Smile (2022)
Definitely one of the better horrors of the last few years
A horror movie often depends on the acting to believe in how scared you should be and the acting here is superb by the whole cast. This movie had minimal visual effects and relied on the actors to create fear and genuinely creepy imagery. This is a slow burn with enough jump scares to keep you going but the psychological thriller aspect is where this movie really shines. I also liked that the characters mostly did what real people would do, so the story maintained its believability and I wasn't shaking my fist at the characters for making dumb choices. Definitely one of the better horror movies I've seen in a few years and a treat for spooky season!
Persuasion (2022)
Stop one starring if you want more period movie!
Y'all, when you rate these adaptations one star, you know what we won't get - more period movies! Let's not bite the hand that feeds us! Let's also stop obsessing about whether an adaptation is pure and perfect and just watch these movies on their own.
The Hating Game (2021)
Sadly, it was very uneven
There's a lot to love about this but the editing/tone/acting/something made it super uneven. Characters were hot and cold with each other so randomly and quickly that it was impossible to be on the emotional journey with them. In fact I was like "woah psycho alert" when the lead dude was suddenly dropping "love" bombs. The friend-zoned Danny was the real catch!
Bridgerton (2020)
Officially in love with Jonathon Bailey
Let's be honest season 1 was just okay but the "intimate" scenes were thrilling enough to make this show huge. Season 2 delivered on an actual love story tethered to actual character development. Jonathan Bailey is superb. He can deliver so much with the subtlest shift in an eyebrow or intensity in his eyes. Lots of haters out there because of the relative lack of sex and departures from the book. But it was hot and passionate nonetheless and ultimately a touching real deal love story.
