Director Daniel Chan (Young and Dangerous: Reloaded) Hong Kong crime thriller Triad, debuting on DVD and Digital Aug. 26 from Well Go USA Entertainment. William Chan, Michele Wai and Derek Tsang star in the story of three childhood friends who join the Hong Kong Triads, and to be honest we wouldn’t say Mr Chans best work, but its still pretty darn good. Synopsis: Three childhood friends join the Hong Kong Triads, only to discover that fame and fortune will ultimately break them apart as only one can become the leader of the gang. Triad trailer...

Hong Kong’s Mega-Vision Project Workshop is planning a sequel to its Chinese New Year hit From Vegas To Macau, reuniting stars Chow Yun Fat and Nicholas Tse and director Wong Jing.
Andrew Lau will also return to produce From Vegas To Macau II. The first film, about a small-time conman (Tse) who turns to a legendary gambler (Chow) to avenge his brother, grossed $85m in mainland China.
Mega-Vision is also in pre-production on Wong Jing’s King Of Drug Dealers, starring Nick Cheung, about gangsters and corrupt policemen in 1960s Hong Kong.
The company also two new titles in post-production: Daniel Chan’s La Tele De Vampire, starring Ronald Cheng and Yuen Biao, and sex comedy Flirting In The Air, starring Chapman To and Dada Chan.

The Triads are back in “Young and Dangerous: Reloaded”, which sees producers Wong Jing and Manfred Wong returning to the hugely popular series following the fortunes of good looking gang upstarts. Though their quality might have been variable, the original films really were for many one of the standouts of 1990s Hong Kong genre cinema, the first instalment back in 1996 having been directed by Andrew Lau (“Infernal Affairs”) and having helped skyrocket the career of Ekin Cheng, along with co-stars Jordan Chan, Francis Ng, Gigi Lai and Simon Yam. And so, it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that more than 15 years and some 10 (at last count) sequels and spin-offs later, a reboot now arrives, directed by Daniel Chan, who recently also dabbled with gang action in “Triad”, attempting to revisit the formula for a new generation. Taking on the all-important lead role is Him Law (“Hong Kong...

There’s no denying that recent years have been lean times for fans of triad and Hong Kong gang action, though there’s finally a splash of neon light at the end of the tunnel with the aptly named “Triad”. Appropriately for such a uniquely local and Hong Kong genre, the film was produced by the same team responsible for the “Lan Kwai Fong” duology and “Girl$”, and was written and directed by Daniel Chan, who also helmed Wong Jing’s soon to be seen “Young and Dangerous” reboot. As expected, the film showcases a cast of young up and coming talent as the rising gangsters, headlined by Sun Boyz singer William Chan (“Overheard”) and including Derek Tsang (“The Thieves”), Deep Ng (“The Viral Factor”) and Michelle Wai (“Lives in Flames”), plus veterans Patrick Tam (“The Detective 2”) and Irene Wan (“Exodus”). The plot charts the rise of young William (William Chan...

Fresh off making what was essentially a Young and Dangerous style gangster flick with Triad, director Daniel Chan Yee Heng does it for real with the Wong Jing-produced Young And Dangerous: Reloaded. Penned by original scriptwriter Manfred Wong, this reboot of the hugely popular series of 1990s movies - based on the comics of Cowman and Dickey Yau - sees Chan Ho Nam, Chicken and the rest of the boys take to the streets of Hong Kong to avenge the death of their boss, Brother Bee. Him Law and Leung Lit Wai embody the iconic roles made famous by Ekin Cheng and Jordan Chan, along with a host of young faces including Philip Ng, Ho Wan Sze, Paul Wong, Jazz Lam and Man Chi Leung. The...

Daniel Chan's gangland coming-of-age saga ticks many of the right boxes, but is never able to rise above the constraints of its genre. This, combined with a lack of star power and heavyweight acting talent, mean that Triad is at best a competent entry in the vast canon of Hong Kong gangster flicks, but one that fails to leave a lasting impression.Three school friends, William (william Chan), Edward (Edward Tsui) and Derek (Derek Tsang), become increasingly embroiled in the Mongkok triad scene after they get into a bar fight with an established young lieutenant from a rival society. Despite recently graduating from university, William is attracted away from a promising business career by the money, power and women associated with a life of crime. With Hong...

Emperor Motion Pictures has just released a trailer for its forthcoming gangster drama, Triad, and it looks like a real blast from the past. Clearly set in the present day, Triad nevertheless exudes an old school 90s vibe with its trio of young wannabes engaging in all number of bloody turf wars on the streets of Mong Kok when not chasing girls, getting gang tattoos or declaring their undying loyalty to each other. The film's Category III rating clearly isn't simply for graphic triad activity either, as was the case for Johnnie To's Election, as Daniel Chan's film looks incredibly violent and brimming with chopper action. William Chan, Patrick Tam and Eric Tsang's son Derek head up the cast, which also includes Michelle Wai and Irene...

I know next to nothing about director Daniel Chan’s upcoming gangster flick “Triad”. That having been said, I’ve heard this sort of crime-oriented story a few dozens times before. A young guy works his way up through the ranks of a crime syndicate, decides it’s time to quit, cleans up his life, and Bam! — everything comes crashing down. This is a gross generalization on my part, especially considering all I have to work with at this point is the nifty poster you see to the left and the generic synopsis embedded below. And, like magic, here it is: College-educated Harvard decides to become a gangster. He is promoted through the ranks, then heads his own team. As Hong Kong prepares for its 1997 handover, Harvard works with the police to ensure survival of his gang. His former boss Bj helps him out and they swear friendship. Harvard is...

We’ve beaten you profusely about the head and neck with images from Raymond Yip’s upcoming Chinese horror flick “Blood Stained Shoes”, so it’s only appropriate that we deliver an English-subtitled trailer for you to consume, as well. And while I’m still not entirely sure what the film is all about — if anyone has a plot synopsis, feel free to point us in the right direction — the flick certainly looks bloody enough for me to take notice. Not that gore and carnage are essential to my enjoyment, mind you. But when you have little else to go on, it does help grease the wheels of interest just a bit. And, yes, I realize this makes me sound insane. “Blood Stained Shoes”, which stars Ruby Lin, Monica Mok, Anna Kay, Kara Hui, Michael Tong, Xing Minshan, Daniel Chan, Jing Gangshan, and Daichi Harashima, opens on March 8th, 2012. Urban dwellers in China report greener behavior.
Chinese urbanization has occurred at an unprecedented rate. "If current trends hold," says a 2009 McKinsey report, "nearly one billion people will live in [Chinese] urban centers by 2025," bringing challenges related to land, energy, water, and the environment. But a new study from Michigan State University suggests there's a silver lining to the clouds of urban smog in China: City life appears to make Chinese residents better environmentalists. The study is published in the latest edition of the British journal Environmental Conservation.
The study examines whether people in the last year engaged in certain pro-environmental behavior: sorting recyclables, recycling plastic bags, discussing the environment with friends and family, volunteering at environmental organizations, or taking part in environmental litigation. It turned out that dwellers of China's largest cities--Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin, for instance--were more likely on average to engage in behaviors like these than people in smaller cities or rural dwellers.

Long-time producer and director Tsui Hark did well last year with his film [1] Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame, then he jumped right into production on a new film. That's the 3D wuxia epic Flying Swords of Dragon Inn, with Jet Li starring. We've got the first pics from the film, as well as some good statements from the director and star, after the break. If the idea of martial arts, swordplay and wirework sounds appealing, this might be the movie. Tsui Hark says of doing this sort of film in 3D, There are three major criteria pertaining to wushu choreography, the exquisiteness and difficulty level of the moves, the set up as a whole, and how to use film to show the characteristics and principles behind wushu. 3D brings about a whole new visual experience, and would ultimately result in actions designed originally for 2D filming losing impact,...

Tsui Hark is happy in this picture because he's fooled us all!
On the heels of completing Detective Dee And The Mystery Of The Phantom Flame - his best film in ages - Tsui set off to make the big budget 3D wuxia extravaganza Flying Swords Of Dragon Gate, commenting on how he intended to shoot a few test scenes in 3D first to get a feel for the technology. Well, apparently a few test scenes translated into an entire feature shot entirely out of the public eye.
Now in post production the film is titled Catching Monkey, a computer hacking thriller starring Charlie Young, Yu Nan and Daniel Chan. International sales company Distribution Workshop will be launching the film at the upcoming American Film Market, which I assume will include showing some footage.

Now in it's third year, the It Project is a production market organized by PiFan - the largest genre film event in Asia - and their industry arm Naff. For those unfamiliar, a project market is a forum for film projects to be presented to interested investors and potential partners, a sort of highly focused meet and greet where the participants are strictly limited and chosen by a board of industry professionals. It's a setup that allows investors to be confident that they'll be seeing the best of the current crop of developing projects and just being selected for a market such of this is a fairly big deal. So I've been rather happy to spend the past five days attending the It Project as a producer on Gareth Huw Evans' upcoming feature Berandal - his second feature built around silat martial artist Iko Uwais. And I'm even happier...

The fifteen projects selected to take part in the 2010 It Project co-production market at PiFan 2010 have been announced and while - as is the case with any co-production market - a good number of these will never actually get made, the list is an intriguing chance to see what's in the works and what the next couple of years may look like.
Big names in the list this year? Pang Ho-Cheung, in with a project titled Demonstrate Loyalty and Gareth Huw Evans with a new Indonesian martial arts project, Berandal.
The only information given at this stage are the titles but knowing that these are all genre projects, my money is on the Pang being somehow triad related. Berandal, however, I'm directly involved in so I can be a bit more specific.
The film once again will pair writer-director Evans with stars Iko Uwais (Yayan in Merantau) and Yayan Ruhian...
