MAKE-UP
Make-up: A Love Story is another Christiana Production, another short from the cult collection Motel Americana, another family affair for Joe and his kitchen sink crew of noir-chomping, bare-knuckle-brawling auteurs. If the poetry doesnÂ’t get you, the carefully composed shots will. You should see the one where the clown pulls out a bouquet of flowers and nearly loses a tooth. Or the one when the clown rehearses a joke in front of a statue but reminds you more of King Lear (after his eyes go) than he does of Lennie Bruce (before prison). They go for the note that doubles you over like a hilarious karate chop. YouÂ’ll be laughing all the way to the hospital as your blood pools on the floor. Have you ever seen the inside of a clownÂ’s suitcase? Have you ever walked a mile in a clownÂ’s shoes? Ever been chewed out by a manager named Shenanigans? We feel like we have, and this is the joy of film, or this film, pure and simple.
