Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
The perfect movie
Every shot, every line, every beat of this movie is just perfection.
I've watched this hundreds of times and I honestly think it gets better every time.
It has everything you'd want from a film, and it's layers are endless.
The CGI, startling back in 92, still work today and are completely believable. It almost makes me sad that they can't achieve this level of storytelling these days, where you can have a balance of action and real characters that you care about, and have scenes with emotional depth.
I'm obviously now at the age to say "they don't make em like that anymore".
The Isle (2018)
Intelligent thriller chiller
There's a real mix of user reviews here. I read the critics one's who all loved it, praising all the things that the few users who didn't like it mentioned. Have a feeling there's some trolling going on!
Nevertheless we thought it was an excellent movie, especially considering the low budget. There's a real sensitivity in the filmmaking and performances and it's definitely something I've never seen before.
It's really a revenge thriller disguised as a ghost story, with some excellent references to various myths, from Scottish to Greek. A lot of it is very subtle, which I genuinely relished, for once making me really pay attention, and work out myself.
My wife and daughter especially liked it and they were very happy that it wasn't a horror, which I think some of the 'troll' reviews had led us to believe. It's also part romance, part history drama with just enough hints at a supernatural edge to keep you alert.
In an interview with the filmmakers they mentioned wanting to work with the theme of how women's mental health was treated in the era, and I thought that was a clever slant to it all. I wish they'd been a bit more candid about that, would have been nice to see a bit more, but then again this is not a movie that just gives you everything, and I appreciate it for that.
Would watch again.
Die Hard (1988)
The perfect Christmas movie!
And it IS a Christmas movie. Everything about it is Christmas. I sometimes feel like Bruce Willis does at the end of the movie by the time Christmas is over!
It's a brilliantly executed, well paced, jam packed movie that has taken the time to grow the characters and let us in to their lives. And throughout the movie, not just at the beginning before you get to the explosions.
This is a movie that will be watched for another 30 years as THE go to Christmas movie. That and Scrooged....
Gremlins (1984)
So good, and yet not!
I love this movie...i mean love it. But I watched it again at Christmas and i'm thinking it's partly because of nostalgia... it's not that great a movie...
Although I can see it was great for it's time, I'm just not sure it really stands up anymore. Sad to say, and you can't really fault the movie for that, but I felt a little sad at the end.
But then they don't make movies like this anymore, i'm not sure the kids would get it.
But if you haven't seen it, I hope you do and love it as much as I do...
Habit (2017)
Hmmmm....
Tricky this one as I'm not sure I was watching the right movie. And i'm Definitely not the right audience.
Having said that I think it was well done on the whole, but the whole blood blood blood thing I feel is a little 'over', if you know what I mean.
Sure some kids in black shirts will love it, but I need my thrillers a little more well thought out.
Happy Death Day (2017)
Pleasantly surprised
I thought this was going to be terrible, and sometimes it was a bit, but on the whole I loved !
Hard to write about without spoiling things, but if you're dubious about it, don't be. It's silly fun, but very well done.
And now I can't wait for the sequel..........................!!!!
