matt Greenhalgh to listen to one of Winehouse’s tracks, “Tears Dry on Their Own,” before he started writing. “I kept saying in those early days, ‘I feel like this song is our path to understanding her,’ ” Taylor-Johnson says.
In the deceptively upbeat single about Winehouse’s tumultuous relationship with her on-again, off-again love, Blake Fielder-Civil, she sings, “It’s my responsibility/And you don’t owe nothing to me.”
For Taylor-Johnson, 57, that line spoke to something largely misunderstood about Winehouse, the English singer who died of alcohol poisoning in 2011: Just 27, she left behind an outsize cultural impact. Winehouse’s defining album, Back to Black, sold more than 16 million copies worldwide, and her unique mix of jazz and soul with punk-era defiance would go on to influence artists like Adele, Lady Gaga and Billie Eilish.

Singer Lily Allen, who is now settled with her ‘Stranger Things’ actor David Harbour, went through a tough time when she achieved fame as a singer. Her mother Alison Owen said she saw her daughter and Amy Winhouse go through similar struggles when they first got into the public eye.
Owen, who is a producer on the upcoming Amy Winehouse biopic ‘Back to Black’, told The Times that she thought being in the spotlight “would destroy my daughter” and lead her down the same grim path Winehouse ended up on.
Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning on July 23, 2011, at the age of 27. Her brother believed that bulimia was also to blame.
Referring to Allen’s former-actor father Keith Allen, she added: “Lily fitted the bill because, early in her success, her role model was her dad.

CBS is looking to scare up more laughs after handing an early Season 4 renewal to supernatural comedy Ghosts.
It is the latest renewal order for the Paramount-owned network, which also handed a third season to Fire Country and gave Justin Hartley series Tracker a second season earlier this month.
Ghosts, which is based on the BBC’s British comedy, has been a success for CBS since launching in 2021. Its third season is averaging over 10M viewers in live 7-day multiplatform viewing, which is marginally up from last year and streaming numbers are up on Paramount+, where the company said it ranked as its number one comedy in February.

Sam Taylor-Johnson’s upcoming Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black” may have access to the late singer’s globally recognized back catalog, but another legendary musician is lending his talents to the project.
Nick Cave, alongside his long-time collaborator Warren Ellis, is scoring the StudioCanal and Focus Features film, which sees “Industry” star Marisa Abela play Winehouse. Abela is joined by a cast including Jack O’Connell (playing Blake Fielder-Civil), Eddie Marsan (Mitch Winehouse), Juliet Cowan (Janis Winehouse) and Lesley Manville.
Variety has been given an exclusive photo taken of Cave, Ellis and Taylor-Johnson recording in the studio earlier this week.
While Winehouse’s own songs, such as “Back to Black” (which featured in the recent trailer), “Valerie” and “Rehab” will undoubtedly take center stage in the film (with most recorded and performed by Abela), Cave and Ellis are understood to have composed about 20-30 minutes of music.

‘Ghosts’ Producer Developing TV Version Of Podcast About Prolific British Con Woman
Ghosts producer Monumental Television is developing a TV version of a Global podcast about one of the most prolific fraudsters in British history. The indie has secured rights to Filthy Ritual, which is about Juliette D’Souza, who at the turn of the century wreaked havoc on a number of people’s lives until a rag-tag team of her victims came together to fight for justice. Described by her neighbors as being like ‘a knife in a velvet glove’, D’Souza claimed to have a special connection to an ancient source of power and wisdom deep in the Amazonian jungle, and she is said to have made at least £1M through extortion and manipulation. ITV Studios-backed Monumental makes BBC One smash Ghosts, which has been adapted for CBS, along with the likes of ITV’s Maryland and UKTV’s The Marlow Murder Club.

After being forced to push the Season 3 premiere date for its hit comedy Ghosts to February 15, 2024 amidst this summer’s dual strikes, CBS is readying for its return to production, star Danielle Pinnock has revealed.

Pinnock expects the show to shoot “only 10 episodes this season,” rather than the 18+ that have been put out in its first two go-rounds, because of both strike-forced delays and the fact that her co-star Sheila Carrasco is expecting her first child. Still, she teased, “those episodes are fierce and the audiences should prepare themselves.”

The streaming service has shared a promo of the series premiere of Mrs Sidhu Investigates, and let's say we're hungry for more.
Mrs. Sidhu Investigates stars Meera Syal, Gurjeet Singh (Ackley Bridge), Craig Parkinson, and Naana Agyei-Ampadu (Death in Paradise).
Mrs Sidhu Investigates follows Mrs. Sidhu (Syal), a high-end caterer with a taste for crime who solves murders and other ghastly crimes amongst the affluent residents of Berkshire.
A lifetime of being an "Indian Aunty," invisible to the elite, has sharpened her skills as an investigator: an instinct for truth, a warmth with people and a persistent sense of nosiness.
Recently widowed, Mrs. Sidhu juggles her new catering business with wrangling her wayward son, Tez (Singh), all while serving up justice to those who believe they are above the law.
