With flashy movie adaptations of childhood favorites like The Smurfs and Alvin and the Chipmunks making incredible profits worldwide, it's little wonder that DreamWorks recently snatched up the rights to a whole cache of classic characters that could be spun into future family-friendly franchises. Now Kevin Clash, best known as the man behind the Sesame Street's Elmo, is getting in on the game, producing a film with long-beloved dolls Raggedy Ann and Andy at its center. Variety reports Clash and The Gotham Group will adapt Johnny Gruelle's storybook Raggedy Ann and Andy and the Camel With Wrinkled Knees into a musical comedy that will blend puppetry and computer graphics to bring its patchwork pair of protagonists to life. Much like the recent Muppets movie, the film will have a modern-day setting and include a slew of celebrity cameos. Raggedy Ann and Andy and the Camel With Wrinkled Knees...

Kevin Clash has entered many a childhood as the puppeteer of Sesame Street‘s Elmo, but it wasn’t until last year’s acclaimed (and streamable) Being Elmo that many got to see the man behind the fabric. The man’s now mixing the profession at which he so excelled and the world of film, as Variety reports that Clash has teamed with The Gotham Group for a live-action film based on Raggedy Ann and Andy.
The production, while mostly practical, will also require the assistance of CGI to create these beloved — though, in my opinion, slightly unsettling — dolls to life; it’s only right to expect Clash will be operating them. Plot-wise, inspiration stems from Johnny Gruelle‘s Raggedy Ann and Andy and the Camel With Wrinkled Knees, a story in which the two heroes get lost in the modern-day world whilst trying to retrieve a stolen doll, Babette.

As Toy Story 3 arrives on DVD and Blu-ray, we look at other films in which toys walk and talk under their own power, and they've been doing it for quite a while too!
The Toy Story triumvirate will reign supreme among stories of toys coming to life and it's hard to imagine any single film or series that uses the premise of living playthings ever besting the perfect trio of movies.
But having given the hat trick fair praise, the toys in Andy's room weren't the first to walk and talk under their own control, and other stories feature toys springing to life when their owners aren't around or by the power of dreams and wishes, the magic of midnight or, in one case, the might of military grade munitions chips.
So, if you still have room for more childhood toy fantasies and adventures beyond Woody, Buzz and their crew,...
