Twin Peaks, Season 2, Episode 14, “Double Play”
Written by Scott Frost
Directed by Uli Edel
Originally aired February 2, 1991 on ABC
One of the most successful things about Twin Peaks was its uniquely seamless ability to balance the dark and the light. Thanks largely to the competent handling of David Lynch, the series has become known for its horrifying and surreal moments as well as its goofy humour, and for the then-unparalleled way it could flit between them, combine them, and manipulate them. One single scene could be simultaneously terrifying and chuckle-inducing, and it became up to viewers to determine how they were supposed to feel about that. It was challenging, but remarkably and consistently effective.
It’s such a shame, then, that at some point during the second season, the series lost this ability. The balance is gone, and in its place is the skewed amateurish juggling of tone seen in this episode,...

Twin Peaks, Season 2, Episode 8, “Drive with a Dead Girl”
Written by Scott Frost
Directed by Caleb Deschanel
Originally aired November 17, 1990 on ABC
“Diane, it’s 11:05 pm. I’m in my room at the Great Northern Hotel. There’s not a star in the sky tonight. Ben Horne is in custody. The trail narrows, Diane. I’m very close. But the last two steps are always the darkest and most difficult.”
Have you ever begged a secret out of someone? They let a tiny piece slip, and suddenly finding out the whole truth is the only thing that matters. You plead that they just tell you. You pick away at them, breaking them down, again and again, until it goes on too long for either of you and you can’t take it anymore, you just need to know and they need to tell you, right now. They sigh, dramatically.

People were generally divided into two schools of thought on HBO’s solemn, mysterious drama The Leftovers. Either you appreciated it as a thoughtful examination of grief and loss, or you dismissed it as an overwrought exercise in misery porn. And though its ratings weren’t anything to write home about, HBO did renew the show for a second season, so showrunners Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta will have another chance to engage viewers. Intriguingly, they’ll be changing things up quite a bit in order to do so.
According to Deadline, The Leftovers will be leaving the town of Mapleton behind to an as-of-yet unknown new setting. Part and parcel with that, multiple characters who played a role in the first season won’t be returning. Out of the 14 stars of the first season, only the leads are set to reprise their roles. That includes Justin Theroux as Mapleton...

Twin Peaks co-creator and executive producer Mark Frost plans on publishing a book in late 2015 that will fill in fans of the show on everything that's happened to its characters since the series went off the air in 1991. The Secret Lives of Twin Peaks will also delve deeper into the show's original mystery, and resolve plot holes, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The book is timed to come out in advance of the show's return as a nine-episode, limited series on Showtime in 2016.

Hey guess what? You're a fan of soccer now. Yes, you, American person who has never cared about sports before. Now here's what you do next: you watch every World Cup game. You talk incessantly about every World Cup game. You constantly check the scores on your phone even when you're out dining with other people. You tweet about Cristiano Ronaldo's eyebrows for no good reason. You become the most annoying faux-sports fan in the history of the world. You repeat every four years until death. On that note, here's a sampling of disappointed tweets from celebrities, internet celebrities and just regular ol' people following Portugal superstar Silvestre Varela's truly spectacular last-second goal today, followed by a collection of more hopeful (but now far less relevant) tweets that came after U.S. player Clint Dempsey used his tight delicious abdomen to score against the Sub-Spaniard monsters earlier in the game.
