Underwater (2020)
James Cameron did not direct
Normally a movie starts with a intro. Something heartwarming. Something that makes us bond with the characters and root for them for the rest of the movie. This doesn't happen.
Instead we are thrown into action, flawed characters as well as well as flawed physics.
As a former free diver and scuba diver, they could have opted for some really scary deaths - given the physical pressure and place of the movie - but they didn't.
Implosions don't explode. They implode.
What else? I like Kristen Stewart. Vincent Cassel is underused. The suits are produced well (as much today, focus lies on production,..). And yeah, there's a Guinea pig in the comedic "relief" guy's suit.
That's about it.
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
I lost brain cells watching this
The original Mel Gibson Mad Max movies had their fingers on the pulse. It was amidst the Cold War and the Iraq war, fuel shortage and worry of a third World War. People were stressed, regressed to simpler, more violent entertainment - along with other dystopian movies like the Escape from New York and the Running Man.
The original Mad Movies had almost been played out as it was and reviving the same story as is, without the zeitgeist - the spirit of the time - is for me incomprehensible. What this movie actually does, I do not know.
However strangely I feel about it though, it seems to capture an audience - if IMDb shows it correctly. For me, it just feels ridiculous. The lack of dialogue, lack of realism, a guitar playing guy in front of a truck with flames coming out at one end, upped only by violence, excessive facial ornament and built production (cars and trucks) made me actually feel that I may have lost IQ.
I hope I regain it.
Brightburn (2019)
What if Smallville Superman was bad,..?
Not the best movie but an interesting take on an anti-superhero movie. Easy sum up? - What if the Smallville series was made into a horror movie and Clark Kent was bad?
That's it.
Unfortunately it doesn't do much more than that, although it would be a good pilot episode in a series, sharing similarities with The Boys. It lends setting and feelings with Smallville, too much. But I'm this movie, it evolves little - just like a horror movie,.. You all know how it is going to end.
Creative though, to an extent. Maybe they can evolve it if they ever do a sequel? It has potential, unlike much today.
Scream (2022)
When "Franchise" is quoted in the movie itself
Meta goes meta in a poor way.
Finding myself writing this review as it's more interesting than watching the movie. I thought - Maybe, maybe this time a sequel goes right nowadays?
No. Not today.
Love Ortegas performance. And the oldies, to be Frank. Great to see Ullrich and Millard again - haven't seen Ullrich in a long time. Sadly. But everything has been done before, especially when you go meta,.. Nothing new to see here folks. I'm not even halfway through, so maybe I'll deduct one or more stars more.
Why can't people just make good movies today? Is it the executives? What's happening? Something new - something creative?
I give up.
Bye,..
Foundation (2021)
It grew slowly on me - I came around
Short summation: This show went from a strained 5, to an intrigued 8, in two seasons.
Do give it a try!
I have to be frank, the first season was hard for me to get into. The concept itself was foreign, but I wanted to give it a go as it was based on a creation of Isaac Asimov. Being a sci-fi series too, and one extremely high quality production at that, I wanted to like it. I don't know wether it was me, my lack of knowledge and understanding of this more mentally inclined creation, the emperors clothes (literally), or the introduction of the first season, but it was hard for me to get into - although it did grow.
By the second season I must say - and especially by the end of it - I was completely hooked and I had gone from a rating it a 5, to an 8 (!). The cast is great. The characters are likeable (even those I didn't care for to begin with), and I think the pacing is much better and balanced - episode to episode.
I think this world is so foreign to begin with (at least for someone who hasn't read the books), that it has to grow on you. Getting into it, is a leap - especially since the material is a bit heavy on the intellectual construct side. You'll know what I mean.
In short? Do give it a try, but give it time to grow. Thumbs up and can't wait for season three! 👍
UFO Sweden (2022)
Good artists lend, great steal, but,..
Do you want to see Interstellar, Stranger Things, with characters thought to be funny - but lesser developed than in the Police Academy? Then this is your movie.
- A review by a swede, watched in the original language
They say imitation is the highest form of flattery - but this is at times just theft.
Now, I don't want to cut it down by the ankles straight up. There are good things worthy to be mentioned first. I do want to applaud the production company's, Crazy Pictures, wants to do something different here - in this country that otherwise doesn't want to stick out it's neck. UFO:s in Sweden is a nice idea for a movie, there are good actors in it (though highly flawed due to the lacking script), and the imagery is actually really nice at times. Soo nice that it actually triumphs the movie entirely - which is a bad thing. Music is at times nice too, although both of these things seems to lean heavily on, or to be near upright stolen (!) from Stranger Things, Interstellar and Hans Zimmer himself.
There are American ambitions with this movie. Intensity, quirky characters, action, but it all falls flat (besides it's copyright/originality issues) with the fact that borrowed parts of imagery, music, nice footage, doesn't make for a movie. There is a need for direction! (-Which by the way, why was there no director attached to this movie's end credits?) There's also a need for a script, plot, character development and developed characters to begin with. The basics. - You know, the flower in a cake.
Instead, Crazy Pictures seem to have aimed for the icing of the cake: the sugar, the decoration and the food colouring - making this look good, but have no real substance. Not until it's last 20-30 minutes or so does it get interesting and with some actual thought as to how it's all tied together (which is rather interesting and nicely done, I must say!). However, this one original idea that actually holds up needed to woven in much earlier. Instead of watching them write down forms - which is ludicrously boring even for a swede (!) - they could have opted to explore this precise core of the movie much earlier, instead of waiting with it until it's end.
With this said, it do lends up for a sequel. It has the potential to be developed further. But then it actually has to be Developed further. I'm not sure if this was their plans, but I hope they do take all the lessons they can from basic movie making, and implement it into their further works.
Because then, it could actually be rather good.
Happiest Season (2020)
Nice intent but,..
I feel this could have been a good movie. It has great actors, a good message, nice intent, but unfortunately doesn't come together. It edges on one of those 80's and 90's movies about coming true to oneself - regardless what it is that you are struggling with. Emotions are hindered, fear says stop, and in there lays personal growth. That's wonderful.
However, the script is lacking - it cuts short in an overtly plump way, people becomes characters and it lacks in tempo. So many times it feels like they're starting over because the scenes are all too quiet from one to another. As so often today, this movie lacks in directing and script. Seriously - What's wrong, Hollywood?!!?
It could have been a good movie. A really good movie. We need more of this. Inspiration about staying true to yourself - or coming in terms with who you are in the first place. I feel we have lots to learn about that in this day and age: Being honest with ourselves, regardless of the outcome and the potential kickback. The machinery can stand some gravel, if it's built well.
A for trying. B for actors. C for script. D for directing. Overall, on the plus side because of its intent and what it somewhere aimed for. We need more of that. Real life drama movies!
Now, it just needs to stay true to itself as well,.. 👍
Cosmic Sin (2021)
Impossible to watch - What did the director think of?
The director has cast Bruce Willis in 5 of his consecutive movies. 5 ! It is clear that Willys have issues and I can't see how the director possibly could be okay with this, if not to exploit him. I feel for Bruce and his neurological illness. This is not a worthy way to be treated.
Kong: Skull Island (2017)
Fun, good looking, but baaaad plot!!!
Lots of great CGI, great actors (although with little to work with), enjoyable - but a sh**load of plot holes and stupidity throughout the movie. I won't go in to them all for your sake. However, here's one scene that sets the tone quite well for what I'm saying, for what comes and goes quite frequently in the second half of the movie:
Brie Larson's character is having problems taking a "long exposure image" of the northern lights (although they're close to the equator), due to a "malfunctioning" camera flash. Instead she gets aided with a cigarette lighter so that she can adjust the exposure (?). That makes NO sense!! To point out the absurdity a bit more: It was bright outside (!), no long exposure was needed (0.5 seconds at most), bright enough to see the camera equipment and all the scenery. Also - you can't lighten the northern light with a flash, nor see the exposure settings on a camera thanks to it! It literally burns for a split second!!
The scene was less than 30 seconds and managed to get all that wrong in that short of time. Yeah, you get the image,.. 👍
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
You knew that it wasn't going to be good,..
It's a movie that didn't have to be made, didn't really say or explain anything, where everything had changed and every moment was spoon fed to the characters - filling it with the amount of information of a trilogy, thusly taking out the time for a build up to be made. Missing those beats, at times the music did too - for which without its crescendo, you wouldn't have known it was a scene for a build up moment.
I love all the actors, especially the original ones. They are amazing and especially for what they did the first time around in the trilogy. The script fell short with this one. Really flat.
And why wouldn't it? It breaks the fourth wall giving the Warner Brothers a big F-U numerous of times - like several times (!), along with criticism of reboots, revisits, remakes and what not. One must wonder if Lana Wachowski really wanted to do this movie to begin with? Lilly didn't.
I would have wished for Lana to instead voice her critique, if it was intended as such.
I wanted this to be good. I knew that it wasn't going to be, as with all reboots and remakes nowadays. It's a strange time we live in I think, but I think I'll try and forget this one and go watch the original ones, which matters. I loved those.
The cast? Thanks for trying. You made it worth watching along with some nice CGI and production value. There are nice moments. It's not terrible, it's just not very good. Unfortunately.
I'll stop now. I hate focusing on negative things. Better luck next time,..
