The Motion Picture Sound Editors (Mpse) made some noise today as they revealed the extensive list of nominees for the 67th Annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards. The nominees are a representation of the work of the world’s most talented sound artists and their contributions to the past year’s most outstanding feature film, television, animation, computer entertainment and student productions.
“Sound artists continue to push boundaries for artistry and technical achievement in entertainment sound,” said Mpse president Tom McCarthy. “This year’s nominees represent the best work in sound across films, television, games, documentaries and other media. On behalf of The Motion Picture Sound Editors, I would like to congratulate all the nominees for their outstanding contributions to the art of sound.”
The Mpse Golden Reel Awards will give shine to outstanding achievement in sound editing in a staggering 23 categories encompassing feature films, television, animation, computer entertainment and student work.

Hollywood’s sound pros nominated Birdman and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes for three awards apiece as the Motion Picture Sound Editors unveiled nods for its 62nd Mpse Golden Reel Awards, honoring the best feature film, television, animation and computer entertainment work of the year.
“2014 was a fantastic year for sound,” said Mpse president Frank Morrone. “The advent of new distribution channels, streaming services and gaming platforms is creating additional opportunities for sound artists to practice their craft beyond the traditional venues of film and television. This year’s nominations reflect that change, spanning an amazing diversity of mediums and genres, all executed at the highest level of creativity. We are truly inspired and impressed by the work of our colleagues.”

The most interesting part of the latest Soundworks Collection featurette taking a look at the sound design of The Hunger Games is the focus on the Foley work, primarily the use of the iPad giving foley artist Catherine Harper (Drive) the ability to watch the film while they recorded sound for the arena environment. The video features comments from Supervising Sound Editor Lon Bender (Drive), Re-recording Mixer Michael Keller (Green Lantern) and Re-recording Mixer Mike Prestwood Smith (Green Lantern) and I'd be curious to hear how outdoor foley effects were recorded before the iPad. Clearly they could have mimicked the outdoor environment indoors or set up a screen or television outside to record the effects, but just in watching the video it is clear Catherine Harper is able to move more freely with the film right there in her hands as she attempts to precisely mimic the footsteps of the actors on screen.

It’s impossible not to be impressed by the folks at the SoundWorks Collection. Time and time again, they find great projects to feature and highlight one of the most atmospherically impactful elements of modern film: sound. In a time when we’re talking Oscar for a unique film without sound (The Artist), it’s also important to continue to celebrate the incredible work that goes into engulfing us with audible stimuli. In this particular instance, they feature Supervising Sound Editor Lon Bender’s work on the throbbing world of Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive. Combined with the incredible Clint Martinez (which Allison featured as part of Aural Fixation a few weeks back). Through this behind the scenes featurette, you get a look at what it took to move back and forth between the moments driven by score and the moments driven without score, a perfectly balanced effort.
